Don't put Boba Fett on the box if Boba Fett is not in the box.

By TylerTT, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

So we have gone from rules lawyers to box art lawyers.

I saw the box art and the new characters in the news section and so read both.

Can you play the game with what comes in the box? Yes.

Do you have to buy extra miniatures if you don't want? No.

As to the box art, it's just that, something to grab your interest on a shelf of other games.

There are a lot of toon characters on cerel boxes, but you don't expect them to be in every box.

Board games are not essentials, they are add ons to life, nothing more, nothing less.

By the way, my TIE fighter avatar does not mean everyone gets a free one every time I post a message.

All the best.

Tell your dad if I wanted to play with cardboard discs, I'd break out my illustrious POG collection. Oh wait, psyche , they are super collectible and I would never tarnish their mint conditions, DUH.

They should totally make a game where players "flip" pogs end over end to simulate movement in a "pseudo-miniatures-game" fashion. I bet there would even be expansion packs where players could buy spheres that would across the battlefield!

But, back on topic , do you have an AT-ST pog? I'm sick and tired of the miniature and want to replace it with a disk.

Listen guys, let's cut to the chase.

Just about anybody who is being honest with themselves, in most areas of life, would like more for less.

  • More time with family for less time away
  • More money for less work
  • More product for less cost

It's not a foreign concept. There's a reason why very few restaurants don't serve you a whole MEAL as opposed to charging you "a la carte". I'd rather not pay $14 for the protein (read: meat), $6 for the vegetables and $4 for the starch. I'd rather pay $20 and get the value of paying for all of it together in a package. I'm fine with paying for my drink and my dessert extra because maybe I don't want a drink or dessert but when I order a meal, I want the main components of the meal.

* * *

Can we level with each other for a moment?

I think what most of the people who aren't happy with the expansion "AS IS" are trying to convey - rather than what this whole debaucle has digressed into... - that it would've been nice for FFG to include a little more value for what they're charging for the expansion and if Boba Fett is the main draw of the expansion, including ALL of him in the expansion would've gone a lot farther for making people happy as opposed to blatantly hooking people into buying a SEPERATE expansion for whatever reason (whether it's completionism, Skirmish, etc.) I VERY happily would've paid an extra $5 if they just included the Villain pack contents in the core box. It would've been a really great gesture to the fanbase to say "We COULD have bled you for every nickle and dime, but we'll toss you a little something" After all, there's nothing stopping them (it's obviously all on the same design schedule) from including everything in the expansion at a bundled price.

Nobody has said they expect EVERYTHING to be a miniature right outta the gate without any Ally packs... We're specifically talking about a big marquee character in the franchise prominently showcased in the ad material.

AT-ST POG?? Are you serious? The only, and I mean only , collectible POGs are Looney Toons Tasmanian Devil Slam Dunking a Basketball POGs. If you want to talk serious POG shop, you'll need to get on my level. Start by reading my newspaper blog - POG BLOG LOG, the Analog blog for POGs.

Boba Fett needs to be in the box. Period. As a dehydrated POG that you soak in water and it grows into a 3D miniature. Period.

Just a couple of points. The first one on box art. There is a character on the front of the original game that has no miniature. Also does it mean that all the background props should be in the box as well. No... Because I know it wouldn't make sense.

The other point is, the miniatures base for Solo or Chewie take up the exact same room in a square on a tile. If you have one, check it for yourself.

Miniatures enhance a game, it's up to people wether they want to bling out any game or not.

In the end, it's a piece of plastic, not gold.

No, you cannot play the Skirmish part of the game in a tournament following FFG's tournament rules with what is in the box.

Yes, you do have to buy the extra miniature to play the Skirmish part of the game in a tournament following FFG's tournament rules with what is in the box.

Cartoon characters are spokespersons(people?) for the product, I don't expect them to be in there. But when I go to the store and pick up a box that has a picture of Lucky Charms and the leprechaun on the front, I don't expect to have to turn around and read the back of the box or go to the General Mills website to find out that only the purple horseshoes are actually marshmallows. The rest of them are sold in a seperate box.

Cereal companies aren't displaying a picture "the eating experience" found within the box. They're providing a reasonably accurate depiction of the contents of that box.

By the way, the Imperial logo avatar I chose DOES mean that I enjoy playing Imperial and that I enjoy Star Wars in general. That's why I chose it and not the Rebel logo avatar... Because that would convey the wrong idea. I specifically chose that picture because I wanted to convey a specific idea. That's how that works.

I bet that's the Easter Egg FFG isn't telling us about!

I'm going home right now to soak my Han, Chewie, and IG-88 disks in water. I'm sure they'll grow into miniatures!

Wait... "Easter Egg"... it's almost "Easter"... coincidence? I think not! I'll be sure to post videos as soon as possible.

FFG has for the vast majority of it's Descent 2E expansions included miniatures inside the box of figures depicted on the external cover art.

Imperial Assault included every single mini of each figure depicted on the cover art of its box.

Now they set a precedent with this expansion that they can show ANY figure they want to on the cover, and only have to include a cardboard cut out inside.

Why this stands out is not necessarily that Boba Fett is on the cover, but that he is the only figure depicted, and is in fact not included as a miniature. It would have been perfectly ok had the cover art included ANY OTHER hero character who's mini was included, but for obvious marketing purposes they chose Boba.

They can for any future expansion depict any figure they want on the cover, without actually representing them in miniature form inside.

Sure, a cursory glance at the back of the box would indeed show (supposedly) the miniatures included, but its disingenuous to center the entire expansion around a single character on the front box art who isn't represented inside (by a mini).

Think about it. All they had to do was to show the 2 heroes fighting Boba, a heavy stormtrooper, and some tuskenn raiders and it would have been perfectly fine, in my opinion. At least then I get 4 of the 5 unique figures depicted as miniatures.

Sure, the die hard fanboys will be yelling "yeeey more content, I don't care I'm spending a fortune on it since I'm hooked to it 24/7".

Personally, I can't even justify these purchases without looking like an addict. I expect a sold product like a miniatures game to be complete, no tokens, but an actual complete set of miniatures

A company should at least "give you the impression" that they're acting in your best interest. I don't have that feeling here.

Eight pages on this topic? Seriously, guys? It's obvious that nobody is going to convince anyone to change their mind on this topic. Courtesy of xkcd No. 386.

This is for both sides, neither of which can allow the other to have the last word.

No one is forcing you to play in a tournament, that is your choice. If you want to do it, buy the figure.

Lets play this through shall we? lets look how this normally plays out right?

Customer:

"Hey Dave the LGS shop worker, I just saw there is an expansion for Imperial Assault with an awesome picture of Boba Fett on the Cover. Finally some Boba action on my gaming table, right? So he will be in this "mini campaign" they are calling this expansion right?"

LGS worker:

Answer option 1: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure he plays a major story in the story."

Answer option 2: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure he plays a major part in the story. Typically FFG, they sell the mini separately, but there is a token like in the core game for him in the box so you're good to go"

Customer:

"awesome, please put a copy on the side for me asap"

Customer pays.

Now look me straight in the Eye and tell me that you wouldn't be at least a little disappointed or maybe even feel a little taken advantage of if the shopworker took option 1 and you find out about the card board token when you open the box.

This is what this boils down to, and I challenge everyone here to tell me this is wrong. nah, forget that. I think this is what this comes down to, and everyone who says differently is just fueling the argument at this points.

I'm just curious: if somebody from FFG reads this, will they be amused or concerned?

First point, 10 clearly visible storm troopers + Darth Vader + Diala, Jyn and Fenn. If you go to a store right now and buy a box of Imperial Assault, every single one of those characters have at least one miniature physically included in the box. Also, everything is included for those characters to be used in a FFG organized play tournament. As for the terrain, nobody is talking about the terrain. Only talking about Miniatures, here.

Second point, well aware. Not in the very least what this thread is about, really not even sure why that came up.

To quote Ripley, "did iq's drop suddenly while I was away.?"

It's a game, get over it.

All the best.

Richard

Misleading? Yes, absolutely.

Worth 9+ pages of forum posts? No.

If you have a problem with it, send FFG an email explaining your issue . If they get enough, maybe they'll change the art.

Neither side is going to change the other sides mind on this. One side is nearly threatening legal action while the other is just saying they don't think it's a big deal.

One way or the other though, probably time to let this topic die.

Because the background props are on the box art, so someone might get the "odd" feeling that it should also be included.

If people believe everything on a box art should come with it, then they need to go and seek therapy.

All the best.

Once SW:IA gets a second edition, they'll probably stop including the dice with the game. You can buy a dice pack for the cheap price of $11.95 however at their store:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-imperial-assault/products/star-wars-imperial-assault-dice-pack/

They also included a way to map the symbols to regular 6-sided dice, claiming you can still play the game as is without harming the actual gameplay.

Next they will want a flying miniature as its on the box cover, oh, and a tower that blows up.

All the best.

Richard

I'm actually glad you brought up this analogy! It works perfect!

Gameplay is the "Main components" of the game. You have everything you need to play the game included and they charge you for the entire game. Now if you want to replace the cardboard token for a miniature (dessert in your example) then you have to pay extra.

Now, if the game required Boba Fett in order to play some missions and did not include the card, the cardboard token, or even the rules for Boba Fett, then we would be missing a main component to our "meal".

Powda - Boba Fett is just as playable in the campaign and skirmishes just as Han and Chewie were playable up until now. No - you cannot bring a Boba Fett token to a sanctioned premiere event such as regionals or championships, but I am sure TO's will allow the use of tokens in your everyday store tournaments if you had to.

The fact of the matter is - everything in this box is 100% playable. The Boba Fett mini is not included in the game, but he is featured and a big part of the expansion - which is exactly why he is on the box. No one is trying to fool you - they are showing you a picture of a depiction of a scene that may or may not play out within the campaign mission.

If they were to include all of your demands (Boba Fett, R2D2, C3p0 and Kayn minis included, along with additional cards within) this expansion would be much more expensive than it already is. They are addressing multiple target markets as best as they could. This is a perfect solution for players who play the campaign, but don't really care for the skirmish AND for players who only play skirmish and don't really care for campaign. They cannot satisfy all possible target audiences.

Boba Fett is on the box because Boba Fett is included in the box. The game is 100% playable without his figure just as the core set was 100% playable without Han Solo's figure. I am sorry that you don't like this sales model - but don't purchase it, or talk to an FFG rep if you truly don't like it.

I agree. Who does this company think it is? I'm just a simple man trying to have fun with a star wars experience, and FFG keeps doing all these hypothetical things just to make a quick buck. I've had enough. This game is dead anyways and has been for a while.

And if all the minis were in the box to start, then the same people would be moaning about the cost.

All the best.

Richard

Third edition will be fancy box that includes only cardboard and a reference to their store to buy the actual miniatures (and don't forget the dice). Hey, you can still play the game.

Straight from the announcement page:-

What’s more, three new Ally Packs and Villain Packs offer detailed plastic figures to replace tokens included in Twin Shadows . With these expansions, you can provide figures for the iconic heroes and villains introduced in this expansion: the loyal Droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett, or the Stormtrooper commander, Kayn Somos.

So...... unless you can't read, you cannot fail to miss the point that you have to buy the minis.

Even though I probably shouldn't response since you arrogantly try and dismiss anyone who opposes you before they have a chance to, I would not be disappointed. I wasn't disappointed when I opened Labyrinth of Ruin and it had a picture of an awesome looking Queen Ariad on the front, but I had to get a Lieutenant pack to get the actual miniature. It was fun enough playing the campaign and playing as her. Why would this be any different?
