First Spinoff Film has a Title, and Episode 8 in 2017!

By Engine25, in X-Wing

Wait a second, you guys are saying that the next Star Wars movie is going to be about Rogue Squadron and center on a female pilot? Every dream in my life has just come true at the same time...

Yeah it's Felicity Jones http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0428065/

I don't think I've seen anything in her IMDB list except Doctor Who and Amazing Spider-Man 2, and I don't remember her parts in either.

I'd love to see an older grizzled Wedge in this one since it sounds like it might be based around star fighter pilots.

They asked the guy who played Wedge to be in Episode 7 and he said no.

I'm thinking this film will either be about Wedge during the time of the OT, or Wedge's replacement as Rogue One sometime leading up to or around the time of episode 7.

I want to like your post for being informative, but not for the actual content. I've misplaced my pistol, so I won't shoot the messenger. ;)

I love that the "off number" movies have 30 or so years of history to play around in, so Rogue One could take place at any time from the day after Endor, up through the day before Awakens.

Given the spoiler's I've read about Episode 7, I'd be down to watch a few movies that tell us how things got there, but from the POV of people who aren't the main cast of Eps 4-6.

so Rogue One could take place at any time from the day after Endor, up through the day before Awakens.

What makes you think it/they can't be earlier than that? I'm rather assuming that "Rogue One" would focus on the creation of Rogue Squadron after the Battle of Yavin.

Rogue 1 movie plot:

Felicity Jones' character's father was KIA in the Battle of Endor by Imperial captain/commander/admiral.

She joins the Alliance when she is the appropriate age.

Becomes a fighter jockey due to her natural talent for flight.

Gets shot down on Endor when her fleet is ambsushed.

Badass Survival-Evasion-Resistance-Escape action against the Empire on Endor.

Learns of admiral responsible for personally slaying her father.

Blows up his Star Destroyer with the help of Rogue Squadron.

Becomes "Rogue One".

I am so excited for this. I hope she's an A-wing pilot, because X-wings just can't handle her brand of seat-of-the-pants, reckless dogfighting.

Is this the plot, or what you want it to be about? Because while SERE is cool, it's not dogfighting. In my opinion the movie should be:

MCG (main character girl) dogfighting TIE fighters and interceptors for 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Then roll credits.

lol just my hopeful and empty wishes, I'll edit in a disclaimer

I am very much hoping that the movie is exactly as you say- but! "Rogue One" could be about Han Solo as a "rogue" and "scoundrel", and Felicity Jones could be playing his love interest as Princess Leila. But maybe they have yet to cast Han Solo, and so haven't announced him yet.

I don't _want_ the movie I've just described. I just don't want day 1 excitement over 2 data points to be turned into a dream come true- and then Dashed when data points 3-50 come out. Even a good movie would be Rendared worse by comparison to what we wanted.

Sure, I get that. But I'm going to stay optimistic. I'd much rather be happily anticipating a badass girl A-wing pilot shooting down TIE interceptors in epic space dogfights than be bummed about a lame romance. We all know Star Wars has not typically done romance well.

SHWAAAAAAAAAA The Han and Leia dynamic is great.

Wont ever happen the rebels are totally against women fighting on the front lines, sexist pigs.

This probably virtually guarantees an X-wing v Tie Fighter or Alliance remake.

Yeah, I remember the way that happened in every movie where they _didn't_ borrow the Norwegian army to play the Rebel Army.

From what I can tell, though Disney seems to be making a point of having more women center stage in their bigger properties*. There's a throwaway line in the first NuCanon book confirming that there are female stormtroopers. Oddly enough, it doesn't confirm that the female in question is actually human, though.

*I'm excited, for instance, about the prospect of a Captain Marvel movie- Carol Danvers has been kind of awesome.

I'm just going to watch this movie in my mind for the next 120 minutes.

That could also be interesting. I do somehow think that's a time period set aside for the comics, thought I could be totally wrong.

No more Ewoks... Lets move on from Endor.

Star Wars: Rogue 1

Star Wars: Movie about pilots

Star Wars: Top Gun

Awesome. Can't wait for the volley ball scene.

Anyone not wishing for the canonisation of Lieutenant Kettch should be court-martialed for willfully and maliciously attempting to lower morale.

At the least, that is apparently the path that some of the new books will venture down. http://makingstarwars.net/2015/03/first-plot-synopsis-for-star-wars-aftermath/

The other big rumor that has stuck around, besides a Rogue Squadron movie, was a bounty hunter movie. Could the title be deliberately misleading? Sounds like Disney's style, to be honest. "Rogue One" could be like a "Public Enemy Number One" sort of situation?

Likely? No. Possible? Why not?

Blech - probably more Rebel Propaganda.

Why can't there be an 'Obsidian One' movie, with Howlrunner as the main character?

(Kidding! I'm super excited!)

((And I'm going to troll anyone who starts making fun of this movie calling it Rouge One.))

Well, I'm kinda working on the assumption that this is now the "official" title of the film whose working title we knew to be "Red 5".

What leads me to believe that this is not about Rogue Squadron, is that it's called "Rogue One," not "Rogue Leader." It's been awhile since I've read through any the of books, the squadrons would refer to each other as Rogue Three and Rogue Nine and whatnot, but then it was Rogue Leader, not Rogue One (or Three / Nine / Leader for short).

So, this leads me to believe that it won't be directly tied into Rogue Squadron. It could be interpreted as a pronoun similar to Rogue Guy or Rogue Dude. Which means it's totally open ended as far as what it is going to be about.

Even if my logic is wrong and it ends up being about Rogue Squadron, it doesn't change the fact that for now, it's logical to assume it's not guaranteed to be about Rogue Squadron.

What leads me to believe that this is not about Rogue Squadron, is that it's called "Rogue One," not "Rogue Leader."

That is a valid point, but is part of what makes me think it is about the formation of the squadron. Because of the basic naming convention, "Rogue One" implies Rogue Leader, but it also implies "The first member of Rogue Squadron", ie, the founder of the squadron, and producers like titles with double meanings like that.

I admit though, that I am likely being led by the earlier speculation when the working titles were leaked. Some site had this to say about the "Red 5" film

Red Five sounds the most interesting to me. It was Luke Skywalker’s call sign so it could be about another Skywalker, but what if it’s about the Rogue Squadron in general? We could see what Wedge Antilles and company do after they destroy the Death Star. That has incredible potential for action, drama, heroics – all the great ingredients Star Wars mixes so well.

so I could merely be projecting.

Fair enough, you've established 'reasonable doubt'. However, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they meant Rogue Leader, but the marketing staff told them that 'Rogue One' works better as a title.
