Super Star Destroyer discussion thread

By Eagle128, in Star Wars: Armada

This thread is obviously to discuss the SSD, lack thereof, and why it will/will never be built.

I am doing this so we can prevent other posts from being SSDed.

So please share your thoughts, be nice and, "Fly casual."

Hope it does get released and though I know it won't be to scale. I don't care, possible size being about the size maybe a little bigger than the epic corvette in xwing.

Good idea.

Based on the size of the ISD and price they might actually be able to do one in "relative scale". Not holding my breath but it might just work.

It will happen. People will complain about its scale and stats. I will still buy it.

i bet it happens in wave 7.

What would be funny is if they built a Collectors version to scale! 5 1/2' long, 3' wide and about 95lbs. Price? If you have to ask! Just remember to bring a friend to help you lift it.

But it would be cool if they came up with a SSD like ship similar to how they came up with the Raider for X-Wing for epic games. Same with the Rebels.

They could do an Allegiance-class SSD (essentially a bigger badder ISD) for Armada, but considering an Executor-class is 10x the size (length-wise, its mass is much more than a simple 10x increase) of an ISD, with 10x the firepower, it would have to have a 100 dice attack and cost 1000pts all by itself to be in scale at all.

A minimized version of the Executor which is simply worth 3 ISDs they might do, although it doesn't do the might of the Executor justice.

If I bring up the Interdictor cruiser in this SSD thread, would this thread be "interdicted"? :)

Nice! That ship WILL be released.

:)

I've seen an extremely well detailed Neb b model on shapeway in "Xwing scale." The thing looked stunning all painted up proper. But to the tune of $300, and unpainted, I'm not sure I'd ever buy into it. That doesn't make it any less impressive to see on the table. I think this is how I'll feel about an SSD.

To say that the SSD would have to roll 100 dice is...not right. I mean how many dice does a CR 90 throw? 2? 3? And the Vic throws 6. Does that mean that a Vic only have x2 or x3 the fire power of a corvette? I dont think so, but correct me if im wrong. Its a relative scale guys.

Also, do we know the measurements of the ISD? IMHO, if its the size of the x wing transport, then if the SSD was the size of the x wing corvette, even an inch or two longer, that would work for me. And that would mean a manageable length.

That's the issue they are Fricken Huge! And scaling them down more than half their size to fit the game would look dumb next to an ISD and not do it justice. That's the discussion here.

But im saying that a scaled down SSD would look nice.

Well I still have my Star Wars Starship Battles mini's so I have at least 1 of these. I think the price point would be the deciding factor. I would love to be able to assemble the Death Squadron. As soon as I can wrap my rotting brain around a set of stats I will post them if anyone is interested.

If all you want is a scaled down model of the Executor, I can direct you to the website of a guy who makes garage kits that are a little more than a foot long. They are highly detailed and look fantastic. PM me for the info.

What those of us on the other side are saying is, no, it wont look nice. It will look utterly silly. Think about this for a second: When we first see the Executor in ESB, its shadow overwhelms some ISDs. As the camera pans back, we see a massive ship. One so huge it is clear that several ISDs can fit in its cavernous hanger bay. The size ratio between an SSD and an ISD is even greater than an ISD and a CR90. Along with that is at least a proportional, if not exponential, increase in offenive and defensive weaponry, fighter carrying ability and other things.

How can that possibly be represented in any kind of serious way in this game? Especially with no known Rebel counterpart. To make it playable it won't, correction: it CAN NOT BE the Executor we saw in ESB. It will have to be a ship easily taken out by gimmicky plot devices like an out of control A-wing... Still upset about that by the way. That could only have been worse if Jar-Jar had been piloting the A-wing....

The fact the Rebels had no SSD equivalent is also very true. No star ships were made that big before and it was the Tarkin Doctrine that brought about its construction. Even though the Death Star was the final goal of the Tarkin Doctrine the SSD's were also built with the same idea in mind, a ship that large able to devastate a whole planet alone (think bombardment with a SSD) would make any planet unwilling to support a rebellion without fear of being destroyed. A doctrine of fear.

So to play that ship down and weaken it so it can be in the game goes against what that ship is all about.

Agreed but, I think that would have been a net gain for the franchise ;)

Bulwark Battlecruiser.

Bulwark Battlecruiser.

Ok. Didn't that only make an appearence in the old game Rebellion? I would hope something better than that could be used. Even if it's something like the Imperial Raider that has to be made up for the game. The Bulwark always struck me as the result of someone looking at a picture of a whale in desperation for a SSD counterpart.

The Bulward was 2,500 m the Executor SSD was 19,000 m. Not the same class of ship. (Also it looks like a ship Lord Helmet would fly, like it really looks like a helmet.)

Just for refference an ISD I&II are 1,600m long. Not that impressive.

Much later in the time frame but wasn't the Viscount Star Defender the New Republic's response to the Executor Class? I''d love to see both as epic size ships for Armada. That would be an amazing battle to behold.

I still doudt there will be "epic armada" I mean epic x-wing really wasn't that much of a success and the game is all ready suppose to take between 1 & 2 hours so an epic armada even with only 5-600 points would still likely take twice that!

and a 4 hour game is not a realistic expectation for ffg to realease,

so they made the imperial raider because they felt x wing needed an imperial huge ship. If they make a SSD will they make a rebel SSD equivalent?

If they do it will be against what all the books tell us... (not that they care about that anymore)
