Lords of Nal Hutta - Aren`t Hutts Hemaphroditic anymore?

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

It might be important depending on what happens in your game.

I wish I did not have an example.

The introductory adventure "Dead in the Water" from the Age of the Rebellion GM's Kit includes a Female Hutt who runs the spacestation the players can go to.

In the section of the adventure called "Romancing The Hut" if you "Negotiate" with her using a "Charm" check "Shoola negotiates various romantic encounters for her assistance".

A player in the game I am in went there during negotiations with a little bit to much description in his roleplay.

That is one story he will never outlive.

No one can remeber his characters actual name because they only remember the explicit nickname his character gained from this incident.

So it's like riding a moped...a moped beanbag chair on it.

They have two genders now? That sucks!:-/ ... Well in my game they don`t. Canon shmanon, why do we need it?

Technically they always had two genders; they just have two sexes now. :P

Each individual Hutt had two genders I guess.... Anywhooo, it kind of bothers me when they make weird and iteresting aliens more human and less interesting! Stop making my aliens more human! What`s next? Wookies can talk?...

Considering that the TV-series is aimed at children, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a Wookiee that speaks basic sometime in the future...

Still, the stories and characters are very well written. Rebels is a good show.

For a kids show, I guess.

I'm personally having trouble watching it because I'm constantly being reminded that it's a kids show by some of the narrative choices and characters actions.

Well that depends on the level of interaction they have with the main characters.

So far the interaction has been pretty limited.

There have been instances in TCW where species that previously couldn't speak basic has been changed to speak basic because of narrative reasons.

Trandoshans come to mind, but I'm sure there's more.

Some species often choose not to speak basic, like rodians, some can`t at all.

Rebels is a good show, even if it is aimed towards kids or not. There are loads of kid shows these days that have at least as good, or even better, writing and direction than a lot of shows for grown ups.

A lot of kids shows these days are meant for the enjoyments of both kids and adults and it shows. We are fortunate to experience a period in time where good writing and taking art serious actually pays.

When I was a kid, alot, maybe the majority, of shows for childeren were made to sell toys.. Still some of them turned out ok or even good, but not at the level they are today!

There is an obvious difference between Trandoshans and Wookies. The former have not talked at all in anything related to the movies while Wookies have. To reiterate, Wookies have appeared in TCW and Rebels and did not speak Basic at all. And there was actually enough dialogue interaction with the protagonists in both shows, so I fail to see where you are coming from in that regard.

It could happen, of course, but it would be surprising to me given the fact that Wookies have been shown not speaking Basic in Rebels already (and in TCW and in the movies and so on). You are of course free to be completely unsurprised if it happens.

Bossk would disagree... He spoke in ESB.

Well, I was giving my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if they speak down the road.

I'd add that I distinctly remember that the description of the Trandoshians in the old star wars rpg (the west end games one) stated that they didn't speak basic. But then I had the Swedish version, so I can't say if that's what it said in the English one (since some of the stuff was changed)

I'm not arguing if it's a good kids show or not.

I'm just saying that it is painfully obvious at times that it is geared towards kids.

Something that not everyone will mind, of course, but personally I am struggling with it.

And none of my friends (who are huge star wars fans) can get over it, so they've stopped watching after a few episodes. Just like they (and I) did with TCW.

Bossk would disagree... He spoke in ESB.

Indeed he does. I distinctly remembered it only being a kind of hissing, and I actually watched all six episodes only a couple of weeks ago ... funny how your memory sometimes fails you.

So Bossk can talk. He didn`t hear him speak basic, but nothing says he or other trandoshans can`t speak basic. Greedo spoke rodian to Han, but with the vocal sounds he make, he and other rodians could still be able to speak basic.

Wookiees on the other hand, make sounds that indicate that basic is impossible for them because of their mouths and/or vocal cords. Could they have a device that translates what they say to basic? Sure, I`ll get the technician on it right away!..

I was simply replying to this: "The former have not talked at all in anything related to the movies while Wookies have"

And I'm 99% sure that the older RPG material (predating Wookieepedia) stated that Trandoshans don't speak basic. This was all in discussion about how certain races now speak basic because of TCW/Rebels, that previously didn't.

Also, I'd postulate that the sounds Wookiees make and the sounds Trandoshans make (or at least Bossk in the movies) are equally guttoral and non articulate to warrant them not being able to speak basic (including the shape and build of Bossk's mouth in the movies)

PS. it doesn't say anywhere in the Movies or TV-shows that Wookiees can't speak basic either... (although, apparantly it is said that they don't in "sabines sketchbook", whatever that is...)

It’s called Em-Two-Dee. ;)

Bossk has been speaking Basic at least since the 90s in the EU - read the Bounty Hunter Wars - so neither TCW nor Rebels has anything to do with Trandoshans speaking Basic. The only entry about Trandoshans from WEG I know (Movie Trilogy Sourcebook Special Edition) says nothing about them being unable to speak Basic, either, in contrast to the rules about Wookies.

I don't recall anything ever saying that Trandoshans were incapable of speaking Basic. They have their own language, sure, and Bossk speaks it in the ESB for what is likely a rather...colorful comeback to Admiral Piett's insulting remark.

Alien languages are great for swearing!

But The Clone Wars is hardly the first place where Trandoshans have spoken Basic. And TCW having them speak it doesn't change anything canonically...it just means it's the first instance we have in Star Wars canon where a Trandoshan speaks Basic.

Have you gone back to check out TCW? Huge SW fan here. I couldn't watch TCW. I honestly thought it was awful at the time. I made it to episode 4 and couldn't stand it anymore. I tuned back in for episode 8 as I was flipping through the channels, and signed off for good after that...or so I thought.

About 8 months ago my youngest (2 at the time, 3 now) started showing an interest in all things Star Wars. I decided to watch TCW with him (no way he'd sit through an original trilogy movie). The first season was pretty rough. But it got noticeably better and continued to improve as the seasons continued. Some of the later stuff got pretty deep and mature.

I'm sticking it out with Rebels. I watch it with my kids. At first, it was pretty kid oriented, but towards the end it started to mature a bit. 2nd season looks like it may be a little more mature also. I have hopes that this will grow over time like TCW did. If it wasn't for the kids though, I probably would have quit Rebels pretty early too.

Yeah, when people were hailing the last 3-4 seasons as "very much for adults and not a kids show" I felt I had to go back and look, but I suspect they were just accustomed to the show or something, because it still felt very much like a kids show to me.

Not as much as the first season, but still very much.

Rebels I have actually forced myself to watch, despite it being for kids.

And I admit, I freely started the next episode sometimes when watching, but I never went two entire episodes without being reminded that it was a kids show.

And that's kinda the thing that irks me (and my friends). They didn't have to make it a kids show.

They could have made it for adults, and kids would have enjoyed it anyway.

You don't have to throw in a ton of cursing, bloody violence and sex to make it a proper adult show. You just make it for adults. The thing I really get bothered by when it comes to kids shows (still, even todays shows) is that they pamper to kids. They look down on kids. They assume kids won't understand this or that. They basically dumb it down when they really don't have to.

I work with kids of all ages (6-18) and I've had conversations with 6 year olds about star wars, lord of the rings or even even more adult series and without fail, they get 99% of it. The stuff they do miss out on are usually sexual innuendoes and stuff like that.

You don't have to dumb down the shows for the kids.

Make them for adults and just make sure kids can watch them.

That's basically what SW ep 4 and 5 did.

Ep 4 was pretty harsh, with owen and berus charred corpses, greedo getting murdered by han, the implied torture of leia and so on. And ep 5 sees luke get his hand cut off, han being actually tortured and dealing with some pretty heavy concepts.

And yet kids can watch them. Because they don't go overboard with sex, blood and cursing.

rant over

Does it explicitly state that he is speaking basic?

Because there are plenty of times in the EU when they've just written what aliens say even though they're speaking a different language.

He talks to and with everybody (as do other Trandoshans in both books and comics, by the way, I checked), so either he speaks Basic, or Dosh is surprisingly widespread in the galaxy.

So, Trandoshans are able to speak Basic in WEG's RPG and are shown to speak Basic in older EU material. TCW/Rebels did not change anything in that regard, they are actually faithful to the existing wider canon.

Yeah, but, greedo speaks huttese with Han, and he doesn't bat an eye.

Nobody ever asks what chewie is saying (that I can recall, anyway), everyone just understands him.

The only one I ever see having an actual translator needed is Jabba (and I suspect that's mainly for show) and the Ewoks.

The Kubaz in Ep IV doesn't speak basic when he's talking to the stormtroopers, and they still understand him.

Tons of the Cantina patrons are speaking various languages and there seems to be no trouble understanding them from anyone in the cantina (other than luke).

People seem to understand R2-D2 all the time as well.

It seems that languages are simply "understood" most of the time.

So unless it explicitly states that Bossk is speaking basic in those books, I'd think it's more for the ease of reading than anything else. (especially since he speeks dosh in Ep V)
