To B...tl-a4 or not to B...tl-a4?

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

That is the question.

Of this post.

Specifically, I'm talking Rebel Control lists, like Stress Wing.

That runs 3x B-Wings with Tactician, in addition to a Y-Wing with an Ion Cannon Turret and R3-A2.

In this case, what is more valuable: having the shots be out-of-arc, or the addition of the Y-Wing's primary attack, and the possibility of double-stressing with R3-A2?

Probably a matter of preference but I say double down on the stress.

In that list in particular, I'd use the title.

In general, it depends on the ship's maneuverability and its intended use in your squad. Essentially, there's now a turret build for the Y-wing and a jousting build, and the title toggles between them.

While double stress is a good way to go, the problem I'm finding with the rebel build is no modifier for one of your second shots.

You can target lock or focus. Now do you use that possibly on your primary or secondary shot?

Tag a toss up between possibly two hits, or maybe 1 hit and an ion

I've played the panic attack list listed above to great success before the title came out. I have no plans to include the title, the out of arc ion shots are HUGE.

For a control list, I'd think alleviating the in-arc requirement for the ion shot would be preferable. Especially with 3 Tacticians; double stress shouldn't be that hard to achieve in the first place.

Without the unhinged astromech I don't think locking the turret forward is that useful the y-wing will do well on the first pass then be out of the fight the next few turns.

I find that once you hit with that Ion 2nd shot, you no longer "Need" the turret, as you know exactly where they are going next turn. So it becomes simple to ensure you get your shot on them.

I don't think I'll EVER fly a Y-Wing without BTL again.

title-less is far more reliable given what the list is trying to acomplish (control) and places less emphasis onthe Y-wing's pretty uninspiring dial

3 B-wings plus the action superiority gained through stress more than cover the damage and double-stress potential

I have been flying this with fairly decent success against Fat Han builds in Vassal

Syndicate Thug + BTL-A4

  • Ion Cannon Turret
  • Unhinged Astromech

Mandalorian Merc

  • Ion Cannon
  • Gunner
  • Lone Wolf

Torkhil Mux + Moldy Crow

  • Ion Cannon Turret
  • Recon Specialist

I know it's not perfect and probably not even tournament competitive but it's fun to drive enemy ships off the board :)

I think it's a question of numbers. If you've got enough guns on the field, you need turrets less. Going with a good 4-5 ships, I think it's worth it to gamble on the turrets, especially if everything in your list is tossing out ions, stress, or both; you've got enough board control going on, there, that I don't the you're likely to need the out-of-arc shooting so much.

Personally, I`ve abandoned the Title Card on my Y-based control lists. We tried it out as soon as it was leaked and my style of play (bad) suits the flexibility of the Ion turret more. I also like to fly Y's through the Rocks while flinging bombs about...go figure.

That being said, in a jousting or sweeper build, the Title does really shine. I have had some real fun using it in those roles. Kind of makes the BTL-A4 the "special circumstance" build for me.

R3-A2 can't go out of arc anyway. Stress can be dealt with, double stress is a nightmare.

I've found that in that Panic attack list both that ion token and modifying your attack are vital for dealing with those pesky arc dodgers raining down on your low ps parade.

In other lists it makes for an good and cheap Phantom buster. You do need to fly accordingly though...

I've been playing with

B w/ tac, flechette cannon

B w/ tac

Y w/ R3-A2, ion, title

Y w/ Ion

It ions better, stresses better, jousts better and maneuvers better than panic attack. You also don't have to choose between the turret out the title, take both.

I think panic attack is still a solid list, it's just a little outdated at this point.

Both!
