Named pilots - Gender & Race

By PHRAETUS, in X-Wing

Force sensitivity is, of course, no match for good BFM.

Are you at all a fan of Kelly Sue Deconnick's Captain Marvel series? The premise is Carol Danvers, aviatrix. It's a whole lot of fun and the Carol Corp is an awesome group of boys and girls.

I've never actually been much into comics to be honest, so I haven't heard of this. But you sort of had me at Aviatrix. Can you link me something on it?

This is the series to start with.

The first few issues are collected as a trade called "In Pursuit of Flight" which you can find on Amazon or elsewhere. It re-emphasizes her origin as a fighter pilot and moves her more in that direction than just superheroes doing super things. Earlier series focus on other aspects, but Kelly Sue's version is pilot first and then superhero.

Here's a pretty basic primer to help you get started.

And, to keep this on topic, Carol is a Star Wars fan with a cat named Chewie.

EDIT: One more interesting link.

I wonder if any of these pilots is a jedi knight or a sith.

Off the top of my head the following pilots are force sensitive:

Luke Skywalker

Darth Vader

Keyan Farlander

Maarek Stele

Corran Horn

Kyle Katarn

Carnor Jax

Aren't a lot of the Royal Guards Force Sensitives?

The Seattle Museum of Flight rocks. That's where I met some of the Soviet Female fighter pilots from WW2. They were attending a conference there, so I flew up to meet them.

I wonder if I should be glad or apprehensive that this topic has come up again.

There was previous thread on it, which got pretty ugly and was shut down. Many of you probably remember it. It was triggered by debate around the question of "Echo" and "Whisper"'s' gender... or something associated with it. That, and other stuff. I can't quite recall, and don't want to revisit all that too much.

But, long-story-short, I like it that there are a larger number of female pilots in the game, and that we might get a female-lead SW movie. Hopefully, the story won't be built that fact, but can just be seen as normal.

I read that other thread. Decided not to necro it and stir the pot any farther concerning what was contained within.

Yeah. That's for the best. At least it's there as a reminder, though.

We could always re-hash the topic of interspousal gaming invitations.

Shhh! I want to avoid another patriarchal wagon circle. Besides, this thread is a good one and doesn't need to be locked.

The only pilot I've had occasion to meet was still a real treasure -- Colonel Gail Halvorsen, the "Berlin Candy Bomber." He wasn't a top ace, or even a fighter pilot at all, but he was a real hero to a whole bunch of hungry, scared, kids, during the Berlin Airlift. He was also one of the kindest, most humble, and most polite men I've ever had the pleasure to interact with, when my university hosted him for a few talks.

It was a real treat seeing him in his old flight suit, giving his talk amidst a bunch of retired WWII-era planes.

That's awesome! I've got a collection of autographs in a picture book of airplanes from when I was little. I've got Tex Hill, Gabby Gabreski, Urban L Drew, and others in there. It's great to have.

I wonder if any of these pilots is a jedi knight or a sith.

Quite possibly, I was just doing the unique pilots

Just read up a little on Lydie Litvyak.
Amazing story Nightshrike, thanks for bring that to my attention.
Kind of surprised that her story has not been made into a movie yet, certainly reads like one!

Yeah, it has been in Russia several times, but the Cold War put a freeze on us learning about their heroes in WW2, or the Great Patriotic War, as it is known over there. Soviet female fighter pilots are a huge passion for me, because they were my role models growing up. Even in American movies, like Iron Eagle II, it was the Soviets who let the women fly airplanes and do cool things. And when I went to Space Academy, it was all about Valentina Tereshkova and all the other firsts for Soviet women in space. Not that I'm not a patriotic American and all, but if you're a girl looking for aerospace role models, the Soviets have all the firsts and most of the bests.

Only just read this.

General Rom Mohc Dark Forces.

End boss of Dark forces.

I'm genuinely disappointed in this community that it took that long for someone to recognize him, and in the end it was only the one. But here are your internets, to be redeemed at your leisure.

Agree with all points, Vanor. Starbuck comes across as hyper-masculine early on in the series, but that chills out later, and she develops as a more fully-rounded character in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with doing a girly girl as a fighter pilot though. Lily Litvyak, the highest scoring female ace of all time, had bouquets of flowers in her cockpit and added fur trim to her military-issue uniforms to make them more stylish. She kept a supply of make-up and peroxide on base to keep up the blonde bombshell look too.

That is BOSS AS HELL. How have I never heard about her before?

Because she fought for the Eastern Bloc?

I mean really, who had heard about the russian sniper dude before Enemy at the Gates? Or that finnish sniper dude, before some random cracked article?

Partly because she's Soviet and a lot because she's a girl, and even more because she's a WW2 fighter ace. Most people don't even know Erich Hartmann, Richard Bong, Ivan Kozhedub, etc.

I was poking about through 'Wings of Glory' the other night & Lily Litvyak's plane is a playing piece for the WWII version.

I have 3 of them. I'd have 4 but I thought 3 was probably enough. I should get the 4th though and repaint it as Katya Budanova. Nearly as many kills as Litvyak, but she gets no love at all.

Where can I read about these force sensitives pilots?

I wonder if any of these pilots is a jedi knight or a sith.

Any of...which pilots? Ones from that list in the OP? Absolutely. Several.

Could you give me some examples?

Sir Emil Crane answered this for you on the previous page. He gave this list of force-sensitive pilots:

Luke Skywalker

Darth Vader

Keyan Farlander

Maarek Stele

Corran Horn

Kyle Katarn

Carnor Jax

Of those, Darth Vader is sith, obviously, Luke is a Jedi, Keyan Farlander and Maarek Stele, the protagonists of the video game X-wing and the video game TIE fighter were not Jedi or Sith, but were force sensitive, Corran Horn of the X-wing novels and the book "I, Jedi" was...a Jedi. Kyle Katarn, hero of Dark Forces and Dark Forces 2 also became a Jedi. Carnor Jax was a force-sensitive Imperial Guard in the extended universe.

Sorry, SaberPilot, I missed your return question. Shrike knocked it outta the ballpark, though, and filled you in pretty well.
