Don't put Boba Fett on the box if Boba Fett is not in the box.

By TylerTT, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

A Fett mission (or two) is bound to be in the box (and I bet they're definitive), just like there are IG-88 and Weiss missions in the main box despite IG-88 and Weiss being sold separately. You get Fett's card and token, that'll be all you really need to play his missions. If all you want is the figure, they did you a service by separating them. You're guaranteed good Fett content no matter what you buy. Me, I'm buying everything. If you were a truly pious Fett worshiper, you'd be doing the same thing. ;)

How about a revised box:

And by the way, the side of the real box shows R2-D2.

people who want a Boba Fett toy are not going to look at the details, thats why this matters as opposed to Descent leaders. People who buy this thinking the model is in the box are going to be very disappointed. is that the experience FFG is looking for?

BTW, Patox, there isn't a star destroyer miniature in the box, why is it still on the cover?

You know, you could put up Jar Jar holding hands with an Ewok buddy, and the USS Enterprise flying in the background, and I'd still buy it. IA is great. Only the box contents matter.

What annoyed me more was that FFG describe a black guy as a "vengeful guerrilla". (Face meet palm.)

From the art I got the impression he's not black, just rough and gruff and tempered by Tatooine weather. Could depend on minitor settings I guess.

I'm just glad FFG didn't decide to make Boba only available in the box.

I think that's actually a very good point. This way you can include boba in your other campaigns without having to buy Twin Shadows.

People wanting to buy a boba fett toy will pay 40$ for a large box, instead of 10$ for the smaller box also featuring him on the cover? Also ... 40$ for a small plastic figure .. I think you are streching here. :D

Honestly, I think you are the only one to try and put a connection there.

On another note he looks like a great hero with an excellent ability. I also like his Storm Trooper scavenged armour.

Agreed, he does look a cool character. That said, I'm not "trying to put a connection there" - the connection is immediately apparent in a homophone that some idiots are going to have a field day with.

3 Attacks during a round with 3-4 strain expended (depending on how far you have to go) sounds utterly terrifying as IP.

To be honest I didn't even get what you were hinting at the first time and had to actually think about it. It only dawned on my now that you actually meant the homophone of Guerilla and Gorilla. Because, it actually isn't a homophone in the first place right? Not a native speaker, but I think they should be different.

Wow, some people waste so much effort searching for things to be offended by.

It's not about searching to be offended, it's about putting the effort into thinking about the language we use. You have the right to apathy, fair enough. There are people at my LGS who will be all over this with their special brand of comedy racism. Just because it doesn't offend you shouldn't mean that we don't have the discussion.

Boba Fett is a religion to some people.

That's not justication to do anything. Fett is no doubt a big part of the story and is part of the marketing. Plus if he was included as a model the price would go up because they couldn't sell it separately. You get a token which is all you need to play the game so it's not even like this is false advertising.

Maybe in the near future, we'll get a box full of tokens and no miniatures. You'll have to purchase every miniature separately.

They'll add a small tag to the box stating "Miniatures sold separately". Think of the prices man, we're dealing with plastic here after all. Adding a single tiny plastic miniature would increase the price by $10 on its own. Be grateful that FFG is doing this.

When I first bought the game I saw the cover art which included 3 heroes, 9 troopers and Vader, all of which were included within the box and I thought they made a good job.

I really wouldn't mind Boba Fett being sold separately but this is one of those actions that will put a frown on faces rather than a smile... and eventually reduce sales. Two reasons:

* If someone gets baited thinking the box includes Boba Fett, comes home and discovers that leaflet which says "buy Boba Fett separately for $10", he/she will probably never buy the franchise again.

* People will probably tend to buy Boba Fett blister rather than the whole thing. A box needs to include some shiny characters in order to make people spend $40.

I doubt it will reduce sales. We're talking Star Wars here and FFG knows this.

Just because it doesn't offend you shouldn't mean that we don't have the discussion.

What I wanted to point out is, that the connection is so far removed from most adults that the developers themself probably didn't thought about it. I don't fault you for bringing it up, and to be honest, I wouldn't care if it were changed to some other term. It's a virtual character with no bigger connex to the universe. Call him a vengeful commando or something.

First thing I thought when I saw the box is "I'll bet there is no Fett mini."

Found out I was right.

So I'm trained to know better. Is that a good thing?

Always a shame when something you like just confirms how the real world works. And Star Wars has the power to push greed to the limit where with other properties it might cost sales.

If it upsets you all you can do is make that known, don't buy it, and most importantly don't be that way yourself.

My main concern is that the front of the box is JUST Boba Fett. Nothing else.

Quite often (always?) with the Descent expansions they'd show the new heroes fighting/adventuring with the main villain in the background. The main villain would have usually been a massive figure (e.g. Dragon) so the purpose of selling that figure separately seemed justified.

Here, however, Boba is just the same size as a normal hero (I ask, would people prefer 1 hero and Boba or 2 heroes?) plus the box art is ALL Boba Fett. No heroes, no Tusken Raiders. It's as though they don't want the new heroes getting in the way of their marketing message. Basically, "Buy this box because it's BOBA FETT. BOBA FETT!!!". That's what they're trying to say with that box. The reality is "YAY!!! BOBA FETT!!! Oh, he's just a token....". Whether you care about it or not, that feels disingenuous to me.

The upshot is that a lot of people are ultimately going to be disappointed. Sure, a lot of them will quickly get over it and even more will still buy it (even those with clenched fists). However, little by little, the good will towards FFG will slip away and that can't be good; for either us or them.

Yep, I don't feel as compelled to buy every lieutenant in case of Descent than compared to some big franchise like Star Wars. I got IA relatively cheap (omg, only 70 euros? I'd have called that expensive a few years ago) and made a deal with myself that I won't buy anything additionally until I've played the game more than 20 times or so.

Having to play with merely tokens does feel like you're playing the game in some "shareware" mode, some demo mode.

"If you like this game, you can get the full game by buying all these packs today "!

These are cheap milking tactics to me, I don't care what comes with those packs or even if they're supposedly worth it. They add hooks to other products that you'll need to buy to complete your originally bought product.

Everybody's complaining for the wrong reason. It doesn't matter what's on the box art, EVERYTHING unique should be in the box, and EVERYTHING non-unique should be a figure pack (with, say, one group worth of figures and two or three groups worth of tokens in the box), as it should have been in the core set and wave 1. Expecting people to buy FOUR COPIES of the boxed product (the last one just for the sake of a fourth non-elite deployment card!) to get a full playset is ridiculous.

They add hooks to other products that you'll need to buy to complete your originally bought product.

Oh no, a business is setting up their products in such a way to get you to buy more of their products. I can't believe they would do such a thing. I mean no other company in the world does this...

How dare they put everything you actually need in the box, but offer additional high quality products to enhance the game.

Seriously, it would require a fairly dim child to walk into a store and buy this box, and really be upset when they find out that it didn't include a Boba Fett mini in the box. Because they didn't bother looking at the back of the box or just noticing that one is for sale in an expansion pack next on the same shelf.

I'm not denying that FFG is a company, and a company's prime focus is making money.

There is a difference here however.

Let's say that FFG brings out the Empire Strikes Back movie. And instead of the ground battle of hoth, you get to see some rolling intro-like star wars screen narratively telling you what happened in those scenes. At the end of that text, they'll link you to their products page to buy the Battle of Hoth in a special package and you get some bonus footage along with it.

I'd say that's milking the customer, and somebody like you would tell me that companies are supposed to make money so suck it.

Sold products should be complete on its own. This is a miniatures game where a subset of the miniatures are tokens. Go figure.

I'd rather have all the non-unique guys in the box. And the heroes and unique figures separate.

That way I can get extra map tiles for Skirmish along with copies of the non unique figures.
