Campaign idea feedback - the I-team

By evanfardreamer, in Game Masters

In 2ABY, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security detention center to the D'Astan sector underground. Today, still wanted by the Empire, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the I-Team.

If any of you have read Allegiance, the story of the Hand of Judgement really struck a chord with me. Ever since the Thrawn trilogy, the Empire has been more than villainy to me - certainly there were corrupt or evil individuals, especially near the top of the ladders, but the great majority of folks just did what they could to carry on with their lives. Occasionally, someone good would wind up on the wrong side of it - whether they didn't share prejudices, or had too much nobility to massacre without cause.

I've wanted to do an Imperial campaign for a while, but I wasn't sure how to do it without it bogging down very quickly. Either folks would be pro-Empire and love trodding on minorities, or they'd be borderline washouts who just had to get involved. The problem being, of course, that some of each would be in the game, and those two are not exactly long-term compatible viewpoints.

It struck me as I was posting in one of my PbP forums - it'd be fantastic, I think, to do an Imperial version of the A-team. Imperial Army troopers (not stormtroopers) who were sent on a mission to rob a Muunilist transfer station to pin on the rebels (while being told that they were actually raiding a vault of a Rebel sympathizer) who were caught and were to be hung out to dry and executed. Only, they escaped, and they're now on the run trying to still do right for the Imperial citizens while staying off the Empire's radar (or getting out of town when they descended on the aftermath).

I want to get a bit more of it hammered out before I take requests to join; I like the high-adventure, fairly comedic, and episodic nature of the show, and would like to capture that in play. Where the good guys are always good, the bad guys are always bad, and the heroes were constantly getting themselves in over their heads and have to come up with outlandish schemes to get loose.

I would make it clear at the beginning that I'd expect them to be captured repeatedly (I mean, after all, why would they just shoot the poor troopers who were doing their jobs?) but that they'd always find a way to escape before the sector governor showed up to gloat and turn them in for his bonus. They'd need to be human, or very near-human and good with disguises, to be accepted into the Imperial Army; the fun would be in the characters concepts and story, rather than the static combinations of which race is best for which career.

I actually was going to do my own version called Aurek-Squad or Aurek-Team. Mine would have been a Republic Commando Unit similar to what Wraith Squadron would be for the New Republic.

I have been considering what races I'd make the characters.

Hannible is begging to be Arkanian due to their boost to intelligence checks (unofficial species menagerie) and of course the white hair. Face, I'm thinking Twi'lek given how they are portrayed as charming and charismatic individuals. Murdock, probably Corellian Human to fit with the hotshot crazy pilot vibe and finally BA would have to be a big strong burly race but I want to avoid Wookiee since that seems like a too obvious go to race. Barabel would be nice if I could get stats for them.

Just off the top of me head, I'd say go with Trandoshan but trade the Perception skill rank & Regeneration trait for a tail attack similar to the Selonians' (Agility + Brawl). Essentially, you'd be giving the Trandoshans a tail, allowing them to Knockdown foes with 1 Advantage instead of the normal 2 for Brawl attacks, albeit with a lower natural characteristic (Agility) for the skill pool.

The A Team was before my time so I'm not too familiar with BA from the show, but what about a droid? A droid can be pretty much anything you need it to be.

As a character, BA was the big bada** heavy of the team. He was also the teams mechanic and driver. He also argued with Murdock constantly and had a fear of flying, So whenever they needed to fly they had to knock him out somehow. With a droid that would be a bit too easy, but a good idea non the less.

The A-Team makes for a great EotE premise.

Been running my Wild Card group under that auspice since last year.
