I was at a store championship at Common Ground Games in Stirling the other day and wanted to put my experiences with scum out there. There was something in the region of 35 players and a decent variety of lists and it was a really well run event at an awesome venue!
My list was scum and consisted of:
Boba Fett - Vet Instincts, K4 Security Droid, Engine Upgrade, Slave 1 and Flechette Torps - 50
Syndicate Thug - Ion Turret, BTL-A4, R4 Agromech - 25
Syndicate Thug - Ion Turret, BTL-A4, R4 Agromech - 25
Coming in at 100 squad points on the nose. I'd not tried this exact list before the event as I'd been playing around with Kath one y wing and a couple of Z's so I wasn't super confident but I was worried that kath would never catch a phantom so Boba is was!
Anyway on with the games...
Game 1 against Drew
His list was
Wedge with outmaneuver and R3-A2
Luke with push the limit and R2-D2
Biggs (can't remember what upgrades)
So I started my Y-wings heading just to the right of a centrally placed asteroid with boba heading up on the left of the same rock and he set his x wings in the top right (my right) we headed toward each other with Boba outpacing the y's and then boosting right. Turn two saw some shots from the thugs who had banked in but little damage was inflicted due to range 3. The next round the x wings sharp turned in apart from Biggs who kept heading to my board edge and my thugs and Boba all went after Biggs. One of my thugs took serious damage and my squad put the hurt on Biggs in return taking him out due to some poor green dice. The thugs then k turned and did some damage to luke while boba took wedge on. I lost one of the thugs in the next few rounds and easily mopped up the other two x wings mostly due to some really bad defence rolls.
This left me 1-0 with a 100-25 win
Game 2 against Tim
This time I was up against a similar boba to my own but with Z's instead of Y's
Boba Fett - VI, Engine, Gunner
N'Dru Sulak - Lone Wolf, Cluster Missiles
2x Binare Pirate - Feedback Array
We were both at 100 so we flipped for initiative which I won and chose to give away so I could move my boba after his
He set up his PS 1 Z's top left facing right so I put my thugs bottom right, he the put N'Dru opposite my thugs and boba behind his pirates and my boba went down with my thugs. I raced forward to try and take out N'Dru, who was coming straight at me, before his support arrived and managed to finish him off with boba in the second round of combat as my thugs turned in to face the rest of his force. After a big furball in the top right quarter of the table he'd blocked my boba onto a rock and taken out a y wing. I then took out a Z and he killed my other y wing leaving the score at 37-50 in his favour the rest of the game was my boba chasing his boba and when time was called his boba was at 1 hull and I had no shot much to my frustration ><
Now I was 1-1 with a 50-37 loss
Game 3 was against my friend Calum that I'd travelled with so we I knew what his list was capable of and it was not something I wanted to face but figured I probably would at some point. He had:
Whisper - VI, ACD, FCS
5 Academy TIEs
He set up top left so I went in the opposite corner with Boba on the outside. In the second turn, after a boost, Boba had whisper at range 3 and stripped both shields while whisper took a shot at a thug and rolled 4 blanks, off to a good start. He then proceeded to throw the tie swarm at me while whisper evaded Boba and a few turns later I had killed two ties and lost both y wings and things weren't looking great. However he then put whisper right behind where I knew Boba was going to be with a barrel roll hoping to be out of arc, he wasn't and four shots from Boba took a still cloaked whisper off the board. The score was now 63-50 in my favour and Boba had very little hull remaining so I played run away from the scary tie fighters for a few turns until time ran out.
I was now 2-1 with a 63-50 win and on the plus side for my mate he didn't beat me so he still had a ride home ![]()
Game 4 saw me up against David (I think) who was running:
Keyan Farlander - expose and experimental interface
2x Tala Squaron Pilots
3x Bandit Squadron Pilots
We flipped for initiative and he won and took it. He then set up top right with his bandits so I went bottom left with my thugs to drag him through the rocks. He then put his talas down centrally which I wasn't expecting and Keyan down between the two lots of headhunters leaving him in a long line across the board and I put Boba down on the left board edge. Again I raced my y wings 3 forward and Boba 4 with a boost to get in before he could bring the swarm to bear. I ended up killing a tala and ioning Keyan and the other tala in the first few rounds of combat. He sent everything at my thugs in the rocks while boba slipped round the back. Boba took out Keyan and a couple more Z's dies in exchange for one of my y-wings and after taking him down to one Tala he called it and I had my 3rd win
This left me 3-1 with a 100-25 win and I knew I'd need to win my next game to make top 8
Game 5 was against Edwin running a really interesting list of:
Chiraneau - Determination, Weapons Engineer, Moff Jerjerod and an Intel agent
Colonel Vessery - VI, HLC and Engine
I spread my asteroids out a little more this time with him only having two ships and I deployed bottom right and he went top left. We basically just jousted through the rocks and I took the shields off the defender and a couple of shields off the Decimator in exchange for a few hits on my thugs. We then k turned around while the Decimator turned off followed by boba and I managed to ion the defender who was facing an asteroid and now on two hull. Boba did some damage to the Decimator and took a little in return. Next turn I lined both y wings up to finish the ioned defender while boba keeps chasing the deci and Vessery hits the rock and takes a direct hit leaving my thugs with no target! After that it was just a matter of hunting down chiraneau although both thugs went down along the way.
A 100-50 win leaves me 4-1 and puts me 4th for the top 8 cut, awesome!
Game 6 was against Tim, my only loss from earlier! I'm not too worried though as it was a really close game last time but only time will tell.
As a reminder he had
Boba - VI, EU, Gunner
N'Dru - cluster missiles, lone wolf
2x PS 1 headhunters - feedback array
He won initiative this time and chose to take it (I would have given it to him if I'd won anyway) so he starts the same as last time with his Z's top left facing right so I mix things up and go bottom left facing him with my thugs. Seeing this he puts N'Dru a few ship lengths behind his Z's facing me and his boba goes right in behind the Z's facing right. My boba goes down with my thugs as usual and we start. I move up quickly and he hard turns his Z's and boba in and N'Dru wanders forward. Turn two sees a few pot shots but no major damage. I don't manage to finish N'Dru before he fires his cluster missiles this time but he's too close to boba and gets neither his extra attack dice or his reroll and only takes one shield off my boba! Again we end up trading a thug for N'Dru and then a headhunter for my other thug leaving us in an eerily similar place as last game at 50 points to 37 in his favour. This time however I manage to gun down his boba leaving my boba on three hull and his Binare pilot one one hull. Form there the outcome is pretty inevitable and I win 100-50 and move on to face the top ranked player
Game 7 against No. 1 ranked Rab and he is running another whisper swarm with:
Whisper - ACD, VI, FCS and Rebel captive
Howlrunner - Swarm Tactics
3x Academies
We start off in opposite corners and go for the joust thought the asteroids. I know I'm in trouble when whisper is just in range of a y wing and out of boba's range. This becomes a theme and one thug goes down pretty quick followed by a few ties. At some point boba took a stunned pilot crit (damage for bumping). Boba manages to hit an uncloaked, unfocused whisper with a three hit Flechette torp and I begin to see a way out until he rolls three natural evades (it's through a rock
). At this point I've got rid of all the academies, whisper goes after the thug and howl k turns right behind boba. Boba reveals a 2 turn whip I'm pretty sure will bump whisper, damaging me and leaving me with no shot so I use the inertial dampeners (first time all day) and stop.
Two hits, two crits later with 3 blank evades Howlrunner is space dust and whisper ices the y wing. Boba V Whisper. Unfortunately boba is pretty damaged and whisper is untouched and after a few rounds boba's down to one hull and whispers lost a shield. We play out the last turn and whisper easily kills boba. Then I learn that time had run out halfway through that round and if I'd survived if have won on points. Alas it was not to be
Anyway I'm pretty happy with my performance throughout the day and I get to leave with some shiny new focus tokens.
Some things I took away from this are:
Even with Boba's rerolls the free target lock from the k4 droid is awesome.
Double tap y wings are great and the r4 Agromech tuning a spent focus into a target lock has incredible synergy with said y wings.
A well flown whisper can dodge even a PS 10 Boba with engine if it wants to especially when it has a mini swarm to throw in the way!
Thanks for taking the time to read this folks and I hope it can be of some use to any scum players out there and anyone else for that matter!
