Gates and Guarding monsters

By roneba2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Fellow investigators,

If in the first attempt to close a gate, the investigator fails, could he in the next turn, instead of dealing with the guardian monsters, jump again in the same gate? (of course, in that case being taunted by the others players with something like "chicken McFly?")

No, there are two reasons why this isn't possible: First of all, you have to deal with the monster during movement phase before beeing able to enter the gate during the encounter phase. Secondly, you have to leave the gate location to lose your explored marker, which is necessary to enter that gate again.

You will need a successful Evade check if the monster is still at the gates location before entering the gate again.

I agree with the "have to deal with the monster during the movement phase" part. However, I was under the impression that the explored marker just meant that you weren't automatically sucked through the gate not that the explored marker prohibited you from entering the gate. Surely if you evaded the monster first you could hop back through the gate again if you wanted to (if you were hoping the monster would wander off before you got back or if someone else was going to come deal with it).

I agree, it seems strange that you cannot get rid of the explored marker w/o moving. However, this is what the rules say:

  • This marker [the explored marker] remains in play as long as the investigator remains at the location. (page 8 / "Other World Movement")
  • 2. Gate: If the location has a gate, the investigator is drawn through the gate. He moves to the first area (the left area) of the Other World indicated on the gate marker.
Exception: Once an investigator has entered a gate and returned to Arkham, the player places an explored marker underneath his investigator marker. While he remains in the gate’s location, he is no longer drawn through the gate, but may instead try to close or seal the gate (see “Closing and Sealing Gates,” pages 16-17). If the investigator leaves the location before the gate is closed or sealed, discard the explored marker. If the investigator returns to the location later in the game, he will again be drawn through the gate. (page 9 / "2. Gate")

If this doesn't make sense to you, you can house rule that investigators may decide to discard their explored markers at any time, but this would be a house rule.

Thank you all, very much!
