Just be careful your bad attitude going into regionals doesn't make you have a bad time. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy sort of thing; if you go to a big tournament looking for jerks and net-listers and stuff to gripe about, of course you're gonna find it.
Are regionals something an avid x-wing player should do/experience?
If I'm free I might go to one this year. If they are in May again it's not likely as that's by far my busiest month of the year each year.
I am kind of worried about how I'll do. I "thought" I was a pretty good player, but going a combined 4-4 at my two SC's is putting some doubts in my mind now.
I haven't been to a regionals (yet), but have a LOT of years in other games tournaments.
(Won GW GT once, which was hard work and I'm not talking games wise..)
So, I'm not speaking about X-wing specifically, but that level of tournament)
1. They are a LOT LESS fun now than they used to be.
The internet for one has ruined them, Nobody puts any thought into lists anymore. They google competitive<insert game here>
and copy / paste a winning list. (seen in X-Wing by the multiple Decimator/Phantom tournament winners so far this year)
Long gone are the days when you were actually fighting a list that your opponent thought up, and that's 25-30% of the battle. (40k it's like 90% lol)
2. They don't attract nice players.
You want to play a guy who will play nice and give you that 0.1mm range? Play a store championship, sure, they ARE fun nobody's too serious (in my experience so far).
Again, I haven't done regionals yet, but if they are anything like every other game out there, expect your opponent to take every advantage, even to the extent of abusing written rules. (see the Tournament FAQ, and also threads on this very forum, where players will try to get you disqualified from the tournament if your ship is broken on the way to the tournament because "its been altered".
If that's your bag, then good luck to you.
I am going to my 1st regionals soon, but am not expecting good games.
Hopefully I'm wrong, otherwise it will be my last.
If someone needs to abuse sh1t to beat me, please let me know.
I'll be happy to not waste my time and concede turn one if you're such a child winning means so much.
I really hope I'm wrong, I am enjoying X-wing, and our LFGS has done really well to build up community and earn regionals this year.
He's had decent turnouts 15-20 for each store championship, but that's set to at least double now.
I just hope its not spoilt by others coming and playing 'ruleshammer'
GW is the best and worst thing to happen to miniature gaming. Introducing so many people to it but also completely ruining it (or ruining the people for it) for a lot of them.

Thank you for prefacing your entire post that your experiences in 'ruleshammer' and other non-X-wing games have shaped your negative opinion.
I, personally, have tried very hard to foster a fun, friendly attitude amongst this community, specifically to root out WAAC players, and make X-wing a fun experience for all. So let's look specifically at your X-wing experience, at least in your own words: (sorry, I'm having trouble doing the quote thing, so I'll just copy/paste)
"Play a store championship, sure, they ARE fun nobody's too serious (in my experience so far)."
"I am enjoying X-wing, and our LFGS has done really well to build up community and earn regionals this year.
He's had decent turnouts 15-20 for each store championship"
So, the X-wing tournaments that you have been to are fun, you are enjoying X-wing, and the community is being built up to the point that your LGS has earned a Regional.
Now why has all of this happened? I contend that it is largely due to the attitudes of the players of THIS game. You see, when a store patron sees people playing X-wing, and those players are laughing out loud and having fun, that's very attractive to the onlooker. Now assume said onlooker has a wealth of experience playing 'ruleshammer' or some other highly competitive game in which the experience has been as you have described in numbers 1 and 2 above. The X-wing players are having a vastly different experience playing in a fun environment.
I guess my point is, X-wing is different because of the players and their attitudes. It's far better than the other games you have described, and I can give you numerous personal examples of good sportsmanship and behavior, even at the highest levels of competition.
So, here is a little homework for you:
Point 1. Go look up the top 32 builds at Worlds 2014. You will find very few "copy" squads. In fact, the only squads I think that were the same were Scott and Jonathon's (Panic Attack), and they developed those squads together because it was such a different and effective squad that anyone else had played before Worlds. Aside from that, there was such a diverse number of squads, even within squad types, that I can't possibly agree with your point.
I agree that there will be a few people that net-deck squads. I think we will always have that. But let me tell you a story to prove a point:
When I won Worlds in 2012, my list was out on the internet very quickly, and it was good in the Wave 1 meta. The next tournament I attended was a Kessel Run, and the very first player I played against played my exact Worlds squad (I was playing something different.) I beat him without losing a single ship. Not one. See, that is one of the beautiful aspects of this game. It's not the list you bring, it's how you fly it. That is what makes the difference.
Point 2. Go find out what Dustin Poskochil did at Worlds 2013. Then go find out what James McDonald (Sunny Ravencourt) did at Worlds 2014. Your faith in the X-wing Community will change once you see those stories. And if you wish to counter with what Richard Hsu did at Worlds 2014, I implore you to look at the community's reactions to it. These are just a few of the stories that show how much better this community is than other gaming communities out there. And i will tell you one that I know from personal experience.
The FFG judges love to judge X-wing tournaments, as opposed to other games. Normally the only reasons they get called are for a Range ruling, or possibly a Rules clarification. X-wingers don't call judges over to try and rules lawyer our positions to gain a slight advantage. We generally handle rules issues ourselves without calling over the judge, as this is a highly knowledgeable group. So I do expect you to know the rules, but I think you will find very few who abuse them. And the ones that do break the rules (like the guys that changed their damage decks) are often ostracized from the community.
So, let me end by saying, I do hope you attend at least one Regional this year, and I hope I'm there to meet you. Because I hope to personally change your attitude about this game and its community of players. You will find that this community is different than what you have experienced before. Although judging by what you have said about X-wing so far, I think you already know that.
Fly casual, my friend.
Thanks hothie. Best comment I have ever received in the entirety of my forum writing career. Haha.
I'm bummed I don't have regional close by But I am inspired to try and get my home store one! Hopefully we can make it happen so I may share this awesome experience with others.
Thanks again dude!
I attended a regional as my 4th or 5th x wing tournament. I took at list that had gotten me second place at a smaller tournament, so thought I'd do alright. I ended up pulling quite a few stupid moves with Turr, and not doing so well. Which was good cos if either myself or the guy who had driven me there had made the cut, we would have had to wait for each other...
I find x wing tournaments very fun, and while we've been hearing stories of "that guy", or the odd cheater, I feel its more do to with the influx of newer gamers, who are in it to win it. Word normally spreads around about "those players".
As mentioned above, while there are certain net lists, pretty much every rock has a paper, and in order to win consistently you'll have to know your list inside and out, and swiss pairings can always bring up some odd playing combinations.
Skip. I just went to one. Too competitive. People want to stay there for the entire day and they know that one asteroid hit could send them home, so they are less likely to admit it. Fun is considerably diminished by people who are there to WIN. This is just a dice game, take a chill pill. Stick to local events and leagues.
