You Build the Character #5: Scum & Villainy

By awayputurwpn, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello everyone, and welcome back to You Build the Character, FFG Edition!

This is the fifth installment of the monthly competition in which FFG community members can compete to build their versions of famous characters from the Star Wars universe. The winner is decided by popular vote, and will receive all the honor and glory that comes with peer approval! The winning build will also be eternally enshrined in the YBtC Hall of Fame .

This month's challenge is to build your favorite “Scum & Villainy” from the Star Wars Universe, either as Player Characters (PCS) or Non-Player Characters.

BountyHunters-TCW2.jpg

The following rules apply to your submissions:

1. An entry may consist of up to THREE separate builds. The builds may contain a mix of PCs and NPCs. You can, for example, build a PC version of Cad Bane and an NPC version of his droid, Todo 360, as a single entry. You could also, for example, stat out three separate Nemesis builds of the same character, utilizing the EotE GM Kit’s Nemesis Development rules.

2. As “Scum & Villainy” suggests, the character(s) that you build must be “fringe” and must be “villains.” For example: Darth Vader is not Scum & Villainy, but Boba Fett is. Jar-Jar Binks is not Scum & Villainy, but Hondo Ohnaka is. Han Solo is not Scum & Villainy, but Jabba the Hutt is.

3. All entries must contain at least one “infamous” character; that is, a character with a reputation in the Star Wars Universe. Three nameless pirates (or pirates that you’ve made up yourself) do not count as an entry.

4. You may use as much XP as you like to build your PCs (or to Develop your Nemeses), but attempts to be both thematic and reasonable are highly encouraged. You can grant these characters any amount of additional XP as "earned XP” to be spent on talents, skills, and specializations.

5. If building a PC: All builds MUST adhere to the Rules As Written (RAW) for Player Character creation (Steps 1 - 9) and advancement. No skipping talents in trees, no homebrewed rules. You may ignore Step 10 of character creation, or include it in your builds, at your discretion. If you choose to use Step 10, simply select one of the RAW options available from Age of Rebellion, Force and Destiny, or Edge of the Empire .

6. All FFG-published material for the Star Wars RPG is fair game for creating and/or advancing your character: Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and the Force and Destiny Beta (using the latest errata available), including any supplements or other officially published material from these lines, may be used.

7. Your build(s) may come complete with any gear and equipment.

8. The Legends universe is open, as is anything from the Star Wars canon . Including a picture with your build is encouraged!

9. All entries must include a full stat block for each character, which should be presented in a fashion similar to the stat blocks found in official material, and should contain a minimum of the following:

Character Name/Title/Classification, Species & Career*

Any Specialization(s)

Background text

Duty, Morality, and/or Obligation score*

Characteristics (Brawn, Agility, etc)

Soak, Wound Threshold, Strain Threshold, Defense

Skill Ranks

Talents

Abilities

Equipment

*Careers and Duty/Morality/Obligation are PC-only traits

You have until 8am PST on Friday, March 27th (4pm February 27th GMT) to enter/edit your builds, after which entries will be closed. Any entries edited after the deadline will be disqualified.

Voting will commence as soon as entries close! The voting period will then run through the end of March, and the winner will be determined by popular vote at 12am PST on April 1 (8am GMT).

Thanks, and happy building!

This is Boba Fett before Cloud City in Episode V, when he's tracking down Han Solo for Jabba the Hutt

Boba Fett (Everyone knew he was going to be in here somewhere)

Career: Bounty Hunter (Duh)

Specialisation: Gadgeteer

Species: Human

Br: 2 Ag: 4 Int: 2 Cun: 3 Will: 3 Pre: 2

Soak: 2+2+1, WT: 12, ST: 13, Def: 3/2

Skills: Piloting (Planetary) 2, Piloting (Space) 2, Perception 1, Streetwise 1, Coercion 2, Ranged (Light) 1, Ranged (Heavy) 2, Resilience 1, Survival 1

Talents: Toughened 1, Jury Rigged 1, Armor Master, Tinkerer 1, Dedication (Ag), Intimidating 2, Improved Armor Master, Spare Clip, Point Blank 1

Equipment: Heavy Battle Armor (RD +1), Jetpack, Blaster Rifle (+1 HP), Utility Belt, Backpack

Motivation: Blood Money - His job involves hunting down and capturing or killing people, so it would make sense for him to have no objections here

Obligation: Bounty - He's hunting down Han Solo for Jabba

Abilities: None

I gave him the characteristic jetpack and armor that Boba is very much known for, as well as a good Agility score for shooting and piloting the Slave I. I didn't give him 3 Brawn because I felt that 3 might be better spent in another category, and I felt Cunning to be a better option.

I decided to do two versions of Cad Bane. The first as him as a PC, the second is him as an NPC. In both cases, he is Cad Bane by the end of The Clone Wars, (presumably) height of his career.

Cad Bane (PC)

Cad_Bane_zpsdcmkj5ry.png

Species : Duros

Career : Smuggler

Specialization(s) : Gunslinger, Assassin
Background :

Bane grew up on New Tayana, a space city orbiting the polluted surface of Duro. By 24 years before the battle of Yavin IV, he began Bounty Hunting by tacking down bail jumpers and other lowlifes on New Tayana. Eventually he decided in order to make a name for himself - he would kill a Jedi. The person he tracked down turned out to be an imposter who used clever gadgets and subterfuge in order to pass himself off as a Jedi.

Bane spared the imposter under the agreement that he would teach Cad Bane everything he knew about creating gadgets.

Bane's accomplishments are many, but primary among them was the time he infiltrated the Jedi temple on Coruscant and stole a holocron from beneath their notice, or the time he help prominent members of the Republic senate hostage in order to force the Supreme Chancellor to free Ziro the Hutt.

Obligation : Criminal 20 (using 10 to purchase 10 extra starting XP)

Cad Bane is the holo-child of Criminal during the Clone Wars. A reputation he established when he stole a Jedi Holocron for the mysterious Darth Sidious, and later holding prominent members of the Republic Senate hostage. He's wanted by nearly every lawful system in the galaxy, and any who was skilled enough to best him, would earn themselves a fine bounty of credits.

Reward (Credits) : Bane has already established himself as a skilled mercenary and bounty hunter. Now, he has mostly set his Infamy motivation aside and focused on making Credits.

Designer Notes

General

PC Bane originally came out with almost 800 spent XP. Even for a PC at the height of his career that may be a little high. So I trimmed down where I could. He's still at a whopping 590XP beyond character creation, but I think I got him just how I want him without going too far. There's room for improvement, but Bane's player could retire him knowing that he fully reached his concept.

Career and Specializations

By profession, Cad Bane is not just a Bounty Hunter, but a general mercenary for hire. I'm a big proponent that career names in this game do not dictate their profession, or vice versa. Skimming pictures of him and the abilities he has to offer, he screams Gunslinger. Having him start out in the Smuggler career also gave me the nice opportunity to give him the Narrow Escape Signature Ability. As for his secondary profession, I'll probably loose some points for not picking Gadgeteer or Outlaw tech, but he's not known for his tricked out blasters, or his special swiss army knife armor. He's mostly known for having various gadgets that can get him out of trouble or surprise his enemies. So I decided to mostly go with narrative flair for that.

Talents

I primarily took talents from the Gunslinger tree, since that defines his shtick. Quckdraw and Improved Quickdraw were essential, as was Guns Blazing. Assassin allowed me easy access to more deadly talents such as extra ranks of dodge and lethal blows.Confidence is a must when going against Jedi or dealing with the likes of Darth Sidious.

Skills

Aside from some of the obvious, I wanted to make sure he had plenty of ranks of Mechanics. This alone could justify his ability to create custom gadgets for his job. As well as computers, streetwise which help him find his targets. Most importantly, I wanted to give him a few ranks of negotiation to help him make better deals.

Signature Ability

I didn't intend to give him Narrow Escape until I thumbed through it in Fly Casual. As many times as he has escaped capture a tight spot, I felt I had to give it to him. This may explain how he escape the Republic Judiciary prison, but that could be a bit of a stretch.

Items

His LL-30 blaster pistols AKA "Persuaders" are generic blaster pistols from Edge of the Empire with scopes. The Nashtah-hide tunic and cloak is a smuggler's trenchcoat which allows him to conceal 2 encumbrance 1 items. He conceals his pick and his holdout even further. Those are his surprise backup weapons.

The Icepick is reskinned molecular stiletto from Far Horizons

The rocket boots is just a reskinned jet pack.

Breathing tubes is a cybernetic organ. He doesn't seem to need them (in one episode he took them off to don Clone Trooper armor).

He isn't normally seen with a backpack, but he was over encumbered so I purchased a backpack and the player can reflavor it as a dozen small pockets all in his cloak.

Bane NPC version to follow soon.

A duros bounty hunter. He is famous for his Nashtah-hide tunic, heavy cloak, wide brimmed hat, and cybernetic breathing tubes. He also sports a number of concealed gadgets and gizmos, as well as a pair of modified LL-30 blaster pistols.

Bane carries himself with the confidence of a seasoned mercenary, and should be treated with caution and care.

Designer Notes

NPC Cad Bane still ended up being monstrous in real estate. On paper he appears to be an encounter all by himself. In this instance of Bane, I decided to let the Adversary handle all of his dodge capability, and the superior quality on his pistols represent the talents that would otherwise add to his super shooting skills. The only thing of note was his Rocket Boots. NPCs don't play by the same rules as PCs, and Cad Bane never plays by the rules. Rather than making a piloting planetary check to fly around, he simply uses it as an an automatic maneuver for the purposes of moving range bands.

His plan is to keep all melee/brawl combatants at arms length with his Bola and jump boots, while he prioritizes his target based on threat level and potential bounty.

(Edit: trimmed some unnecessary equipment off of him)

Only 9 days til the contest closes!

Looking forward to seeing some more scum here.

Ponda Baba & Dr. Evazan

Ponda Baba – Player character

Aqualish Quara

Hired Gun - Enforcer

Pondababa.png

Ponda Babba is a stereotypical Aqualish thug. He gets his way through intimidation tactics. He coerces, robs and steals and is a wanted ‘man’ due to his activities as a pirate (amongst others) in quite a few systems. He is dimwitted and quick to anger and finds enjoyment in drinking and fighting.

Real scum.

When it comes to talking however, Ponda takes a back seat to his companion Dr. Evazan who is (a bit) more outspoken than he is. However Ponda’s always right behind Evazan looming over his shoulders.

Cornelius Evazan, alias Roofo, Doctor Death and The Doctor has the death sentence in 12 systems and likes to brag about it. Whether or not he has a medical degree is highly questionable but at one time he was considered a most promising surgeon and had it not been for his madness he might have made it far.

Now, as it stands, many of his maimed victims and relatives of those who even died on his operating table have put a price on his head. A run-in with bountyhunter Jodo Kast left Evazan horribly disfigured.

Ever since then he has formed a doomed partnership with Aqualish thug Ponda Baba.

I think Uncle Owen counts as scum, since his first action when being entrusted with the son of the dark lord of the sith is to... keep him on his homeworld and not change his name. So, here he is!

uncle_owen_beru_death.jpg

Uncle Owen Lars, PC

Lars was talked into caring for his stepbrother's kid after some kind of lava accident by his wife, Peru. Together, they run a moisture farm; Lars works at fixing the moisture vaporators, showing the same technical skill he did when he built a hover chair for his father, Cliegg, after he lost his leg to Tusken Raiders. Owen believes in protecting his family above all else, and finds strong pride in the family business of... water... farming.

OK, after your nephew has stolen all your stuff and gone out joy riding, what do you do?

Well, I guess I go check on my farm's power converter.

Surprise! Stormtroopers! Roll vigilance.

Ok ok uh... 1 success, no advantage.

Oh uh... they got two successes. The minion group shoots you for... 10 damage and a crit. Because of that barfight earlier we add some and... 158. You die.
