Creating a Starship Rules?

By ElderKoala, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have a very sneaky suspicion I'm about to get a "...how'd you miss them? They're right on page XXX of EtoE core book." But I'm working on my first campaign, group with EotE. Trying to create a Starship because the initial selection is a little small.. but I can't seem to find them. Checked the FAQ before posting too! What am I missing? Thanks!

The trick is that there are no specific rules for creating a starship from scratch.

Such rules might be delivered in a future splatbook for Technicians, but that’s the potential in the future.

So, basically, you just make it up. Put in whatever you want. You could take other starships as a reference and say that you want your ship to have more or less crew, more or less weapons, heavier or lighter weapons, or whatever.

Or you could just take stats from another ship, change the picture you associate it with, and change the name at the top, and then you’re done.

This is a lot easier if you’re the GM. If you’re not the GM, then you’ll have to come up with something that seems plausible and then talk to your GM about it.

Meanwhile, there is a community effort to have a list of all the known stats of all the known ships that have been published in all the known FFG SWRPG books. Currently, the list is 139 ships shown at <http://swrpg.viluppo.net/transportation/starships/>.

Oh, and there are some other threads in the forum from people who’ve put their own statblocks together for various ships. LibrariaNPC is the best known forum member in this space, and has several different threads — one for freighters, one for starfighters, etc….

Use the search function at the very top of the page, and you should be able to find them.

Ah ha! Excellent! Thanks!

There's also an episode of the Order 66 podcast where they talk to one of the writers that created most of the ships in the book. They go over the general guidelines on how to spec or a ship of your own.

Hmmmm, Speaking of, I have been mulling over the idea of organic technology and living ships (not Vong) If anyone has already done this I would like to hear your ideas and how you worked it in the rules, if you don't mind sharing.

There is a recent episode of the Order 66 podcast where they discuss this very thing with Jason Marker who does most of the ships. It might help. It is like 3 podcast episodes ago or so.

Based on your nick, I am going to assume you loved Rifts. :D

I don't think that anyone has yet, at least I haven't heard any mention of them. That said, any changes would most likely be narrative in nature. Take a ship of about the right size, stats, and weapons and simply say that it is living and requires food instead of fuel. While the narrative possibilities would be different between them the stats aren't likely to change.

I would require a pre-attachment for all living vehicles for the "droid auto brain" from Fly Casual. If you have a pilot a la farscape then you might not need a hyperspace brain.
