Wishlist item for the Imperial Raider expansion, to improve a few problematic ships

By xanderf, in X-Wing

Borrowing a concept from the 'Star Trek' sibling game, and including it here as this will be one of the few chances it would even be possible to include as it needs a new part of a particular size...

Ion Overdrive Engines

Modification

When you reveal a '5' [straight] maneuver, you may instead choose to use the '6' [straight] maneuver template.

Cost: 2

Why the Raider? Because a '6 straight' template is obviously going to be too long to include anywhere else. Also, the TIE Advanced that comes with that ship would be one of the craft that could benefit from that.

I think the cost makes sense, as it is comparable to the 'boost' upgrade in that it can extend a significant jump forward, with the exceptions that:

- It moves you half as far forward from a 5-straight as a 5-straight-plus-boost would do

- It locks you into going straight forward, as opposed to the far more useful bank at the end which a boost allows for

...probably justifying a cost of only a single point. On the OTHER hand, of course...it isn't an action, so that counter-balances the above points and increases the value back up a bit.

What fighters benefit?

  • TIE Fighter
  • TIE Interceptor
  • TIE Advanced
  • TIE Defender
  • A-Wing
  • E-Wing

IMHO, it's a slight enough benefit that it would not particularly break anything...particularly given how desperately most of the above fighters want to put something else in the 'modification' slot. But it would certainly improve the feeling of speed that the above fighters are supposed to have...and...at the moment...don't quite manage.

Will it happen? Doubt it - I think we've seen enough of the Raider expansion's contents to know it can't possibly be in the pack. After all, it would take a new range ruler as WELL as a few new upgrade cards, so...probably not.

Still, would be cool to see at some point.

What? No. How does that help anyone?? ><

Much rather see:

Cargo - 2: Increase your energy limit by +1. Help Tantive

There is no '6' movement template... and it does no real good.

Even if a '6' move forward happened (a big no for me - engine upgrade is fine in that area) it would probably make TIE swarms too powerful jousters. Punch forward at full speed and get a high chance of shots in round 1 against your opponent. While head-on jousting is a viable strategy I don't think it should be allowed a 'boost' like that. Improving it too much would remove some of the elegant thoughtful elements. We already have to deal with turrets...

I'd much sooner expect to see the following (as it fits with certain ships and does not require extra templates):

SLAM drive

Modification (possibly gunship or imperial only)

Instead of performing an attack you may boost using the 3 <bank / straight> templates.

I expect more upgrades with alternate costs such as gaining an ion token (which they've hinted at) or foregoing your attack (such as Feedback Array).

You don't need a new template, a six is just a five and a one stuck together. The Core Set gives you the parts to do everything up to a fifteen straight if you so choose.

Or, 4 + boost = 6 straight....

You know what my wish list is? The money to buy the dang thing.

IF I was to want anything it would be a modification to the rules on energy allowing you to generate about 50% more of it per turn.

Considering how rarely I use the 5 straight I don't see the appeal of a 6 straight. Especially For 2 points. Also I don't think anyone needs more templates (especially those who use acrylic templates). I also don't see what this fixes - I've never thought "these ships would be better if they could go further"....

I'd love to see an Imperial crew that grants an EPT upgrade to PS 4 or higher. Give the Named shuttles an EPT and Krassis too!

Advanced Sensor Barrel roll then Green Maneuver. Rinse and Repeat.

Wouldn't that benefit their opponents just as much, since most (all?) of them will have higher PS and move after your Academy TIEs, thus allowing them to TL for shots on Turn 2 (in which they also focus) or move to engagement range, Focus and fire on Turn 1? Where is the benefit to the TIE swarm? Am I just missing it?

You might have missed this thread.

"Raider upgrade card identification"

...which I noted in the OP, if you'd read it.

It helps the ships that attempt to 'outrun' the enemy (which, granted, is not really a TIE Fighter - but certainly the TIE Defender and E-Wing...*cough* Corran *cough*).

The difference between a '5' and a '6' is that with a '5', if the enemy is in contact with your back, no straight maneuver will get them out of range 1 or 2. With a '6', if the enemy plots a '1', you manage to actually GET to range 3. (I rather expect that ability to push out to range 3 more consistently will manage to bump the Stealth Device out of favor as the Royal Guard's preferred pairing with Autothrusters - while AT definitely helps the Interceptors A LOT, our recent post-scum-store-championships have seemed to indicate that it's still not quite enough. Very close, though, and this proposal makes for a very small change.)
