So: new novel. Starts after Jedi- so probably overwriting Truce at Bakura. I'm not familiar with the writer, but maybe you folks are?

So here's the thing... I never actually read the Heir to the Empire Trilogy. And now I find myself in a difficult position. I'm finishing up my last semester of school so any reading I do between now and May, needs to be school work.... However after that I'm free to try to read as much as I can. (I read slow so hopefully I can manage at least 2 books before the end of the year).
I'd like to read Zahn's trilogy first, but then I'm like maybe I shoudl ignore it and JUST read Aftermath - I'll probably be less confused.... but I simply don't know what to do! AhhhH!
Read it. Screw it if it remains canon or not. Still a fairly good Star Wars read.
If you haven't read any EU - Legends at this point, I probably wouldn't bother. The Zahn trilogy is decent (I have some issues with it), but you can always go back and read it in the future.
Aftermath will be very interesting to see what of the EU they will keep and what they will make essentially non-existent.
I'm secretly hoping Thrawn is still introduced....
I have read some. I've read :
Tales of the Bounty Hunters
Tales from Mos Eisely.
Shadows of the Empire
Kevin J. Andersons Jedi Academy Trilogy
Darksaber
I think that's about it. I'm still interested though, because I do expect them to include key charaacters like Mara Jade and Thrawn at some point... and having read the original Heir to the Empire trilogy will probably provide an interesting contrast to however they introduce them.
I wanted to know more of the E.U. when episode 7 was annouced so I started with Heir to the Empire series, got halfway through the Rogue Squadron series, and have "I,Jedi" sitting on my bookshelf unread for the past year.
The list of books for the E.U. was HUGE, something like a couple hundred books covering 4000 years BBY up to around a couple hundred after ROTJ.
I may read up on a new novel coming out but it would have to be pretty good to get me to read it.
I may pick up "Aftermath" and sample it. I would like to know a least a bit of the story going into the movie, like which characters are being kept as canon and what factions are at play. I dunno, I'll give it a try I think.

I will have to se for myself but I doubt it will write out Bakura because the new novel looks to have nothing but new Reb characters, and we already knew from the past novels that parts of the empire becme mini empires hostile towards anyone not them.n
Should you read the Thrawn trilogy? Let me put it this way: after Jedi came out, Star Wars was slowly tapering off and becoming an interesting side story. Then Heir to the Empire was published. Suddenly Star Wars was alive again. The Expanded Universe was launched. Years later, Lucas did the Prequel movies, but it didn't really matter, because_
_we still had Thrawn_.
So, if you're a fan of Star Wars today, in 2015, do read the books that sustained the fandom during the dark times, during the prequel era.
I am happy to hear this. While I like a lot of EU, The Thrawn Trilogy being at the peak of that list, I was not overly fond of the Truce at Bakura , so I am quite intrigued at what this storyline may bring.

Its all going to either be written out or severely changed. Cloudy the future is. I have an easy solution for you. If you want to keep your current EU intact, don't read any of the new novels, don't go see any of the new movies, don't watch any new TV series.

Pretty much this. That is my favorite trilogy and some of the best single books I've read. IIRC, Zahn was also the first author allowed by Lucasfilm to use the main characters.
The Thrawn trilogy may yet be compatible with Disney's reimagined Long time ago:
from starwasrs.com:
The war is not over.
The second Death Star has been destroyed. Rumors are flying that the Emperor and his enforcer, Darth Vader, are dead. A new government is forming to replace the Empire. But the galaxy is a big place, and the fallout of this cataclysm will affect different worlds in different ways. Does everyone accept the fall of Imperial rule? Has everyone even heard the life-altering news? What rushes in to fill the vacuum the Empire has left? And who will try to stop them? . . . our first canon glimpse into the state of the galaxy after the Battle of Endor.
The concept of Thrawn and Truce at Bakura may remain intact but I don't think the details will. Which effectively removes them as any form of canon.
I think I'm alone in disliking a majority of EU novels .. particularly Zahn's work. I enjoyed Stackpole's X-Wing series but that is really all.
Possibly because the EU universe didn't adhere to my idea of the SW universe.
I don't want to be Johnny Negative Soggy Pants but if you only have limited opportunity to read .. there is much better sci fi / fantasy out there than the SW novels.
Utterly disgusting. Not looking forward to the continued destruction of what Star Wars was at all.

Did I miss where Denning and Traviss were writing for Star Wars again?
Legacy of the Force, Fate of the Jedi, and The Force Unleashed did far more damage than tossing things out. At least the stuff coming out is pretty good for the most part.

Disney is making me cry, destroying everything I love ;_;
We don't need to know what happens after Endor, we already fricking know!

Why do you hate Dennings so much, he's a good writer??
I have no opinion about TFU, and I haven't read FotJ, but LotF is probably one of my favorites.

The X-Wing series is conspicuous by its absence. Shame on you.

I loved Star by Star. But the Swarm War was really odd, more of a set up and attempt to "fix" how the NJO ended. Legacy of the Force was clearly a mess, as Traviss and Denning clearly did not agree on the story and characterizations. And all I can say about Fate of the Jedi, is that I couldn't finish it and pretty much killed my interest in the EU.
I only read Zahn's novels (or at least the well known three, are there more?) and I did not like them either. Thing is that I was never able to explain what story is about, I just felt the characters were running and flying around without a clear aim.I think I'm alone in disliking a majority of EU novels .. particularly Zahn's work. I enjoyed Stackpole's X-Wing series but that is really all.
I read the Thrawn trilogy when it came out. I was just out of high school or just in college when the first came out. I read and thoroughly enjoyed them, at the time.
I went back and re-read them (and SotE) just recently and was quite surprised by just how lazy and derivative they all are. I understand trying to stay true to the original characters, but half of their dialogue felt like a bland remix of the expected, and the other half was just... full of NotGood.
The best thing in FotJ was Vestara Khai.
The worst thing in LotF and FotJ? That can be summed up in this: which is pretty accurate to the mental image I got when reading it.
Now the good news is Disney can cherry pick from the successful and failed plot lines to forge a new story
From anyone who has read Tarkin, how was the Empire portrayed? Was it the unreasonably evil empire? or were they still ruthless, but arguably justified?
My biggest hope for the news episodes is that the "We are the evil empire for no real reason" mantra dies
