Is Fenn Signis & Troopers Worth The Points?

By Metal Mutant, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I've only played 4 skirmish games so far and am considering some new Rebel lists. Fenn's buff to troopers looks ok, his bottom line stats and attack are ok, his surge abilities ain't that hot and he's 9 points. By himself I don't think I'd take him, with a couple squads of regular troopers and the new Strength In Numbers & Reinforcement command cards played on the troopers he might be pretty good. Aim, Assault, and, with a little luck, dead figure replacement & a consecutive activation for the troopers plus multiple blue red green attacks from Fenn. 21 points for a Fenn & 2 squad combo. Is that worth it?

I don't think Trooper Assault is why you should take Fenn or Rebel Troopers. I think you take them on their own merits, if you're going to do it. Assuming you're positioned to benefit from it, it's one extra blue/yellow/aim a round (remember, it's limited to once per round). It's a very nice bonus, but not why you take either deployment card. If you take Fenn, it's because you want the Rebels' best shooter for the point cost. Blue/green/red is an average of 4 2/3 damage, 4 5/6 accuracy, and 1 1/3 surges per attack. And you take Rebel Troopers because you want the extra figures on the board, either for grabbing objectives, screening for more important figures, or just to get more attacks.

If you want what both of them bring on their own, then Trooper Assault is icing on the cake. But it isn't why I would team them up.

Edit: If the new "heavy" hero has the trooper type (I'm expecting trooper and heavy weapon) but doesn't have assault, they might be worth pairing up. I expect he'll have a pretty strong attack but not assault.

Thanks Leveton. Maybe I'm putting more faith in that combo than is warranted.

Don't misunderstand me. I think they both have some really strong points. Fenn's offensive output is great, and Rebel Troopers can give you a lot of flexibility on strategy. Both are worth putting in a Rebel list. And if you put them in a Rebel list together, there's some good synergy. I'm just saying the synergy isn't so great that it's what you want to build a list around.

Got it, thanks. I have yet to put either in a list and so far have only used the Saboteurs as a "grunt" choice when I could have used the Troopers.

So I know people rarely run with Fenn anymore, but I have a question. Trooper Assault says limit once per round. Does that mean the ability itself is limit once per round, or is it Limit Once per round per trooper? So if I have a group of troopers in range, can Fenn allow each of them to Assault, or just the one figure?

I'm assuming the answer is the figure not the group, but I'm a little unclear on the wording.

Fenn seems like he'll really benefit from the new Echo Base troopers. Trooper Assault will make them very dangerous, especially against an opponent within three squares.

Fenn Signis waits for the Rebel Radar Cannon, which is a Trooper ...

With all those great trooper coomand cards around and comming this could be great list

Here is a squad I found on IA Army Builder; http://ia-armies.com/army/Luo16l7J

I don't know who put it together, but it does look to fit the theme of this thread.

How do you guys think this squad would perform on either Kuat Space Station or Mos Eisley Canina skirmish maps? In particular vs 4x4 or other meta?

Personally I would drop 1 unit of rebel troopers for Elite Reb Sabs + C-3PO. And perhaps Fenn for Biv, however that is moving too far from the theme of the thread!!!

Or in that last comment would conclude that I don't think the points are worth it! I think I need a few more matches on the current maps before giving a conclusive answer.

I played against Fenn with 2 squads of elite Rebel troopers, it was a nightmare, so many 3 dice attacks it was not funny (well the game was lots fun actaully). The assault on trooper thing was not game winning but a good ability and gave my opponent some extra attacks when needed.

I think a list like this might be severly overlooked by most, thanks to focus on the troopers, aim bonus, and the Pierce 2 they are so good against anything with black dice.

Even Royal guards have problem with them in my experience.

Try it.
