Named pilots - Gender & Race

By PHRAETUS, in X-Wing

Although I have loved Starwars since being taken to the drive in to watch the original in the mid 70's, I will admit that I didn't follow the lore via all the various books, comics & god knows what else that followed.

Subsequently, most of the named pilots in X-Wing did not mean anything to me.

Today I thought I'd put together a list of all the named pilots along with their Gender, race, Ship flown, faction & a link to addition data from Wookieepedia for my small group of social X-Wingers as a quick fire argument stopper.

If you are curious, it looks like this

What I could not find was info on the two Phantom Characters "Echo" & "Whisper".
I assume that they are both human, and the FAQ refers to "Echo" as a 'She', but of Whisper I could find nothing.

Does anyone know if these are pilot names or are they Ship designations, given that the Phantom has Two crew members per ship?
Where have they been sourced from?

Ask FFG. Seriously, anything anyone says here is just their opinion. FFG created them and only FFG can say one way or the other what they are. But, considering what happens anytime anyone brings up race and/or gender...

Ok, cool, just thought I may have been missing something obvious.

I was actually quite surprised that pretty much everyone else had a point of origin. I was even more surprised how many came from the original Starwars MMORPG.

But, considering what happens anytime anyone brings up race and/or gender...

Do you mean specifically in regard to those two or any Pilot in general?

Yeah the Phantom was an imperial superweapon in one of the vidya, no named pilots as thaey are the faceless enemy.

All of the above, it's coming, and I'll be accused of "poking the beast".

I'm suprised how few races the alliance list contain...

Almost all human...

Humans dominate the SW universe, an almost 10-1 ratio. Humans populate hundreds of worlds, aliens usually only have their home world and possibly a few colony worlds. It's a pretty human-centric setting outside of hutt space(where all the fun is...).

Sounds about time for an Alien Uprising!

Remembering the parliament of the old republic in the first three movies, i remember seeing a huge lot of ET!

Echo and Whisper are FFG Originals.

For all the sci-fi I have inhaled over the decades, I don't ever recall seeing a Starwars Star map? I assume there is one?

Actually it was created by George Lucas and Lucas Arts. So only Lucas Arts (owned by Disney) has any say what the characters are. FFG only prints the card and art in best representation of the characters from Lucas Arts.

As for FFG so called "originals" they still need the approval from Lucas Arts to make them.

Unless you know otherwise, all pilots are bothan.

I want to see more aliens in Star wars...not just X-Wing but the new movies. They always seem to be in the background in high numbers but not at the forefront.

Duros are a race who live a lot of their life in space, surely there would be quite a few pilots!

Great spreadsheet! Interesting to see that scum and villainy are much more diverse in terms of species (especially if we include droids) and gender than are the other factions. Maybe that's why I like them so much.

I think I've seen Whisper referred to as both male & female, so maybe we're looking at a transgender pilot.

Now if you want to really get crazy with that list, add in the home planets of all those humans. I'm sure the Corellians would insist upon it.

This is cool, I discovered a few things I hadn't known (mainly that Leeachos and Vrill were non-humans).

I think the suggestion of dividing the human's by planet is a good one!

Lucasfilm. Disney finally put Lucasarts out of its misery.

Also, FFG does create characters in the Star Wars universe. Just because it was approved doesn't mean Lucasfilm created them. Unless you want to argue that Mara Jade and Thrawn were created by someone other than Timothy Zahn...

This is a great list you made up, I loved reading about some of the scum pilots, specifically Torkil Mux..you really have to. Have some stones to steal from Jabba!!

And awful lot of them do die...

Whisper has been confirmed by FFG to be female so you can correct her gender to female. Which means the empire is marginally less of a sausage fest the the dirty rebel terrorists.

I think it's interesting how many of the top-tier Imperial pilots are female, actually. Whisper, Echo, Kath, Howlrunner...sure, they might be the only gals on the Imp side, but they're pretty popular/crucial/powerful.

Howlrunner, definitely. Whisper too. Imperial Kath's kind of a dud though. Echo... let's not go there. Contradictory sources (articles say he, FAQ says she) and people tend to get somewhat... passionate, over it.

Scum's got very solid female pilots though, and lots of them. Every unique ship is completely gender neutral (Viper and M3A have a guy and a gal, and the Aggressor's all robots) and MW has Scum Kath, who's arguably the best Firespray in the game.

But the FAQ is the last word, right? We should email the developers demanding to know the truth of the fictional pilot card's sex.

Isn't it a functionally irrelevant distinction for the purposes of the game? I mean, as far as my headcanon goes all generics and unspecified pilots might as well be women, but it's not bloody necessary for my enjoyment of the game. And if it was, I think I'd be judging the game on merits other than its own, like trying to take Scrambler morality into the modern justice system or something.

I rather thought that was my point.
