Mangler Cannon crit timing

By Gibarian, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just want to verify that I'm not unintentionally cheating whenever I use the Mangler.

There's no timing involved with turning a hit to a crit, and you can execute the ability before or after modifying, right?

So I could conceivably roll three dice (crit, blank, blank) then reroll the blanks with a TL/Predator (eyeball, eyeball), then spend a focus to turn the eyeballs to hits, then use the Mangler to turn one of the hits to a crit (for a final result of crit, crit).

Is that kosher?

You can resolve your dice modifiers in any order you wish, so that is indeed kosher.

Technically, you only have to wait until the defender has had his chance to modify and then you're good to modify in any order you wish.

So if you have no Focus and roll Hit, Blank, Blank. Defender can use Sensor Jammer and block Mangler from activating.

That would do the trick.

Neither.

You use it during the modify attack dice step.

So if you have no Focus and roll Hit, Blank, Blank. Defender can use Sensor Jammer and block Mangler from activating.

I think Tuls referred to if the attacker had no Focus tokens.

Just to make it clear Sensor Jammer can force the Hit to a Focus result that can then not be re-rolled. It can however be modified to a hit by Focus Tokens, Marksmanship, etc. and then be further modified by the Mangler cannon to a Crit.

I believe dvor has things right.

The Mangler Cannon doesn't even start looking at the dice it rolled until you get to the part where you get to apply your modifiers. Those could be rerolls or they could be turns making more turns. With the Mangler, a reroll, and a Focus it would be possible to go from an initial [black] to a rerolled [eye] getting converted into a [boom] with the Focus token and then a [kaboom] with the Mangler's ability.

As for dice modification you have to give the defender an opportunity to modify the attack dice if they can (there is only a few upgrade cards that can do this) After that you can then modify the dice in any order as long as you follow these rules.

  • Do not re-roll a die that has already been re-rolled or a die that is not allowed to be re-rolled (from sensor jammer).
  • You cannot modify after a upgrade states to cancel all dice results and cannot be modified after this (such as accuracy corrector.)

Example of dice modification (assuming the defender has no more modification for attack dice) Lets say you fire a proton torpedo and have at least 2 focus results with a focus token. You can first modify 1 focus to a critical result and then spend the focus to modify the rest of the focus results to critical hits. You can place the order of modifications in any way that makes it better for you.

Dice cancelling effects happen after modifying defence dice but does not prevent further modification unless staded. Accuracy Corrector adds dice results after cancelling dice.

Ffocus tokens do not result in critical hit results. I think you mis typed that one

Ffocus tokens do not result in critical hit results. I think you mis typed that one

Proton Torpedoes: You may change 1 of your Focus results to a Critical Hit result.

Yes but it then says do us token followed by critical hits, which is wrong,

You don't spend a focus token for that - you just have to roll a focus result

Calculation on the other hand.......

You keep not reading the part I am referring to. the work critical appears twice in the sentence. Second time is the one I am referring to. It is wrong. Focus tokens turns the focus results into regular hit results.

Didn't even notice that second "critical" there!
