The problem with Gredo (AKA the Scum Shield Shortage)

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

Well it is no secret that Gredo was designed as a double edge sword and that is good for balance sake. The only thing is that you have to recognize how often it swings back instead of front. Sure it is great against Decimators but the question is what can you put it on. The ideal situation would be B-wing E-2 but that is rebels and Gredo is scum only.

So where can Gredo go, As of now there are only 2 ships that can take Gredo. The HWK and the Firespray. The Hawk only has one shield and putting Gredo on it can often result in disaster (see thread).

The Firespray would be the better alternative but then again compare it to the Decimator. Both the firespray and the decimator has 4 shields, however the decimator has twice as much hull so gredo would likely be flipping crits in equal measure. Worst if you come across Adm Cherenue as he converts a hit to a crit making the first and the last damage card flipped up on you, ouch!

Come to think of it the Scum doesn't have alot of shields at all. After the Big ships with their 4 shields the heaviest small ship shield is the Scum-wing with 3, then the ScumZ-95 with 2. The rest of the ships only have 1 shield.

Come to think of it I see many people talking about putting autothrusters and stealth devices on their skyks and star vipers. I have a better suggestion How about a shield upgrade. Now I know I said putting shield upgrades on unshielded ships like Tie Interceptors is a waist of points (giving my hit crit scenarios) and you are better off with hull upgrade. However on 1 shielded ships like Scyk, Star Viper and Hawks it does extremely better I would suggest that you take the shield upgrade over the hull upgrade. For ships with 2 or more it is a toss up.

So how come I am not seeing any S&V builds with shield upgrades? The Rebels and Imperials might not need it but trust me S&V does.

I'm tempted to agree with the shield upgrade suggestion. The point of shields are that they don't care about crits. However a single measly shield often do not prevent crits.

I went 3-0 yesterday with a decked out Kath with greedo and some support ships. Greedo was good for me in my games.

Kath with greedo, determination, engine, hlc, seismic, hot shot blaster

She is throwing 4 dice with every shot, plus can shoot an arc dodger once. Determination helps get rid of possible pilot crits.

shield + scyk = even more expensive for crap durability

shield + viper = auto-thrusters are just out and out better, Even canceling just one damage with auto-thrusters gives you approximately the same effect as a shield upgrade, and the auto-thrusters are permanent

Sorry, but it feels like the conversation takes a weird turn right in the middle of the OP. You start out talking about Greedo (who, as Crew, is very limited as to where he can go), and then you wrap up by concluding that Scyks need to take Shield Upgrades. It's...kind of jarring, like two different conversations that don't really go together.

I think a straight up hull/damage comparison between a Firespray and a Decimator is a mistake. There's a world of difference between two (or more) agility and none. I'd rather have Greedo on my ship when facing a Decimator, even Chiraneau, than not. He's throwing three/four against my two green, I'm through three/four against his no green at all. He's going to get critted an awful lot more than me (and that's assuming just little 1-point Greedo, not a Mangler or anything else going on), and those crits are going to add up fast.

Anybody considered putting Greedo on a Spice Runner?

Like, say, Autoblaster Turret + Dead Man's Switch + Greedo.

You'd need to run it in a list with blockers, otherwise good luck ever catching anything with a R1 turret on a HWK. But it'll usually be auto-critting whatever it can stick close to, and that's something that the opponent needs to deal with. And when they do, the HWK blows up all over them.

That is a question with dead mans switch. Will gredo flip that? I assume no because it would not be considered an attack.

What do you people expect from the guy who got himself killed?

Let's be fair, sometimes the list is less important than the person flying it.

Dace with Determination and Greedo manning the ion turret.

Everyone needs to try it once.
