Yet Another Double Aggressor SC Report

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Fantasium Comics Store Championship, 3/15/15

28 player turnout

Of note, this one was gloriously Scum-heavy. Two other double IG lists, as well as a lot of Warthogs and one tremendous list using Torkil Mux and three Black Sun Enforcers in Starvipers.

My list:

IG-88B (36)
Push the Limit (3)
Fire-Control System (2)
"Mangler" Cannon (4)
"Hot Shot" Blaster (3)
Autothrusters (2)
IG-2000 (0)
IG-88C (36)
Adrenaline Rush (1)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Inertial Dampeners (1)
Autothrusters (2)
IG-2000 (0)
Total: 100
I wanted to try and build to each IG's strengths rather than go for a symmetrical build. B tends to draw a lot of hate, so PTL gives him the ability to focus and evade frequently. C made use of Advanced Sensors and Adrenaline Rush to make sure he maximized his mobility. Dampeners really only came up once, but for a one-point upgrade, that one time it was used was insanely clutch. Autothrusters is absolutely a must. I don't think I"m exaggerating when I say that it saved at least 8-10 points of damage per game.
1st Match: Joe
Kath Scarlett
- Opportunist
- K4 Security Droid
Palob
- Blaster Turret
- Moldy Crow
Binarye Pirate x2
- Feedback Array
Managed to flank Kath early and hit her with all four hits from the HLC, followed by a Mangler Blast that stuck her with an Injured Pilot. Without Opportunist or her extra rear attack die to help her, Kath wasn't doing too much, and the IGs both quickly took Palob down. Switched attention back to Kath, knocking her out fairly quickly, which just left two Aggressors against a pair of PS1 Pirates. 1-0, 100-0
2nd Match: Ryan
Dash Rendar
- Outrider
- Heavy Laser Cannon
- Kyle Katarn
- Push the Limit
- Engine Upgrade
Keyan Farlander
- Push the Limit
- Advanced Sensors
- Heavy Laser Cannon
This one was a tough matchup. After the initial volleys, C had lost all of his shields, while Keyan was down to one hull. I then got a major break here, as my opponent deliberately tried to barrel roll away and actually put an asteroid in front of him. He flew through the rock, rolled a hit, and promptly blew up. Down to just Dash, Autothrusters came up huge. Between focus and evade tokens, I probably averaged three evade results per hit. I lost C along the way, with his HLC tragically being blown off by a critical hit, but eventually stuck Dash with an Injured Pilot crit that took away his PTL. After corralling him at Range 1, a main gun salvo was able to put him away. 2-0, 100-50
Round 3: Bryant
Dash Rendar
- Outrider
- Heavy Laser Cannon
- Kyle Katarn
- Push the Limit
- Engine Upgrade
Keyan Farlander
- Push the Limit
- Advanced Sensors
- Heavy Laser Cannon
The exact same list I just faced. This one went better, though. Once again, Autothrusters at range 3 did a great job of protecting me, while I was able to quickly knock out Keyan's shields. I was able to use hit and run to wear him down while keeping out of Dash's firing arc and staying at range 3 of Keyan. C's hull was smoking (down to 1 hull left), but I was able put them both down again. 3-0, 100-0
Round 4: Jonathan
2 Blue Squadron Pilots, each with
- E2/B-Wing
- Tactician
Blue Squadron Pilot
- Ion Cannon
Gold Squadron Y-Wing
- BTL-A4
- Ion Turret
- R3A2
Oh dear god, a Panic Attack list! As someone who had spent way too long flying the blasted thing myself, and knowing how bad stress effects were for Aggressors, this one had me really worried. This was the match where all of my Scum tricks really paid off. I scored an early break, tagging one forward-flying Tactican Blue for five shields and a minor crit at the edge of the asteroid belt, while staying at range 3. Second round of shooting, my opponent had hoped to block C into the rocks, but I was able to burn my Dampener to stay exactly where I was. He lost his shields and took two more stress tokens while he and B stripped the shields off the Ion Blue. My opponent thought he had C boxed in for sure after that, with nothing but small bases blocking every move to my left, but I surprised him by Adrenaline Rushing a Segnor's Loop. C finished the damaged Tactician while B got a focused Hot Shot attack for three hits on the Ion Blue. The Y-Wing was able to stick him for two more stress tokens, and the race was on. At one point, C had 9 stress tokens sitting on him, as that blasted double tap kept sticking him with stress. However, he was able to say alive long enough for B to get back in the fight, and he was able to mangle the blasted Y-Wing out of existence. I ultimately lost C trying to get him back in the fight against the Blue, but B managed to get out of it without any significant damage for the win. 4-0, 100-50
At this point, I'm top seed going into eliminations.
Top 8: Peta
Oicunn
- Determination
- Dauntless
- Rebel Captive
- Saboteur
- Jerjerrod
Soontir Fel
- Push the Limit
- Royal Guard TIE
- Stealth Device
- Autothrusters

Academy Pilot

A chance to avenge myself for my Top 4 loss from two weeks ago! I was able to put a lot of damage into Oicunn early, but he managed to box me in quickly. By the time I got clear, Oicunn was down to six hull, while both of my Aggressors were down to a single shield between them. While he tried to regroup and come back around, I was able to get a number of shots at his TIE Fighter, but the blasted thing wouldn't go down. I tried to switch tactics and go back after Oicunn. This proved to be a mis-step. Oicunn responded to the two damage I dealt him with an attack of his own, bringing B down to 3 hull.

With time expiring and still no ships destroyed, he crashed Oicunn into B, bringing me down to 2 hull, while also blocking the move I was hoping to do of my own. Meanwhile, C tried to get around at the fight, knowing that he needed to get all four hits with the HLC to have a hope of saving the win, but landed on a rock instead. My last hope was to mangle Soontir, who had executed a move blasting him into Oicunn's backside for a range 1 shot. Sadly, Soontir rolls three hits to my one evade, and dealt the remaining damage needed to put B down for the loss. I'm officially moving Peta up to "Nemesis." :D

Thoughts:

Again, Autothrusters was such a clutch upgrade. It's the key to the IG's durability, and allows the droids to abuse range 3 to a degree that nobody else could match. Just plan on the ship being a 38-point ship every time you fly it. They offer better than C3PO levels of durability, working on every range 3 and out-of-arc turret attack. They are amazing.

I also feel that building each IG as a separate 50-point ship, with upgrades keyed to their specific pilot abilities, was a great way to go. It made it hard for the opponents to plan, as each ship was similar yet had vastly different capabilities and damage outputs.

Still a bit torn on the Hot Shot Blaster. I mean, in 3 of 5 matches, it missed and served as a moral lesson in why ordinance is bad. But then you have the moment where it vaporized a pesky B-Wing, and just the threat of it was able to keep my opponent from going too aggressive and getting into range 2 on a few occasions. I keep going back and forth on it.

"They offer better than c3p0 levels of durability, working on every range 3 and out of arc turret attack"

Congrats on the wins! Not a fan of auto thrusters especially on IG'S for the reason listed but I really like the asymmetrical build!

I was your opponent match 2! Great match once again. This was my first tournament for X-wing. I have to admit the differences in ship upgrades was unique. I practiced as many games as I could 2 nights before against my friends Ig list and thought I had finally got those things figured out. Our match left my brain fatigued and in a game later my B-wing adv sens for barrel roll then ptl for a TL and went for a 2kturn.... So thoughtless... So my opponent got to stick my bwings nose in the corner like the bad boy he was... My group of friends were rooting for you after we left. There were 4 of us and 2 were using dual IG lists and I almost ran one myself. Grats on top 8, better luck next time (except against me darn it!)

Awesome report. I flew my own Aggressor build to 2nd place at our last store championship on Saturday. Like you, I can't imagine running these guys without Autothrusters. Every game it seemed it saved me from damage after damage after damage. If you can hold traditional ships at Range 3, you can have your way with turreted ships (to an extent) from a defensive perspective.

I am also coming around to the conclusion that asymmetric builds tailored to each ship's ability are the way to go. You don't want to lose one, but you have to plan for the eventuality, right? I am a big fan of Inertial Dampeners, and seeing you combo that with Adrenaline Rush makes me giggle. I think Adrenaline is a great card for IG because position for these guys is everything. Being able to take a white 4-K or 3-S even while stressed could be super clutch.

Kudos, and best of luck!

That match was exhausting, and as tired as I was last night when I wrote this, I didn't really come close to highlighting just how close it was. 1 fricking hull left on B if I recall, right? Holy crap.
