Three phantoms at Aldershot store championship with some pictures (part 2, try harder)

By nurglez, in X-Wing Battle Reports

So, fresh from my success of not losing all my games at MK with KineticOperator's six sigma (went 4/6 and finished 12 out of 30+) I decided to try my luck at Aldershot. Quite a few people from my local store were going too, so it was bound to be a good time.

Echo location.

Echo, veteran Instincts, sensor jammer, rebel captive and advanced cloak

2 x sigma, enhanced scopes, intel agents and stygian particle accelerator

First opponent was Imperial.

Rexlar, lone wolf, heavy laser cannon

Howlrunner

3 academy pilots

My opponent was a friend of a regular at my local store, but I'd only played him once before. He admitted he had no idea how to face my list. I gunned for rexlar early on due to his weird opening, and managed to reduce him to 2 hp but then had to tangle with the Ties. made a few mistakes with Echo, and lost 2 sigma's for killing everything apart from a tie (I think).

Second opponent was scum.

Torkil Mux, ion turret, greedo

2x ps2 y wings with BTL-A4 title, ion turrets and agromechs

2x ps1 headhunters.

This opponent was a regular at my local store, and I'd gotten the train down to Aldershot with him. I'd had a practice game on thursday vs this same list, and I lost quite convincingly then. I knew from experience that I had to try and take down Torkil at range 3, otherwise I would lose.

I spent the first 3rd of the game running around and trying to draw him in, then an almost disasterous block from him made me have to bump a cloaked echo, or suffer a range 1 salvo from one of his y wings. but I did a beautiful decloak and k turn with Echo. I traded a sigma for Torkil and a bandit. after that it was pretty much over and I think I killed everything bar a Y wing.

Third opponent was Imperials.

3 alpha interceptors with autothrusters

2 academy ties

dark curse

This opponent is also a regular at my local store, and a pretty good swarm flyer. He's also known for his pretty bad luck.

I'm pretty confident about approaching a swarm that flies in a block, but 2 blocks can be pretty tricky. I tried to draw him in so I could pounce, but he was vey good at limiting Echo's decloak locations, and it was thanks to sensor jammer that I was able to keep Echo around at all (having to barrel roll or bump in order to get shots on me). Much furballing and having to switch targets meant not a lot of damage, but it added up. I managed to take out several ships and lost a sigma to the second last shot of the game.

Game four was vs Imperials.

Rear admiral, veteran Instincts, vader, rebel captive, Issard, engine upgrade

Whisper, Veteran Instincts, fire control system, advanced cloal

My opponent was also a regular from my local, and I'd played him quite a bit, but not that much recently. He'd won a store championship last week so gave the same list a try. This list looked like a nightmare for my list, and it was. Using what had worked in my previous game, I tried to draw him in, then try to keep echo at range 3 where I could, and cloaking and decloaking the sigmas so I could have a focus and an evade when I had to attack.

It had mixed results, I lost Echo, but managed to down whisper with a sigma thanks to a lucky 3 hits vs a cloaked whisper with only 1 shield left. With 2 sigma's vs a boosting decimator I knew I had my work cut out, so flew as well as I could, alternating blocking with 1 sigma while attacking with the other from range 3. I messed up and lost a sigma, and we went to time with both the decimator and my last sigma on 1 hp each.

32-71

My fifth opponent was rebels.

2x dagger b wings

4x tala headhunters

at last! my first opponent who I didn't know. I really liked the look of this list, a ps 4 rebel swarm. Shooting before my sigma's.

We set up for the joust, but there is no way I'm jousting that. I managed to force a bump with a cloaked sigma, then did my trademark "last game of the tournament" move and parked Echo on a roid, luckily I was out of arc of every enemy ship and also didn't have to go over it the next turn. I made him split by blocking some moves, and Echo tore into his fleet where she could. I Managed to kill 5 ships, with only a b wing surviving, for the loss of a Sigma.

76-29

It was supposed to be 6 games, but due to a few people dropping out last minute, they went to 5 so we could actually have a lunch break. with 4 full wins and a loss, I was pretty confident about making the cut, and make it I did, coming in 5th.

First knock out game.

Scum

IG-88B, predator, advanced sensors, heavy laser cannon, innertial dampeners, auto thrusters.

2x ps2 y wings with blaser turrets and agromechs.

Yet again this was a regular of my local store (5 of the top 8 were, including myself, my 3rd game opponent and my fourth game opponent).

Before game four I had been chatting with this guy, and we had agreed that I would be a bad match up for him, but instead I got to lose to a deciphantom.

He set up his Y wings centrally and the agressor on the right flank, while my ships were on the left. I decided to rush the y wing closest to me, which turned away while his agressor moved towards me. I chucked Echo round to his side of the board (range 1-2 from his edge) and managed to reduce IG-88 to 1 hit point remaining. Next turn I killed him, and my opponent conceded as there was little his Y wings could do to stop my sigma's or Echo, and we were both tired.

Second knock out game.

I played the same deciphantom that I had lost to in round 4. Unfortunately I was totally lacking the same mental fortitude and planning that I had in round 4, and lost rather quickly :( My opponent had obviously learned a bit from our earlier game, and I conceded after I had lost Echo and a sigma for 9 hit points remaining on the rear admiral and an untouched whisper.

So I came 4th at the last store championship I would be attending, and best result out of the 3 I could attend.

I walked away with my second alt art Soontir card, focus tokens and the dice bag.

Nice report.

However you have now 100% convinced me looking at the tables that the Templates with the markings in steps of Range 1 are indeed nothing more than pre- measuring Aids.

Even though you have them "Randomly" scattered I can see pretty much where every eventuality would leave me.

I have never played anyone with a set of those but I can honestly say I never will either.

I am rather messy and leave them on the table after my moves. But to each their own. I haven't willingly used this information to cheat, and if anyone had an issue with them I wouldn't use them.

In regards to the templates... Game three both guys are using exactly the same set! I've got Imperial and Scum sets from Cog 'o' Two, but always take my regular set in case anyone has an issue with them (to date no-one has!).

Anyways... Excellent write up Nurglez! Followed your last report with interest as I now have a third Phantom on it's way and I'm really interested in flying three. One question though, do you get much use out of Sensor Jammer on Echo?

Vs both rebel and imoeri swarms yes I got a lot of use from sensor jammer. some games it hardly seemed worth it, other times it was just amazing. Obviously if your opponent rolls crits it's not great, but it can also be a nice deterrent.

Of course I didn't come up with this list, kudos to keneticOperator for it.

I'm not sure it's necessary to call someone a cheater in a battle report because you don't like their measuring templates....Thanks for the report. I am really intrigued with this list....

@Askarius - Who called someone a cheat?

I merely mentioned I could see where every eventuality could leave him on his next turns.

A no point did I say he used them to cheat and that is a very serious allegation to make.

After I moved my ships I took a picture. Then I generally moved the templates and tidied up. Though I'm often a messy player with templates. You can see what some of my moves were, from seeing where the templates are. No one I've played has ever had any issues with those templates.

At a competitive level a good player can easily eyeball their moves without the need to look at templates... Perhaps with a bit of practice you can too Asmodi?

You may not have called him a cheater, but you did basically say you'd never play against him. That's...I mean, if that's not calling someone a cheater, you can certainly see it from there, y'know?

Also Asmodi, I had a look through my pictures and I couldn't really see where leaving my templates could give me an unfair advantage, especially over if they had been standard templates. can you please point it out to me?
