Are conversions legal for Skirmish?

By Joker Two, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Has anyone heard if conversions are/will be legal for Skirmish gameplay? The Tournament Rules say that the miniatures can be painted and that proxies aren't allowed, but I haven't seen anything about physical alterations to the official models themselves.

The modeling aspect of wargaming is as much a draw as the gameplay itself, and I'm really looking forward to the chance to work with quality Star Wars miniatures, but I'd like to know how far I can go before I start.

I suspect most of what I'm planning would be well-received by local TOs, but I'm curious if anyone knows of any official FFG statements on the subject.

I don't believe there is an official stance on this. I know, as you say, proxies are not allowed. I'd be inclined to say conversions are but its worth trying to contact FFG about.

I can ask this weekend at the FFG tourney.

This would be new ground for FFG I imagine. Has their been a ruling on re-paints in X-Wing?

Yes, repaints are allowed in X-wing. Conversions are not.

I'd expect the ruling to follow the X-Wing ruling. Simply because they cannot make a rule that covers every possible scenario - sure you may do something small like toss a different blaster into Luke's hand... but then the next guy mods a royal guard champion to look like a stormtrooper, in hopes that you mistake one for the other...

So they'd have no choice but to do a blanket ruling saying mods aren't allowed. That's my guess.

are the tokens provided in the coreset proxies for miniatures?

As per the official tournament rules, the tokens are not considered valid miniatures.

They're running one this weekend at the event center? I'm local, so I'll come play and ask myself if they are.

This is too soon though! I only got my core today; I'll have to play with... *unpainted minis* . :o

Nope it's in Chicago at Adepticon ;)

Oh. I am disappointed, because I won't be able to play, but I am also relieved, because I won't have to play with naked miniatures.

If you get a chance to ask the TOs, please let me know what they say. Mostly it would just be extra kit on the Stormtroopers and alien faces on some of the Rebel Fleet Troopers. All sculpting putty, no components from other game lines, and the original models would be easily distinguishable. Maybe swap a Stormtrooper for one of the Scouts manning the E-Webs.

I would ask the TO. But i would be willing to bet that minor conversions (such as arm / leg / weapon repositions) or adding small bits like and extra shoulder plate to a stormtrooper would probably be OK.

But again, it's up to the TO.

I'd expect the ruling to follow the X-Wing ruling. Or they could just give a guideline, like "altered figures must still be easily identifiable," and that the TO has final say on this. Many wargame events do this. It's really not hard, and it works well most times.

How about bases? To get fine scenic base you have to cut figure off first.

Just to update everyone on this, KennedyHawk was able to talk to a TO. Here's what he told me;

I talked to the guy running the tourney. He said as long as you are using the FFG figure and making mods you are okay. It's more to protect from Disney or Lucasfilm getting bent out of shape by someone mixxing WOTC and FFG miniatures.

I showed him my painted guys he said thats fine. I then asked him if I would be able to re-base vader onto something cooler looking like Sorastro's videos, he said no problem.

My final question was on posing. I asked if I could heat vader up or use some knife work to give him a more menacing pose. No problem.

Basically I was told short of cutting the FFG mini off and gluing on one from another company I was fine.
