Super Star Destroyer discussion thread

By Eagle128, in Star Wars: Armada

Eventually this thread will be as long as the SSD itself. I wonder what will happen to it if FFG ever does make a Super star Destroyer.

because that's the only way this thread will die. That, or when someone comes up with one.

I haven't seen the World Devastators since I last played through X-Wing 3D back in college. Ah, memories.

No, then everyone will start complaining about how it's over/underpowered & that the engine bells exist in a superposition of visible & invisible :D

If Beatty's exasperation is any indication this thread will probably turn into the rant thread of why the Executor isn't awesome enough. No SSD may please him, I think.

I'm not expecting a miracle ship, or a table-hog, or imminent doom of the rebels. I'm expecting something visibly impressive, the size of an X-Wing Epic, and kitted out to be a proper fleet flagship. It will not meet everyone's expectations, but it will fill that niche. Then there will be nothing bigger...

...and the fans will create more star dreadnoughts based on the path the SSD blazed. Just like they do for scum ships in X-Wing Epic.

Well I did say I was all for the other smaller class SSD's to be introduced but that the Executor was too big fluff and size wise to be realistic enough to fit in this game. I have been told you people don't care about that. I have mentioned after seeing the size of the ISD that a ship twice that size would cause issues on a 3x6, but no one cared.

And the same arguments are still swirling around.

My last response was an overreaction from being tired and exhausted from a long day and should have been more diplomatic but it is still frustrated. So I kind of giving up. It's an old topic that should have died months ago.

Make it weak, like they did with the VSD and ISD? So that it's playable? Sounds like a plan.

:P

you could make one for vassal :P

Good idea, make one with a base 3 times the length and width of the ISD.

Yes you are :P

Heck, just make an Executor playmat, that'll be enough.

Dear God! Somebody stab my eyes with an Icepick! Dork Empire must be forgotten!

Sorry, not a fan of those comics. Can you tell?

Er, said "X-Wing 3D" and I meant "Rogue Squadron", forgive me Wedge for I have sinned.

Remember these bad boys? (and the ever-popular "V-Wing")

Yeah, but the World Devastators were originally from Dork Empire. It was a blight on Star Wars. One of the things I was GLAD Disney abolished from the cannon.

It makes me sad that some folks actually enjoyed that rubbish. Ah well, to each their own! :D

The only thing I know about Dark Empire pertaining to this thread is that I wouldn't want the Eclipse . Though if we did get it, it could come with Glam Rock Emperor Palpatine ....

E-Wings are from Dark Empire aren't they? I could take them. V-Wings have no place in space... and I don't think the game would work well with fighters cheaper than the TIE Fighter (for the TIE Droid). DA has probably experimented with that anyway, but I'd rather have TIE/FOs than TIE Droids.

Nonsense, they're heavy. Heavy means kinetic energy. Just figure out a way to accelerate them fast enough and they make great torpedos.

Not to bring a dead horse back. :)

but in this whole discussion i've not seen any good suggestions as to what the stats for an SSD would be, if it was ever possible to have it physically on the table?

How many hull points?

How many shields and layout?

Command points?

Squadron command points?

Engineering points?

Defence tokens?

Squadron defence?

Hull fire arcs?

How many attack dice and which color, forward / port / star. / aft ?

What type of upgrade types available?

And last but not least, how many fleet points should an SSD cost ???

I'm just curious to know what oppinion you all have on this?

Ah it's back...Good...Good! I can feel the anger of many opposed to the Super Star Destroyer...It is unavoidable.

Anyhow, there were some interesting idea's on how they could work in Armada but its burried in 39 pages. Personally I like the idea of having several sections with their own hull points.

A front "tip" section with 10 shields and 12 hullpoints, 8 red, 6 blue and 2 black dice.

A left and right midsection with 8 shields and 12 hullpoints each, and 5 red + 5 blue and 2 black dice each.

And a rear section with 6 shields and 10 hullpoints, and 4 red + 2 blue dice.

Defense tokens: 3-4x brace, 3-4x redirect, 2x contain

Command value 5, squadron 8 and engineering 7, anti squadron fire about 4 or 5

To make this somewhat 'balanced' it would have to have a rule were it would count as destroyed when 2 of the 4 hull sections are destroyed: at which point it would be too crippled to fight. So focus fire from 3-5 ships would bring it down, but overconfidently surround it with ships and it can take on a medium sized fleet on its own. It would also have to be slow and turn incredibly poorly (1 yaw at the first click only?) It should cost around 300 points and not have access to gunnery teams. Essentially it should be able to outfight 2 ISD's, but not 3 concentrating fire on one side, that would feel 'right' to me.

IT LIVES!

Just in time for a wave 3 announcement! Coincidence? I think not!

;)

Just one arc. Dice: All of 'em, including any you can steal from your opponent, at any range.

Hehe

I thought the two-ship-card solution from x-Wing was the way to go. Have each section worth a certain number of points when destroyed but both sections have to be blown up to totally destroy the ship. Counts as two thirds of a list, able to fight multiple ships by itself, escort is only small ships or fighters outside of an epic campaign setting. *Shrug*

I dunno, with the rebels now outgunning the Empire with Ackbar lists I kind of crave the existence of a Super Star Destroyer to give the Empire the indisputable crushing capital heavyweightof the game. This will force Ackbar to work hard to defeat it, just like Rebels in the beginning had to be crafty to defeat the VSD.

Just one arc. Dice: All of 'em, including any you can steal from your opponent, at any range.

Nah, Torpedo sphere attacks require every dice on the table. SSDs would be more realistic with actual pools. Superlaser is "during the strategy phase, target enemy ship is destroyed."

5 red, 5 blue front arc.

3 red, 3 blue side arcs.

2 red, 2 blue rear arc.

5 shields front

3 shields side and rear

13 hull

4 command

4 squadron

4 engineering

1 brace

2 redirect

1 contain

Cost: 140 - 150

I understand people want a steamroller. Essentially I think the stats of an SSD will be slightly superior to an ISD. The way FFG will make it "feel big" will be in the title cards, and potentially the amount of upgrade slots. It'll be on a large base but the ship model will probably be the same size as an imperial.
