First time GM - Any Tips?

By PrinceofThorns3, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

While I am new to role-playing games, I have been a Star Wars fan for years. Recently, I obtained a copy of the Edge of the Empire full book as well as the GM expansion. I am planning on starting a weekly game with some friends who are also into board games, but only one of them has played a role-playing game before (D&D).

I have a couple questions while planning for our first adventure:

1. Should I use miniatures?

  • I know that D&D commonly uses miniatures, however, the rules for this game seem so fast paced that using figurines would take away from the thematic appeal. I do have both Star Wars miniatures and Star Wars space battles miniatures, so I could use them if I wanted.
  • Also, would a game mat be advisable even without miniatures? That way, all the players can have an idea for combat situations.

2. What are the best resources you can suggest in preparation for this first game?

  • Handouts, podcasts, anything that would make the experience better for both myself and the others.

3. Do I need two sets of dice or does one work?

4. What printouts are necessary for the first game which will include character creation?

  • Because this is our first time meeting, I will need to explain the rules and the players will create their characters. Does their exist rule sheets that can make this easier. Also, what character sheets do you see as important for printing out to help the players create their character?

Any tips/hints/suggestions are appreciated. Like I said, I am new to role-playing games and some help would be welcome.

Thanks

- Zach

  1. Using miniatures is certainly not a requirement, but depending on your group or yourself, they could be an aid, especialy with starship combat. The big thing to remember is that the actual distance (number of squares/hexes) is irrelevant, and only the range bands in general are of any consequence.
    • In the digital world, GhostOfMan has some good ideas.
    • And on the tabletop, GM Hooly has some as well.
  2. There is a thread on this forum that contains a collection of a ton of useful stuff.
    • I like pages 4-9 of Under a Dark Sun for a quick hand-out rules reference. I have printed and laminated them to drop on the table for all to use.
    • OggDude's character generator is invaluable.
  3. Two sets of dice should work for all needs during the beginning of the game. Personally, I have three, but that third set has been unnecessary so far. It really just allows people to be preparing their dice pools simultaneously.
  4. See #2 above. Also, the talent trees from www.beggingforxp.com are very nice to have.

Welcome to EotE, and good luck! There are plenty of people here that can help answer any questions. Also, chances are good that your questions have already been asked and answered - this forum is full of great information and advice.

If you are new to this type of game, I would strongly suggest the beginner box set. It skips the character creation and gets you right into the action. That way once players decide to create their own characters they can see what the characters can do before they have to make uninformed decisions about skills and talents.

Plus, you get a set of dice, and a free PDF followup adventure that is about 3 times longer. Well worth it.

1) I'd say start with them, and then migrate away from them as you play more. Even as you go these days you can usually just make a handful of little lines denoting range bands and that's all you need really.

2) Order 66 podcast is one of my favs. Hydrian Way is one that's not as fancy, but also focuses more time on the actual games and rules without the witty banter.

3) Two is best, but you can get by with one. The dice apps are good too.

4) Plenty of copies of the talent trees. Its just easier if you have your character sheet, and your talent tree/tress sheets stapled to it. Either the GM screen or one of the quick reference charts showing how to spend threat/advantage and such is also very very good to have on hand.
