Named pilots - Gender & Race

By PHRAETUS, in X-Wing

Y'know, that's a really cool idea! I think I'll do this with one of my X-wings.

If you're so inclined, I'd also repaint your ship to a custom color scheme so you can readily identify yourself. It will make the game much more personal.

I've absolutely begun to think in that direction. We have a campaign planned this summer that combines IA Skirmish and X-Wing, modeled loosely on the "Mandatory Retirement" story arc of the old Rogue Squadron comics.

The biggest difficulty is overcoming their dislike of competitive games. Playing against one "DM" is fine, but one on one is less appealing.

This is what I see whenever I look at your avatar:

I wonder if any of these pilots is a jedi knight or a sith.

I really do want to make some custom generic pilots.

Does strange eons come with the xwing plug in or where do I get that?

It definitely does. I have used it a few times. I can't recall where I got the plug in from though. Maybe a google search will help.

Any of...which pilots? Ones from that list in the OP? Absolutely. Several.

Picked up Imperial Assault a few weeks ago. My 10 year old daughter seemed interested in it, but when she found out she could play girl heroes, that really sold her on the game.

It was a nice touch IMO for FFG to include women heroes in the game as it is more welcoming to girls that way.

I am so glad you posted this. Wish I could like it five times. When I was that age, there were some games I just wouldn't play if you couldn't be a girl character. When I played X-wing and TIE Fighter, I loved that they never gave away the identity of the pilot. The EU "pilots" for those games being both male really irritates the heck out of me. When X-wing alliance came out, I considered boycotting it because they made the player exclusively male, which they had never done before.

I too am really glad that FFG includes female heroes in its games. Make her a fun all-girls list for X-wing and get her hooked on that too!

I am just going to go on a /rant here

Finding female action figures for my 5 year old daughter is an absolutely retarded nightmare! Can't even get Hera and Sabine! I had to say that the Tie pilot that came with a TIE Bomber is a girl because it has a slimmer figure than the other ones I had (I then proved it by showing her that Star Wars Imperial Anime that was made).

So yes, another thing to thank FFG about..

Also - in our game group we 'change' the names of characters in the campaign. Makes it more personal.

Finding my niece a non-sexualized Batgirl action figure verged on impossible. I had to specifically go find a "retro" one at a comic book shop. It's interesting that there are all these threads about why girls have a hard time getting into X-wing and other miniatures games, and this is pretty much what it boils down to. Role models matter a great deal to children. They're learning who they are as people, and they're looking to see where they fit within society. Kids really have a strong desire to fit in, especially young kids. So, if there are no cool girls doing these sorts of things, then girls won't be interested, and that lack of interest carries over into adulthood. There is a reason Disney princesses are so popular, and in my mind it has less to do with pink and pretty dresses (though pretty dresses are great) and more to do with the fact that the stories all center around a female main character (even if it's not a particularly assertive or forward-thinking female main character a lot of the time). So, being able to supply those role models in the Star Wars universe to young girls is crucial to encouraging an interest, not just in scifi, but in space and technology.

I'm really hoping Rogue One will have a cool female fighter pilot chick for a new generation of girls to look up to.

I was wondering if FFG would ever do a contest or promotion where you get to choose a named pilot and replace the name and picture with your own and get a custom card and cardboard base insert. Would be great!

Edit- back on topic. Could we add a bit about the named droids and or crew members? Would love to know at a glance which astro goes with which rebel pilot.

I do too, partly so my two girls have someone to look up to, although the one is 19 now and in college, so not sure how much impact that would have on her...

But mostly I hope so just because it would be nice to see a woman pilot, and preferably one nothing like Starbuck from BSG. (IMO Starbuck was really not much more than a woman in a mans role because it would be kool and different... But I didn't care for the show at all so I have limited experience to judge.)

On the other hand, I thought that they did a good job with a number of the woman in shows like SG1 and Atlantis, or B5, or even in Agents of Shield, would like to see more like that.

There is a reason Disney princesses are so popular...

One thing I really liked about Frozen, was you finally had a Disney Princess movie where the princess didn't need a man to save the day. I thought the story had a lot more impact because it was about the love of a sister/family rather than the standard "price charming" ending.

This. Also this is why Frozen was so popular. You had a female lead who really did NOT need rescuing, gave precisely zero f**ks about romance and had the cool powers to boot. Also, catchy soundtrack. (while editing this got ninja'd true though)

I've never wanted Autumn to be a teapots and princesses girl (I mean she is, and that's fine but..) we want more girl heroes, villains action figures etc. Star Wars especially suffers hard from this.

Agree with all points, Vanor. Starbuck comes across as hyper-masculine early on in the series, but that chills out later, and she develops as a more fully-rounded character in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with doing a girly girl as a fighter pilot though. Lily Litvyak, the highest scoring female ace of all time, had bouquets of flowers in her cockpit and added fur trim to her military-issue uniforms to make them more stylish. She kept a supply of make-up and peroxide on base to keep up the blonde bombshell look too.

It's hard to fight that at a young age. Between 3 and about 9 girls and boys both are finding a gender identity that fits them, and so they tend to be hyper-conservative about boundaries. That means that without large numbers of female heroines doing star wars type things in media, most girls in that age bracket are going to view it as not being for them.

Though pretty dresses and princesses may not be purely a cultural thing. I alternate between this site and ModCloth all the time...

I just want to be friends with Olaf.

Honestly that's part of what turned me off from the show. Starbuck was so clearly nothing more than the original Starbuck with ....

But if I may ask, without worrying too much about derailing this thread, because it's well past that point. :)

What was your opinion of the women from SG1/Atlantis? I remember hearing something about how all the women in that show were just eye candy, which I never got, because even if some of them showed a little skin they were all strong independent women who respected and solid team members.

Telya for example may of showed some skin, but there was no question she could kick John's butt in a fight, and didn't need anyone to come to her rescue.

I wonder... if Faye Valentine wasn't so overly sexualized in appearance, would she suffice as a role model of some kind?

I remember how disappointed my buddy's daughter was when they bought her a Guardians of the Galaxy group-shot tee, only to find out -- they hadn't even noticed at the store -- that everyone was on the shirt except Gamora. Like, the raccoon and the tree made the cut, but they couldn't put the token girl on their shirt.

No idea, I never saw the show. Did it have starfighter pilots or regular fighter pilots? If so, I may have to go check it out.

Not Star Wars action figures, but in case some of you haven't seen these.

My cousin backed the kickstarter for his daughter and they are really cool figs.

Easily my favorite thing to come out of this thread is the introduction of this lady. Lady fight pilots are easily some of the coolest things in existence and the word "aviatrix" will be immediately entering my vocabulary.

I'm a crazy repository of aviatrix info, having met and interviewed Soviet Female fighter pilots and American WASP. I helped make a quilt for Anna Yegorova before she died. She is well worth a google. Also, google Harriet Quimby. Now there is an aviatrix.

Are you at all a fan of Kelly Sue Deconnick's Captain Marvel series? The premise is Carol Danvers, aviatrix. It's a whole lot of fun and the Carol Corp is an awesome group of boys and girls.

How can we confirm Jabba is Male?

I've never actually been much into comics to be honest, so I haven't heard of this. But you sort of had me at Aviatrix. Can you link me something on it?

Off the top of my head the following pilots are force sensitive:

Luke Skywalker

Darth Vader

Keyan Farlander

Maarek Stele

Corran Horn

Kyle Katarn

Carnor Jax
