Wave 2 announced

By jimbobiii, in Star Wars: Armada

See that is the problem with leaks from shows like these. We get a little info and everyone goes wild and FFG won't answer the questions becuase it is not publicly official yet. So we will have to wait for the Official announcement which might be weeks to clear up the non-believers. (or at least those holding on to all hope there will be SSD's just like X-Wing players holding on to hope the will be ISD's in X-Wing.

If an SSD does come out can I (politely) shove it in you face?

I think everyone is reading too much into the bases that are shown with the ships in the pictures. The models themselves were clearly rushed to make it available to show at GAMA. The models are not even painted yet. They have also not had to make any of the large bases yet for anything coming out in the core set or wave 1.

It seems plausible to me that even if the bases being shown with the ships are medium bases, that is because while rushing prototypes of those ships was a priority, it would not be nearly as important to make sure that a large base was available as well, assuming that is what size the ISD and MC80 will be. Just take whatever stands are available to make it look good in the display. The actual bases can come later.

This pretty much throws the 300 point limit out the door for me.

I probably won't run a game with less than 1000 points once I get my hands on a few of these.

So I get where your coming from, but a 300pt game is supposed to last like 2 hours so a 1000 pt game is going to last at LEAST twice as long so 4-6 hours every time you play?

Just saying...

I play heavy wargames that last 8-14 hrs. A longer game is my destiny.

Well they really are only on medium bases, but both the ISD/MonCal could use the extra 3 1/2 inches considering how much they stick out.

But I'm glad they went the direction they did for this wave let alone the time table for the release date. I really don't see a bad option except maybe swapping out the scum fighters (love em btw) with Es Zs Phantoms Defenders. Maybe they will come in the next wave tho :D

Until then, I will admire the fine workmanship of FFGs wave 2 creations cause **** they are sexy XD

If an SSD comes out for Armada, I'll buy it, top it with gravy, and eat the SOB.

I imagine it doesn't taste good...

:D

There may be a larger ship than the ISD coming but it won't be a SSD as we know it, it will be much smaller classed ship. (X-Wing never got an ISD like soooooo many wanted but they got an Epic ship, but it was a whole different bird than an ISD.)

If you can lift it!

I think having a ISD in x wing is a whole different ball game than a SSD in armada. With the loose sliding scale of armada its much more likely we could see a SSD than trying to fit a ISD into the fixed scale of x wing.

Don't worry it's in space so it's weightless :)

Why does every topic on here always seem to eventually get to the will there be an SSD in armada argument?

Because some people want SSDs and other people don't.

They are awesome ships, but putting them in Armada wouldn't do them justice. An SSD like the Executor is worth at least 10 ISDs, that is at least 1000 points right there. Unless they drastically scale down its capability or if you want a game that lasts about 24 hours (2k+ points) I don't think we'll be seeing an SSD.

Now what we might see is one of the smaller SSD's, something in between the ISD and the Executor, like an Allegiance-class or Aramada-class.

Even the Arc Hammer is almost 10km long, which is the length of ~9 ISDs end-to-end.

But anyway....

Yes you can, and I'll eat two! :D

That's a good point actually. They could very well invent their own Huge Ships for Armada, like they did the Riader for X-Wing.

I do think the Executor is probably pushing it. Even if the sliding scale made it only four times the length of the ISD instead of nine, think of the width!

I'm actually glad these pics surfaced. It really puts to rest, in mind, that the SSD will not be in Armada, unless they come up with an "epic" base size. I'm really ok with that now that we are getting a really well scaled ISD.

If they did release an SSD I would not buy it. It would be too large to do amything with except deploy, hammer on the Rebs, then crash into the Death Star you built in the back yard. That, or it would be too small and look funny on the table with the ISDs.

It's not FFG's fault, blame Lucas for dreaming up these leviathans. George obviously had no regard for gamers when he made his movies. So selfish.

Don't worry it's in space so it's weightless :)

Technically, surely that's /almost/ weightless, since the affect of gravity decreases exponentially and can therefore never reach zero?

In the middle between two poles of gravity it can be just zero. Its an unstable equilibrium though.

I do agree with your point assessment some what. You have to remember if you increase the length even four times its volume increase much much much more. Its points would most likely be higher than a 1000.

Now hold on there, I Love SSD. I just realize in a game like this you could not have one and do it justice. I can't stress enough how I would love one on my shelf buy again that class of ship is just Huge! You couldn't scale it down right to fit on a table and still call it a SSD, it would look funny.

Oh indeed, I went with a very optimistic, best-case, point-of-view to show it isn't likely we will get an Executor. I love SSD's and would absolutely love getting one in Armada, the only problem is the only ones that fit are the Allegiance, which is essentially a bigger ISD, and other similar sized ships. They wouldn't actually add much to the game imo as they are simply larger Imperials. The Executor would be amazing to see on the table, but the problem is it would be the table.

I just want to run an epic 700+ pt game with an ISD, some Vics and various support. It would be truly epic.

I thought we were going to have a physics argument... oh well.

Oh topic, the new ships look amazing! I'm actually excited to see if I can get away with a raider swarm! And the ISD is beautiful, even unpainted!

I really don't think we'll see a SSD in this game, though if they just made a collectors model that was ENORMOUS and sold it for people to just put on a shelf, I'd be interested.

Any comparison pics with Victory and ISD?

Any comparison pics with Victory and ISD?

there is one in the mc80 isd unpainted thread a few down

i also like the raider very much. curious about it stats. i hope its the fast black dice shotgun but from the little fluff i did read i think it has loads of ion cannons.

whoa just look at those hands. they must be HUGE!

You may be right, but let me give some reasons why you might not be:

  • Just because an SSD is roughly 12x the length (according to the canon as of 2004), and ~10x the number of cannons, of an ISD, does not mean that it is worth 10 ISDs. There are drawbacks to having all the eggs in one basket, and I'm sure that it's maneuverability would be ... limited.
  • I don't know what scaling constant FFG's 'relative scale' has, but I don't see a 2-3'-long ship as completely out of the question for a game that uses a 3x6 battle space, especially if we presume that it can't move worth a darn to begin with.
  • Also, it would be an awesome model that quite a number of people would buy even if it did not provide the best gaming experience. Awesome model x nerdgasming fans = profit!

At any rate, I think an SSD is more plausible in Armada than an ISD was in X-Wing. I don't know if its plausible enough to make it realistic. I just suppose we'll have to see how well Armada performs in the marketplace.

If they released one that was even 2' long I still don't see how you could deploy one on a 3'x6' table unless it was at the long end of the board. There would be no real tactics for the player... just blast everything you can before you get shot to death in the rear arch. I love the SSD in the movies... not so much for Armada.
