My Road to Regionals (X-wing Diary)

By hothie, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I really like the look of that second scum veterans build. Palob is an absolute nightmare to go against from what I've seen (I haven't gotten a chance to play with or against him myself yet)

I may try cutting kath for palob and something else to see how he does.

The great thing is, if you go after palob first, you're leaving a ps10 tactician boba and ps9 autoblaster Kavil on the board. That's not an easy choice to make.

I haven't played it much, but FWIW, Adrenaline Rush and Inertial Dampeners gives you a LOT of flexibility for the 2 measly points they cost you. I have also been trying to work in Seismics for one more area denial threat.

Two games on the table last night. First game was against simonsays. i was running:

Patrol leader with Vader and Gunner
Kath with VI, Engine, mangler, Captive.

He was running 4 prototypes with Etahn. I was way too liberal with gunner vader on the PL, and so I took half of its hull out myself. An Injured Pilot crit later on kath, and it was pretty well over.

Then next game I switched up to my Scum Veterans 2 squad from a few posts above. I played against Jeff, a newer player running Howl, Mauler, Gundark, and 2 Sabers with ptl. He didn't really know how to attack my list. He brought the 2 sabers in fast, making the first engagement range 2, so I smoked one of them before it shot. Next round I finished off the other one and put 2 damage on mauler. Next round Fett one-shots howl in the rear arc and Gundark takes 2 damage. Next round I finish them off without taking much damage in return.

So the squad worked, but again, it was against a newer player who isn't familiar with formation flying, so take it fwiw.

I'm glad I got to meet you in Atlanta Hothie. I'll try my best to find you some addresses to send those packages to. It was a very looooong day.

A squad I did surprisingly well with in a casual tourney might be up your alley and I may be going back to it:

Kath Scarlet: VI, Tactician, Mangler, EU

Rexlar Brath: Lone Wolf, HLC, Hull Upgrade

I really like that Kath in the current meta (double stressing someone is a lot of fun) and Brath is just a pilot I like that could probably be substituted for another pilot or two depending on flavor. I do like how hard he hits and works nicely against some of the ships we're seeing a lot.

I have tried mangler Kath before with captive, against double ig. I was stressing the crap out of it, but I wasn't damaging it. You almost have to have gunner to get something through. Maybe drop the hull upgrade and tactician for gunner.

Actually, I've been thinking about a Kath kenkirk build lately.

I do like Gunner on Kath, and the tough part about the build is the offense. Essentially it comes from double stressing someone and then getting behind them and staying there, but Gunner may give the same effect.

I know we discussed it post game, but the Patrol Leader was about 8x scarier than Kath and while two ship lists won't be thrilled with Kath's control options or the PL's hull, it's going to be an uphill battle against BBBBZ or any kind of swarm.

Your scum 2 list though looks super fun and capable of tackling a variety of lists. Palob provides that "I need to kill this first otherwise I'm handicapped all game" effect while Boba can both attract and deal with larger groups of ships, leaving Kavil to dish out painful autoturret shots with impunity. All three are scary end-game ships (with Boba maybe being the weakest of the bunch).

I'd be curious to see how well that list does against some of the meta staples like Chirpy-Fel or Brobots.

I actually played Matt-Shadowlord on vassal last night running a super fat Han and fringer with mangler list. I could have had a better opening, but I did manage to burn down the fringer while Han went after fett. After fett died, I was getting shots on Han, but R2D2 kept regenerating a shield, gaining 6 throughout the game without rolling a single hit. I got him down to 2 hull left, but couldn't finish him.

I think I need to just fly better, because I know I can't keep up with a engine big ship with that list. So I need to bide my time and wait for the right moment. Otherwise, it was pretty solid. He left palob for last, and palob avoided damage for a very long time, spending focus often to so. He still died with 6 tokens and a tl on Han, and that was without recspec.

Was it a Fringer with Mangler and Outrider or just Mangler front cannon?

title as well

with an Intel Agent riding along

Han had engine, C3PO, R2D2, lone wolf, mf title, I think

Ahh ok, Siggi's list at UK Nationals. That's a strong list.

Hothie - what are your thoughts on opportunist on IGB with Gunner Boba? Boba will shoot first plus I could save opportunist for when IGB gunner triggers...if 3 attacks isn't enough to strip tokens then I should probably go ahead and pack up for the day...

Hothie, I like your new list of Bo-bots. The best defense is a strong offense and that offense should be able to make ships explode fast. Lone Wolf on IG88 should help to keep him in the late game. PS8 prolly isn't worth it for him overall depending on your local meta. Where I'm at, I haven't seen any Aggressors being flown.

Played a game on vassal against a brobots list.

I played Sable's list of:
Kath with Opportunist and K4
Palob with Opportunist, Blaster turret, Moldy Crow
Torkil with ion turret

I'm not as much of a fan of this Kath build as I am of VI, Tactician, and engine for the same amount of points, and my loadout would have worked better for me this game. He ended up winning, with a huge swing when I pulled a Munition failure on Palob, when I had a great shot lined up to kill his 2 hp IGB. I also had a shot to make it closer with a 5v4 opp shot opp shot on a 2 hull IGB, I rolled 2 hits and 3 blanks while focused.

Theorist suggested running 2 pirates instead of torkil, so I may run this tomorrow in KC:

Kath with VI, Tactician, Engine (45)
Palob with Opportunist, Blaster turret, Moldy Crow title (31)
X2 Pirates (24)

That's what I'm thinking as of now.

Opportunist gives you stress, and the IG with stress is usually not a good thing. Sounds pretty potent, though.

Kc regional today. 67 players. On the way down here, I came up with this list, and I'm running it, which I know is the wrong thing to do.

RAC with Determination, Rebel captive, fleet officer

Rexler Brath with Predator and hlc

My first game was against Logan on the twitch feed. He ran a Chirpy Fel list. I went after RAC, and traded him for rexler. So I knew that my captive chirpy just needed time to take down his Fel. He ran for a long time, but I got him in the end. 1-0, 153 mov

Second game was against Chris running a chewie dash list.

This was an extremely close game. Rexler drew a damaged cockpit early, which hurt. I was able to finish off chewie. Dash killed brath, and RAC ended up finishing off dash , having 1 hull remaining. I used Determination on 3 crits that game, which was huge. 2-0, 306 mov.

Round 3 vs Josh running a tie swarm. I went after his howl early and wasn't able to get her. Lot of bad decisions for me this game: going after howl instead of his APs,not spending focus on defense when I had it on brath, and not k turning because I thought he would block it (I would have). Lost this one 100-16. 2-1, 322 mov.

Round 4 vs Anthony running Han and 3zs. I burned the zs down quickly. Han got a damaged cockpit on him. He ended up finishing off rexler (2 hull with focus, 3 blanks), and RAC had multiple turns to finish off Han with tl and focus but couldn't do it. Han finished the game with 1 hull left, and the tl rolls deserted me at the end. That was a game I was doing the right things, and just couldn't get that last hit through. 2-2 360 mov.

Round 5 vs richard running a Han and Keyan build. He managed to finish off RAC and got rexlar down to 2 hull, but rexler pulled it out in the end. 3-2 507 mov.

Final round against Aaron steede running a kenkirk and whisper list. Whisper was afraid of my rebel captive, and rexler was able to crit kenkirk a lot. I lost rexler, but won the game 100-47.

So, I finished 4-2, with a legitimate loss to the tie swarm and a dice loss in round 4, so I'm happy with how it flew.

good show hothie!

Hothie, excellent show on the Nova Podcast. I was your first round opponent in Atlanta Regionals. A hell of a game, one that makes me love playing Xwing. Thanks for the mention on the show. 8)

Would still love to see how your boba/IG-B list is going. I'm testing mine out and it did well at a small local tournament, beating out Soontir/Chiraneau, Whisper/Echo/Doomshuttle, and a Dash/Jake list Gonna try it out more. Just can't decide on HLC/FCS on the IG-B or Predator/AdS/Mangler combo.

Played a vassal game last night vs Scott running a RAC Whisper list. I got a bug to try out some things that have never been seen before, especially not together.

Rexler with Ruthlessness, hlc, cluster missiles

Royal Guard Pilot

OGP with Fleet Officer and AdvS

AdvS and FO on the shuttle means I can give both Brath and RGP focus, then green to clear stress. That allows Rexler to use his ability, and essentially gives RGP ptl without the stress.

First combat round he takes range 3 shots at the RGP, who has focus and evade tokens and uses them both to take no damage. He still uses Vader to give me a weapons malfunction. My return fire sees brath hlc 4v0. I had to spend my focus for 4 hits, and whisper lost a shield due to ruthlessness. He evaded the RGP 2v1 shot, and the shuttle put a Minor Hull Breach on RAC, which won't matter at all unless he gets a damaged engine.

Next round I again use FO, shuttle lands on debris, so is stressed, RGP goes 5K to get into RACs way and get a shot on whisper, since she really only had 1 way to decloak. Brath goes 2 fwd, going from 1 debris to another. Whisper 2 bank in and evade, with all 3 of my ships pointing at whisper, and RAC hits the RGP as planned. I didn't want to take another Vader hit, so I figured blocking RAC would be the best option. RAC rolls one hit vs brath, which was evaded. Then whisper rolls 5v1 at my shuttle, 1 hit and 4 eyes, which my shuttle actually evaded so that whisper couldn't get her focus. Brath then naturally rolls 2h2c which took whisper down to 1, (shuttle took the ruthlessness hit cause RAC was just out of range). And the RGP naturally rolled 3 hits to finish off whisper.

We called it there cause RAC was at 9 hull vs my squad, which had only taken a Vader crit for damage. My dice were super hot due to vassal's streakiness, so I'm not sure how much to take from this game. It was interesting, though, because the squad worked like it should have.
