FFG Playmats - Opinions and experiences

I didn't want to pay much for shipping as it was double the price for me. I asked all the local guys if they were interested. No one was. They wanted to wait until they saw me do it. So...I bit the bullet and joined for a free month of Amazon Prime for the shipping and ordered it. They are all impressed with them, though no one has bothered to order any yet. We shall see, though.

Personally, I'm quite happy with them.

Oh......wait. there was some German company that sold some in your neck of the woods. It was on a BGG thread. You want me to look it up?

Found it:

I play on a glass surface. It's slippery. The best way to mitigate that is to attach some kind of rubbery stuff at the bottom of the bases.

I bought 200 cabinet door bumpers (good for 50 ships) straight from Hettich (product code 0041843). A good thickness is 2.5mm.

Good luck if you're going that route. I almost couldn't find good sized ones anywhere, and when I did they costed waaay too much in the hardware store, which is why I ended up ordering some straight from Hettich (in my company's name even. I wonder what they thought I was going to do with them...)

It's probably not a cost effective solution, but it works and looks good. The grip is very good!

I got some clear generic rubber bumpers from Walmart. They were $1 for a pack of 20 (or 25...can't remember right now). I haven't measured the height but the base ends up just slightly raised (enough for them to make contact but not interfere with regular gameplay or using templates on the bases as normal). I use 4 of them on the small bases and 5 on the large bases (1 in the middle). I was amazed how sticky they are on a hard surface or my vinyl mat. I haven't tried it on my FFG starfield map yet.

I was tempted to go to Walmart, but I didn't want to head into Wally World just to check. Maybe it's the traffic jam around that shopping center? Or maybe I'm just lazy? :D

Rather like the FFG mat I purchased. A little more slippery and thinner than the HDC one I have but it is "official". :P

My opinion is I want them, please send some to Britain, FFG!

I do wish the Death Star was pictured looking down from above though, so that the ships were at the correct orientation relative to it, as they're look in the films.

(Edit: by which I mean: when placed on the mats the ships have their keels towards the Death Star, when in the films it's always an edge)
