New "Hobbie" Build?

By Baron Soontir Fel, in X-Wing

Targeting Astromech is basically PTL for Hobbie off K-turns. Do a red, assign stress, get a TL, lose stress, take your focus (or VT barrel roll) action, profit.

I played a few games with him lately and found the hardest thing was finding that perfect lane in the scrum to just K-turn over and over like a TIE Defender. If you can get there, he's good. If not, he doesn't get to do his tricks and just dies as a wasted investment.

It is never useful to run R2-F2. Unfortunately, a lot of the Trashtromechs from wave 1 are just hot garbage. Wasting three points and and an action for an extra green die is worse than simply taking a focus action. Your odds of rolling an eye on two green dice is better than rolling an evade on the extra die.

Except in missions. I'm going through the CR90 campaign and Biggs with R2-F2 is great. The CR90 can use the Coordinate action to give him 2 actions, so he gets a Focus and an extra Agility die. They can't target the CR90 for a few crucial turns until it gets away.

Epic Play Card Restrictions

This section describes official restrictions and changes to card text in Epic X-Wing tournaments:

• Biggs Darklighter’s card text should read “Other friendly small and large ships at Range 1 cannot be targeted by attacks if the attacker could target you instead.”

• Navigator cannot be equipped to huge ships.

Edit- I guess you can do whatever you want in missions but intent is clear that Biggs should not affect huge ships.

Hobbie is a cheap defender. Stop making him more expensive.

If we could only get Hobbie in a Y-Wing...

I used Hobbie's pilot ability in Heroes of the Aturi Cluster with a Y-Wing & Targeting Astromech. Suddenly your ordnance hog and/or TLT platform becomes amazing. Add Vectored Thrusters to taste.

R2-D6 Astro gives you the EPT slot.

Personally I go with Targeting astro for stress free K turns :-)

Cheers

Woo! This is why forum browsing at 1:37am isn't always the greatest idea - you miss things.

Would it be useful to run R2-F2 and experimental interface? No evade action can be somewhat offset and help keep him around, can still focus on his turn and can take the usual Dutch escort to generate the TL.

Thanks for the input! So I guess that "trashtromech" wouldn't even be of use with the experimental interface (as it is more points sunk in). I had just thought:

- Dutch passes a TL your way

- Focus as your action

- EI triggers and you get your +1 evade die

- Shoot at target and spend TL to remove stress from EI

- Still have a focus and +1 green

I do like the idea of running him with Opportunist though. Will give that a try for sure.

Try to pair him with Wes and Dutch. Wes strip the token to help Opportunist trigger, and Dutch gives Hobbie the TL for a focus+TL attack. Or, wait and watch your opponent face when you'll do a K-Turn with Hobbie and then use Dutch to give him a TL and clear the stress, effectively making the maneuver a white k-turn. Priceless.

Or, just play an X7 Defender that always has a White K-Turn and better stats for a very similar price and isn't dependent on two frail allies to keep it functioning.

Aesthetically that's really an impossibility.

It's actually even better: Hobbie focuses, triggers EI and gets the stress. THEN Dutch (being a higher PS and activating after Hobbie) passes him a TL and removes the stress. Hobbie can then spend the lock or not, as needed.

Hmmm....I didn't know this. Thanks.

It is a hard campaign for the CR90. I thought FFG always made the campaigns one sided so that the ship it came in won, but this makes it really hard for the Rebels to win most matches. Without Biggs, there isn't a lot of hope.

Oh, I know! My guy has Nera Dantiels, Hobbie, Predator, and Targeting Astromech. I go throwing Proton Torpedoes out like no tomorrow. I even finish missions with one Torpedo left as I just don't have a good target for it at times. It's crazy.
