Outmaneuver - Senators Shuttle...?

By micah3639, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So me and my friend came across this complication when playing "Political Escort" Scenario.

The situation: I'm playing the rebels, and Biggs has been killed already. Whisper is attacking the shuttle from behind. My opponent argued that since the shuttle doesn't have a firing arc, outmaneuver is automatically applied. I argued that since it doesn't have a firing arc, and it also can't attack, outmaneuver can't be applied to it.

Can anyone clarify this controversy?

You are correct, as far as I can see. The FAQ doesn't mention Outmanoeuvre, but Backstabber's ability is stated in the Missions section as not applying to a ship with no printed firing arc, and the same logic would apply to this situation.

"Aha! I have managed to outmanoeuvre you to the extent that your non-existent guns can no longer fire at me! Oh, err... Not sure why I put that much effort in..."

Besides, your mate is being a tad cheeky merely by taking a Phantom in that scenario. When that was written all the Imperial ships had 2 attack dice, and trust me, it's tricky enough at that level for the Rebels to win! With a Phantom on the board I'd be surprised if you made it 2/3rds of the way across the board! ;-)

The FAQ specifically states that in order to be outside a defenders firing arc, the defender must have a firing arc and your entire base must be outside it.

The senators shuttle is used as the example, as it has no firing arc, it is impossible to be outside it.

Incidentally, it's equaly impossible to be inside it...

This.

I wonder if we'll ever get an in-game usable ship that has no firing arc.

Other than the Rebel Transport?

For standard play. One that can still somehow attack.

Interesting...any other thoughts on this?

Yes. The FAQ is very clear, and even uses the Senators shuttle as the example. If you have no firing arc, then an attacker can not be outside it.
