Biv Bodhrik

By Leveton, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

OK, so you've probably seen Biv Bodhrik from the first preview of Twin Shadows. But let's get into more detail about him.

Without knowing what his starting weapon or class cards are, he looks a bit like a mix of Fenn Signis and Gaarkhan, in that he is a high-health guy who has a mix of melee and ranged abilities. His basic stats are all pretty good, except for his insight skill, which is as bad as it can be.

Of course, the main event when talking about Biv is his Close and Personal ability. For 2 strain and an action, you can make a red/yellow melee attack and follow it up with a ranged attack from your gun. It's powerful enough on it's own, possibly giving you three attacks in a turn if an enemy is foolish enough to stand too close to you. Because the two attacks have to target the same figure, it's best to use it against an enemy that isn't likely to die from the melee attack (it will average 3 damage and 1 surge, and has a maximum of 5 damage). Notably, it doesn't have any surge abilities of its own, so if you get a surge, the only thing you can do is clear a strain, making the net cost of the ability 1 strain. If you get another surge on the ranged attack and clear a second strain with it, you basically got a free extra attack, but you have to have the 2 strain free to initiate the ability. The red/yellow melee attack will become less useful as you start running into enemies with higher defenses, like Darth Vader, either walker, the Royal Guard Champion, or IG-88. It will be best used against mid-range miniatures, like the new Heavy Stormtroopers, elite Probe Droids, and either version of Nexu or Trandoshan Hunters.

His other ability, Deadly Precision, might not come into play a lot, because Biv is probably going to take a lot of strain moving around and using Close and Personal. But every once in a while, you'll roll minimum damage with one of your dice and come up one damage short of killing your enemy, and that's when Deadly Precision can shine.

So, speculation time. What do you think Biv's starter weapon will be like? Any ideas for what his class cards might do? Personally, looking at that portable cannon of his, I expect a blue/red starter weapon, maybe with a passive accuracy bonus, and either pierce or damage boosts as surge abilities. I wouldn't be surprised to see a class card that increases the damage (or gives surge abilities to, or both) of Close and Personal. I don't know what else to expect, though.

You seem to have pretty much nailed it. In my time with Descent 2E, I liked how levelling your character let you choose to highlight a particular feature of their abilities, and I can imagine that with Biv, your options will be about putting more juice into his melee or ranged, or some middle ground of the two. I would hope that his starting weapon is a typical starter rifle, and that his gun on the model/portrait (which looks to me like some kind of heavy-duty shotgun) is the loot you get for completing his personal mission, similar to Diala in the Core Set. Naturally it would be a near-over-powered close-range beast of a weapon, so it's something to aspire to.

Does anyone else think he looks like Bishop from the X-Men?

I find it interesting that Biv's right arm armour looks like it's from a Stormtrooper and has an orange shoulder pad with a "painted" Rebel Alliance logo on it :

Maybe, this whole Twin Shadows name is tied to Biv and this Kayn Somos? One betrayed the other and is now "Vengeful" or it could be a nod to Tatooine's twin suns, having a play on how dangerous things get after dark . . .

Anyway, it's all pretty intriguing to me.

I know, how dare that impudent Rebel scavenge from the fallen of our great Empire.

I think the Twin Shadows is a combination of Tatooine's twin suns and the two big bads in this box. Boba Fett and Somos.

Whoa! Whoa Gullwind! Shhhhhhh! Disney does not have the rights to the Mutants, so Ixnay on the X Men, ok?

All Heroes appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, Mutants, Metahumans, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Actually he reminds me more of Barrett from Final Fantasy VII (except obviously without the machine gun hands).

I wonder if Somos is one of the remaining clone troopers... then they really would be "twin" shadows.

Even though he has an ability called Deadly Precision, that weapons doesn't strike me as something that's super effective at long range. Maybe RG with a native accuracy boost. or just RGG since it looks pretty beefy I wouldn't be surprised at a 3 dice attack. Though that could be an upgraded weapon he gets later in the campaign.

Forget the orange shoulder... the entire right arm apears to be in stormtrooper armour! Rather than it b somethng he scavenged or took as a trophy, I would prefer his story to be an ex-stormtrooper who saw the injustices first hand and defected.

Why would anyone defect from the glorious Empire?

False. Disney doesn't have the *movie* rights to X-Men. Marvel, as a subsidiary of Disney, still has the rights for comic books. I'm not sure about other rights, like board and miniatures games, though.
