Super Star Destroyer discussion thread

By Eagle128, in Star Wars: Armada

As much as that Mel miniatures model is very cool, I wonder if it would be better if the scale was a bit more in keeping with the ISD, ie, the whole ship is 26cm long or whatever, but this would place the 'real' size of the model as 3 times the size of an ISD...

From the diagram:

pic2993261.jpg

it's nearly 650 mm or 65 cm long, and yes, 3 times the length of an ISD. It's almost as large as you can get and still have a "comfortably playable" model - get much larger and it'll be a pain to give it a viable combat base.

If the Corvette is "really" about 1/11 the length of the ISD and yet can get away with the model being 1/3 the length- maybe the Executor can manage a similar size ratio.

1/4

1/4

The Corvette compared to the ISD, or the ISD compared to the Super? I was rounding off.

I got my SSD from Shapeways today and it looks fantastic.

As I said before it's not tne Frosted Ultra Detail version since I couldn't afford it but I'm very happy with the version I got.

Now I just have to get 2 large stands for it.

The next step is to get it painted and ready to go.

Michael

Pictures please!

Would love to paint that thing:)

When I'm able to take pictures I'll be posting some.

Here are m ore pictures of the Super Star Destroyer INEXORABLE, my current "little" project for Star Wars: Armada.

Had to trim a bit off the bow of the Mel Miniature to make it look more in scale with the FFG Miniatures in the game, also utilized the Bridge off one of my FFG Imperials to make a bridge in Scale with the FFG Ships. Sorry Mel, I hated to do it but since I am modelling her as the 4.8 Km INEXORABLE Class the bow and Bridge of the ship needed to be similar in width/scale to the FFG Imperial Miniature to provide the correct visual scale clues.

Still a few more things to do, such as finalizing the Ship Cards and Base Template; Maybe add the large Turbolasers from the Imperial Star Destroyer Miniature that was scrapped to provide the Bridge...

That will provide another visual clue to tie this in with the FFG Imperial Star Destroyer.

Here are the Pictures. More on my Blog: http://www.nangiliath.blogspot.com

is that just set on two large bases??

Edited by ouzel

The large bridge looks pretty good. And its cool to know that people have that option. I didnt want to deform my version so people could use the for decorative purposes after the game has lost its flare.

The detail looks pretty good with the paintjob. I cant wait to see your finished product.

Any chance of some more shots with other ships for a sense of scale?

Also, are you done with the painting?

is that just set on tow large bases??

Yes, it uses two large ship bases with the Ship Base Card spanning both like the Epic Ships in Star Wars: X-wing. Mel designed the miniature for this Base Arrangement, and it already has the base connectors built into the lower hull.

I will be getting some pictures of her with other ships to show the scale this weekend. Will post them when I get them.

The painting is mostly done. I may seal her with a Gloss Coat and then carefully ink the panel lines on the hull with a medium blue. Or buy a fine-line paint pen and do it that way. Then re-hit her with the Semi-Gloss Lacquer. The ink that was used on the Central Hull was mostly absorbed by the resin. Probably should have primed, gloss coated, then lightly re-primed to solve this problem. I had to do that on Mel's X-Wing Nebulon-B. But I forgot about it this time. Was in a hurry to get her done, so she can sit on my TO's Command/Control Table when I run the Regional Championship this weekend (28 May 2016 at Imperial Outpost Games in Glendale, AZ).

I will post more pictures to show her next to other ships. This turned out really well. Mel has done an awesome job on her. My only suggestion would be that she needs a "Keel" running down her centerline and a couple of transverse bulkheads connected to the keel to keep her straight along the main deck line. Real ship's keels help to prevent hogging and sagging, and it appears the SSD could use one as well. :)

The miniature had a very slight curve (similar to a katana) that may be an artifact of the printing/curing process. She also has a very slight seam that appears roughly amidships and seems to be either; a misalignment where the Bow and Aft sections of the 3D model are joined; or is an artifact of the printing where the printers connect to make the 25" Model... (Not sure on the last as I am not an expert on 3D printing, so it's just a guess...)

Can't wait to see the scale pictures, but so far it looks pretty great. I had been considering making the plunge and buying the SSD, but feared it would look as good as it did in the pictures. This might be enough to part me from my money haha.

For myself it was really easy to get it because a very good friend of mine gave me the funds to aquire this beauty and after I got it I liked it even more and it was worth it.

So BrobaFett if you can devoid yourself of the cash I'd say buy it.

I have a friend who's going to be painting it for me and I intend to bring it along to Kublacon in Burlingame CA this coming weekend as I'll be running my Star Wars Battle of Grassy Plain there and I want to show it off and also let people know that in September I hope to be running an Armada game where the SSD is the focal point of the game.

You will be so close but so far! I looked into Kublacon and was planning on going till I missed my local regional (Montclair, since I live in Orange County, CA) and decided I would be in Scotsdale this weekend.

Then my best friends wife went and planned a surprise birthday party for him, a full month after his actual birthday, for this upcoming weekend and now I will miss both.

If you take the SSD on tour down south any time soon, make sure to shoot me a PM, would love to check it out and maybe even test it on the table if you were interested in letting it blow up some of my Rebel Scum.

BrobaFett If it happens I'll let you know.

What I would like to see for the SSD... especially now that there's a proof of concept workable model!

Admiral Piett - Fleet Commander - If attacking from only your front hull zone, concentrate fire commands add 2 additional dice (for a total of three.)

Intensify forward firepower!

Captain Piett - Officer Upgrade - May only be equipped to your flagship - Discard your admiral at the start of a turn to allow all friendly ships to immediately make a speed 1 maneuver with up to 2 yaw.

Piett's first act as a new admiral was to fix his predecessor's positioning mistake.

SSD as an epic ship in Armada?

And Rebels will get ... what?

Mon calamari Star Defender.

The problem with the rebel star defender would be cost unless it was made hollow, I think would even higher in price than the Executor. So maybe a different ship could used hopefully one not as ugly as the Star Defender.

If you like the design more power to you but I hate it myself. On a side note I am also waiting on Mel's Blows my mind Executor and I will play with her until the wheels fall off.

may the empire be with you.

Executor SSD you won't be disappointed with Mel's SSD when I got mine it was better in person than the pictures I've seen and I'm pleased to have gotten I(with the help of my very good friend).

Since I'm going to Kublacon this weekend to run my Grassy Plains game I'll be bringing my SSD to show off to people and let them know that I'll be doing a game at Pacificon in Sept with the SSD as the main attraction in this game.

What a rad idea! I love creative ways to make the game feel almost cinematic like this.

looking at photos of ships the star defender is 1 1/2 or more times bigger then the SSD and Home one is about the same size as the SSD and 5 times bigger them a MC 80, I tried to post them but FFG format blocks them. So maybe a real sized home one. :)

Edited by ouzel

This will be my first order from Mel but far from my last one . His huge home one is the next ship to order, who am I kidding? all his cap ships will someday be in my hands. I will crush the rebellion in one , oh sorry got carried away there.

I love x wing but I have to do some research on both games to become at one or both, for now good by and thanks for all the fishes.

As promised, here are some pictures of the INEXORABLE Class SSD in company with other ships of the Imperial Fleet:

Here are the first DRAFT of the Ship Cards I have put together for the INEXORABLE:

Inexorable-II-Class-Super-Star-Destroyer

The other option is to do FORE and AFT Cards with a UNCRIPPLED and CRIPPLED Side like the EPIC Ships in X-Wing. I will be putting these together and my group will playtest both variations to see which we like best.

so many tokens lol

This is exactly why I am 100% certain that we will see a SSD or another type of imperial super-capital ship soon. It is just too **** cool to not have one of these on the drawing board. Until we can have Darth Vader sitting in an SSD chugging across the board at speed 2, the game feels somewhat incomplete.

Now the rebels have 2 types of large ship and also 1 extra ship in total, I think it can be done without breaking the game, but there would need to be rules for 600 point games.
