No love for Rebels?

By EmpireErik, in Star Wars: Armada

Based on the posts in this forum, there is a lot of love for the Imperials.

A lot of people want certain Imperial ships and crews to be released. However, the posts for Rebel fleets seem to be lacking. Maybe they were not so common in the EU (never read the EU stuff).

Interestingly in the beginning of X-wing, Rebels seemed to get all the love. I guess this is because the way the Star Wars universe was and is presented. Imperial ships spewing nameless fighters against Rebel fighters, and Rebel ships hiding in the back.

But hey, who has love for the Rebels? And what fleets are your looking for?

I am considering a few CR90s Corvettes and maybe a fleet of Nebulon - Bs, but less so the Assault Frigate.

In X-wing I play Imperial, but now with all the love for Imperial, I may have to focus on a Rebel fleet.

This seemed to be different in Germany. Right from the Start people (including me) played Imperials and only a few Rebels where around.

There is a Topic in this Forum where people asked who will play what, or both. I remember there was only a small "advantage" for the Imps.

EDIT: To "kindoff" answer your question about what Rebels i will play: Nill :)

I lean slightly imperial in what I want to play, I just see their ships as more challenging to command effectively (at least until the MKII arrives. That said, I do like the concept of the MKII as a broadsider.

Much as I prefer Rebel fighters the Capital ships dont look as cool as the triangles of death!

Assualt Fish etc...

Rebels can't be public and expose themselves, agents from the IDS are watching. Also the Empire citizens should show their loyalty by vocally supporting the millitary efforts in the Galaxy.

I can't say more without exposing myself but you are not alone. Fulcrum will contact you.

(In all honesty it's about the Star Destroyers for the majority. They are very iconic, beautiful in its simplicity and beastly in its approach. Give it time, players just have to give in to the Darkside a bit.)

I'm all over the mixed fleet rebel tactics, but I'm going to go crazy when Ackbar and his cruiser show up.

Ill get borth fleets i guess but im more interested in rebel gameplay. It seems to be more difficult as you seem to have more options for position, speed and timing. In all games i prefer the rogue/mage type of character who decides when to strike, strikes hard and doesnt have much defensive abilities apart from run away. Usually this initiative is coupled with the property that if you dont use it to your full advantage you will definitively loose. Sometimes this annoys me like i.e. if you are the rogue and can hide and do more damage from hiding you have to use that damage only to be equal up to others who cant hide. Its not that your hiding is a bonus, its a requirement just to catch up to the others. ofc it cant be done any other way in terms of balance.

The imperials VSDs seem to fullfill the tank role atm. Im not sure if it stays that way. I percieve that role as beeing forced to react on what the more nimble opponent is doing. Playing the passive side leads to the fealing that you do not win by your own tactic, but by the opponent failing in his which is ok if you dont wannt to wrench your mind to much at the moment but often not as .. well active or satisfiing. I guess therefore it kinda depends on the current mood.

Interestingly the squadrons seem to perform the opposite way around with the imperials having more speed and the rebels more durability. As that is probably the same in x-wing where mostly fighters are present i predict that players who stay with theire sides from x-wing and play heavily on capital ships in armada might be surprised by the switch in mindset and tactics for theire faction.

Its ofc not clear how each factions profile will develop over wave 2 and thereafter.

As the editor of HNN, I'm obviously going to join in the 'No Love For Rebels' movement. That said, I imagine that rebels will be more fun to play, given their greater maneuverability.

It's interesting how this game is the opposite from X-Wing, where the Empire largely has the smaller and more maneuverable ships, and the number of ships in the Core are reversed. Yet, while the opposite symmetry seems contrived, that's how the lore does have it.

Ever since they announced Armada, I've been looking forward to playing Rebels, because I've been wanting blow-up Star Destroyers since my childhood. That being said, it doesn't surprise me that most of the Armada love has been for the Imperials, Star Destroyers are one of the most iconic ships.

The list I'm the most excited to try out is some variation of a Assault Frigate A flanked by 2 Neb B Escorts and fairly light on squadrons. All the ships have 2 dice vs squadrons so there is no safe route for enemy squads to approach, and the huge side arcs of the Escort frigs is like a giant squad-shotgun. Also if you have the Redemption on one of the frigs and leia organa you got great support power. For offence you can put the Salvation title on the other Escort and Paragon on the Assault Frig. Since these ships all have pretty high command values I'm also thinking that Garm Bel Iblis might be a good commander, giving you a total of 7 tokens to use on the first and fifth round. Then maybe a few A-wings for defense against enemy named squadrons.

I'll end up playing both, but right now Imperials are more interesting to me. I'm also not a big fan of the Assault Frigate so that's a strike against the Rebels right now for me.

Want to know why Imps are getting all the attention?

You'd be hard pressed to find a more iconic/awesome ship short of the Falcon (yes, I know they're ISDs not Victories, but you gotta admit they're pretty close :P)

Yeah we only see Rebel capital ships in action toe-to-toe with the Imperials one time in the movies IIRC: the attack on the second Death Star. The other times we see them it's a brief glimpse while they're running the hell away - the CR90 in ANH, the Neb B and transports in Empire, etc. Star Destroyers, meanwhile, are all up in the Rebel's business throughout all the movies, so it's no surprise they have a larger hold in the imagination. Re: X-Wing -- The Rebel fighters are a different story. Each one with a unique design, pilots we see and care about, the underdogs on a suicide run, while the Imperial fighters (in the movies) are faceless, identical, and seemingly cannon fodder. The fighters are the real cinematic face of the Rebellion, while the Star Destroyers represent the Imperials.

and now the actual ISD has been announced for Wave 2, so FFG knows its **** market :P

Rebels do get the not-so-classic-but-still-recognizable mon calamari cruiser, though

I for one am intimidated to paint those Reb fighters. Older = crummier vision. Making the swarms of X-wings look different will be a challenge. The wing markings may be beyond me.

The Imps? Black Primer, dry-brush grey, black ink wash, & touch up highlights. If that gets too boring, throw in some red Tie Interceptors.

So -- basically -- my Imps will likely look more intimidating, and better painted.

I am already printing some rebel logos for my capital ships. Lots of Rebel love here. 3 Corvettes, 3 Neb-Bs, 3 Assault Frigates and 4 packs of fighters. Also playing imps too. I feel having one faction only leaves me wanting if I don't have a regular opponent. Best to have both!

I will most definitely go rebel. I have always been a fan of mixed fleets that work well together. I'm a big fan of carrier groups too so I plan to do some fighter heavy fleets. I might go for a red, black, and yellow scheme. Don't know yet...

Obviously because Rebels are scum......

I think I've loved the Imperial side of the fight for the crisp uniforms, mass-produced mitliary equipment, and standardized look. The Rebels are very rag-tag in their armada and the scrappy disorganization doesn't seem to appeal to me as much.

That said thiere is something to playing the scrappy underdog and doing something fun.

I like both for different reasons but for now the Rebels get my loyalty. (I am buying both and playing them to see which style I like and to figure out the game more. But for fluff the look of the Imperials are nice but the Rebels have all the class.)

Also Mikael lives in my area and someone has to undermine his Holonet propaganda.

Fulcrum Lives! For The Rebublic!

I'll someday make an Imperial fleet but for now I'm rebels all the way. Just like how I play as Rebels over Imperials most of the time in any Star Wars PC strategy games that involve capital ships For a very simple reason. I prefer small or midsized capital ships over the big ones and the Rebels typically have more of those, I still use some of the big ones but they are usually outnumbered at least 10 to 1 by the smaller capital ships in my Empire at War and Rebellion Alliance squadrons. And I actually like ragtag fleets and fighter wings going for a ragtag feel whenever reasonable in games.

Speaking for myself, I have just always found the Empire much cooler. They look more menacing for starters, which is a good start for looking cool on the battlefield. It is also very hard not to love a ship that is called a Star Destroyer.

Above all though, I am a Sith at heart - even in X-wing I have always played Empire, and when reading the EU I was always rooting for the doomed Imperials

Well I am surrounded by Imperials here. I plan on bringing down a few Star Destroyers with my Y-wings just to show a classic can still do its job..

Well get them. :)
