Expecting Gama Trade Show Announcement?

By Killerardvark, in X-Wing

Where is this assumption that Wave 7 is going to be Episode 7 stuff coming from, or that we're going to get new trilogy stuff in X-wing at all? Lets put aside whether the new movies take place in the Galactic Civil War era it's been stated firmly X-wing is to be set in, look at the pool of ships we have now. 8 of 21 standard format ships(HWK, E-wing, Defender, Phantom, Decimator, Star Viper, Aggressor, Syck) are Legends content, and a 9th, the YT-2400, is only canon via a several second cameo in the Special Editions of Episode IV. How many of the pilots and crew are likewise at this point? Corran, Isaard, Mara Jade, Ibtisam, Horton Salm, Soontir and all of the TIE Interceptor pilots...the list goes on and on.

Obviously FFG is going to be releasing Episode VII related stuff, but I don't know that there's any guarantee we'll be seeing Episode VII in X-wing at all. The E-wing is already a bit of a stretch on the time frame, and then you start getting into all sorts of alternate timeline weirdness. But hey, I could be entirely wrong. At the very least though I highly doubt we're not seeing anything on Wave 7 because it's tied to Episode VII, if only because I strongly doubt we'll be seeing zero releases post-Raider for FFG's best selling product line until December when we've already been told Wave 7 is in the can and Wave 8 is in testing.

Look on the bright side guys, the Star Destroyer Huge ship fans just got their announcement :P

I'm getting into Armada, so I'm stoked. I hope seeing the H-6 doesn't mean it'll be the next ship we get for the rebellion... Not only is she pre-clone wars, but the H-6 was also a one-off prototype with some limited variation types made. How can you justify a generic with that low of a production run? I'd rather see K-Wings, or the R-41, or T-Wing, than the Scurrg.

But it's ship selection choices like these that make me feel about switching to Armada...

I happened to be at a Bally's today and alas they wouldn't let me in. I promised to sacrifice many Bothans to get the info. I had nothing better to do though so I went ahead and killed them anyway. If I didn't someone else would have.

Sure, but that was back in 2013. Years have passed since that quote, including the announcement of new Star Wars movies that weren't even on the table at the time, and then FFG confirming today that they not only have that license, but WILL BE releasing Episode VII products.

I don't think we have to ask whether that would include X-Wing or not. Given how much that license could have cost them, they'd be insane to not put out Episode VII material in X-Wing, Armada, Imperial Assault, the LCG, the RPG, etc. They pay for it once, they can use it as many times as they want. Why would that be any answer aside from "EVERYWHERE - milk it till it's dry!"?

Given FFG's fairly consistent supply chain delays, and that we already know we are still getting one more X-Wing release this year (the Raider and TIE Advanced), I think it's more likely than not.

Merchandise from Episode VII is going to be hitting store shelves as a tidal wave starting in September - that's only 6 months away. How late are FFG products usually compared to their expected release date? And FFG cannot miss this launch window. (Indeed, it's almost certainly a condition of their license that they MUST NOT. It is likely that Disney includes a caveat in the license along the lines of "if you can't get product to market to support this release and make more money for us, we'll give the [miniatures/RPG/card game] license to someone who can".)

...when we've already been told Wave 7 is in the can and Wave 8 is in testing.

I don't actually think there is a problem/conflict with that.

After all, what about Wedge Antilles (XWM ship and card) has any particular relation to anything seen on-screen in Episode VII? If that pilot was still yet to be released, all Disney has to say is 'Hey, Poe Dameron is going to be the Rebel's best pilot in the new series', and *boom*, Wedge Antilles card renamed to Poe Dameron, and now it's Poe Dameron who is now a skill-9 X-Wing pilot that reduces his opponent's agility by 1.

There are relatively few XWM cards that really tie extremely thematically with the on-screen presence of characters or events. Which lets FFG have a wave well tested and 'in the can' and still do line-item replacements of names just before release, as needed, without it indicating they "aren't testing things".

I would imagine that we got to see the glimpse of the Raider to assure X-wingers that the game is far from dead...Although I will admit that I was looking forward to getting a peek of the bombers that are lingering on the outer rim...The game that should not be named has wave 2 in the wings , will definitely increase the hype for FFG's bombshell...

Where is this picture you guys keep talking about with these unknown ships?

I love how everyone has taken the comment "wave 7 is done and we are now working on wave 8 " to mean it's done. To hear people on here talk they have it setting in a warehouse, like the end of Raiders, waiting to be sent out. I believe that comment means they are through with wave 7 and it's ready to be sent to the printers, not done. If it was sent to the printers tomorrow and shipped to the states when would it be ready for sale? That's pushing that September release date, which is about right on target for all the other toy and game releases prior to a Star Wars movie in the past. Just my thoughts.

the Galactic Civil War era it's been stated firmly X-wing is to be set in,

It was firmly stated that x-wing is firmly set in the galactic civil war and after. Are you contending that The Force Awakens is not set after the GCW? Because otherwise making TFA material is entirely consistent with what they have stated.

There is a new novel set to publish that is the start of what, per new canon, happens between RotJ and TFA. So yeah all of what happens in print from this point as well as the new movies are all prime crop for new X-Wing material.

Alex Davey said on a recent interview that they will use any ships management and LFL approves off he also said some prequel ships like the Arc-170 would make sense. Basically as the game grows they have to get ships from somewhere. He also said they were more flexible with ships and characters because X-wing is "not a narrative game" and they were not confirming or denying any cannon.

Now look at imperial assault they had to change the name of the royal guard champion most likely because it is a narrative game and the mouse house probably didn't want to reference the crimson empire or anything else that might conflict with the new movies storyline.

Announcement wise as far as Gama goes its a trade show for industry and they only had a few hours to talk so they chose to focus on their new games. Folks saying there's going to be a big slowdown in X-wing (A game that's said to be 33% of FFG business) because of Armada (a game FFG has acknowledged will probably not be as big as X-wing as its a more involved strategic game) is crying that the sky is falling.

The big announcement is the extending of the license and the specifying the inclusion of the new movies. This is mostly for the industry making sure retailer people know that they have their talons into the license so they know that FFG's starwars games have a strong future and the stores can count on these profits.

Now picture you run a game store and your making a nice little earning off selling these FFG starwars games with all the build up and hype of the new movies ( and you know there's going to be a big marketing blitz ) imagine the slap in the face if FFG went to these stores and said "You know what, since our game focuses on Galactic Civil War were not doing anything from these new movies that kids will be begging their parents for. Your store don't need them profits or exposure from being associated with the Star Wars Episode 7 brand..."

I don't think wave 7 will be episode 7 stuff as their been talking about the empire bounty hunters for months now. But maybe wave 8,9 or 10? Maybe?
