Anybody running solo IG-88?

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

I just ran Iggy B with 2 binayre pirates and 2 black sun soldiers and man, it was super fun.

Iggy had PTL, mangler, FCS, autothrusters, inertial dampeners, and a seismic charge.

I used the 4 Z's as a screen, circled iggy around the back, and then went to work. Turtling the aggressor while autothrusters are active turn it into a big interceptor with the load out of a shuttle. I was able to drop the seismic for 3 damage, and got an intertial dampeners/mango roll for trip crits that all landed.

It was a very fun game, and I look forward to flying it again.

Xizor, IG-B and two pirates is a reasonable list with just one

I've dabbled with an 88C with Advanced Sensors, Autothrusters and Predator. I ran him with Torkil Mux (with Blaster Turret and Recon Specialist) and two Black Sun Soldiers with Feedback Arrays. It worked reasonably well for a non-B list.

I fly in 2 list so on:

IG88C (Autoblaster, Push the limit, Fire control system, Autothrusters, Feedback array) with Kavil (VI, Autoblaster turret, Unhinged astromech) and Mux (Greedo, Autoblaster turret)

and

IG88c (the same upgrades without feedback) and Firespray (so on Scarlet and Boba).

In both lists he is very good, and often stay last. And with this upgrades he perform all actions he can ;)

I seen a solo ig88 and a firespray at last tourney but didn't play him so don't know what exactly he was running. he did not top 8.

Better than that, I have run 88C naked in a list (with Guri and a couple of exploding Z's). It really surprises me that no one seems to have considered naked Aggressors, but to my mind they get real expensive real quick. It is a slippery slope. Sure Autothrusters are a no brainer, so add 2pts, advanced sensors really helps them avoid blocking (add 3 more). Well, I've already taken him to 41 points, may as well chuck an EPT on him...and it goes on. For 36 points they are already pretty good, so I am playing around with no upgrades whatsoever. It has been interesting.

Done it once with scyk and y-wing support it worked well.

The point about a naked Aggressor is a good one. It´s so tempting to use all the upgrade slots but in the end these ships tend to be blocked to hell. When they lose their actions they are basically just glorified Defenders which nobody is terrified of. A single naked Aggressor leaves 64 points however, and the boost bonus of the IG88C is nice because large ship boosting can throw people off. I also agree that IG88C is the one to run naked.

If I run two, all they have are fire control systems. I only kit them out if I run a single.

That would be interesting to see an IG-88 with sismec charges and 4 Z-95s with dead mans switch.

I do, 'cause I only have one.

It's a superstar.

Not naked, but I did run one with just VI.

There are two main issues. Firstly, the popular IG88-B is rather pointless without a cannon upgrade, so no option to take him 'naked'. Secondly, in a Double-IG list, they will both have cannons, becoming 40pts each. Leaving 20 at best. Most single 20pts ships will go down very quickly, leaving your scantly clad IGs against the full enemy force - and in a tournament, giving away 20 points isn't a good idea either. Nah, I'd rather run them as a pair, with a bucketload of upgrades to make them really cool. Besides, those Autothrusters are just amazing, almost certainly stopping several hits even when not facing turrets - great investment.

My opponent in two games yesterday did remark that he preferred facing both IGs over just one (when the first was killed) though - when there were two, he could switch his attention and at least have something to shoot (he ran three X-Wings). With only one remaining, it was much more difficult to get anything in his sights, with the IG dancing around with boosts, loops and at some crucial point a 0 maneuver.
