Dice App

By barriecritzer, in X-Wing

I have heard cases of the dice app being hacked, I personally don't like it because in my mind a dice game should be played with physical dice. Could a store hosting regionals decide to ban the app if they announced it ahead of time?

let's hope not

honestly, this belief that dice games should be played with physical dice is malarky

the dice themselves are just a way to facilitate RNG. As long as there is a system in place that can properly randomize the results as directed by the game design, it really shouldn't matter what you use.

So far, I've only read of one incident on the forums so it doesn't seem widespread. I always pack a spare set of physical dice, though, because I own them and because I sometimes forget to charge my phone :P

I think it's far more likely that you'd hack your own dice app than someone else's.

TO can ban the app if they say so. Final say is final say.

As with other things i do have my own opinion on this. But, i for one really only would mind if the app. is being used in a competition setting only due do the possibility of the owner hacking their own app. Beyond that, in a casual game who cares.

No.

All FFG products are legal in a tournament. The TO does have the right to inspect all elements of a person's lists and other elements.

In a tourney I would prefer my opponent roll physical dice. Once I hear about a hacked app, right or wrong I would be wondering if tha app was hacked if it went on a hot streak.

People are so tied to their phones these days. Give it a break and roll dice.

I wouldn't mind so much, but if there were news about it being 'hacked' I'd hope the TO would keep an eye on it. After all, RNG is RNG, and dare I say that a (presumably) unhacked dice app is probably better at randomizing results than rolling die on a table / playmat. Now, if someone is constantly rolling 2 hits and a crit every attack in more than one game, that'd certainly be cause for concern :P

However, I'm inclined to agree that in a dice game, it just feels right to actually roll the dice.

Computers produce pseudo-random numbers and not "true" randomness. Hacked or not, the dice app will never be truly random. Having worked with random computer generated number I am very sceptic of the Dice app. Having heard stories about it giving players long streaks of hits and focus I think it should be subject to some form of systemized test.

Because of course there's no way to alter a dice is there... people who'd hack the add-on would also weight their dice if they really wanted to cheat.

Just because a few rotten apples cheat is no reason to go overboard and ban everyone from using the app.

I started using the app because it is convenient and I'm cheap and would rather spend my coin on more ships than extra dice

Yep, no way to alter dice... (I know you were being sarcastic Hobojebus ;) )

oh.. hold on...

A technique known to all GW players from years ago.

Place desired result face down and minimise roll.

Still, I'd rather opponents used real dice. At least you can see the shenanigans.

it's pseudo-random numbers versus pseudo-random physics

there's no such thing as a true RNG in this world because there's no true random in this world, just piles upon piles of little causes and effects we cannot properly calculate without some geniuses and a super-computer

Real dice or GTFO!

True, but I would still like to see someone do a test of the Dice App and give a rundown of the results.
