You can mix that up a bit too. Instead of silver, you could choose a different colour for some of them. This could represent that the ship was first painted a different colour, and could be used for further effect by choosing a contrasting colour, say blue for urifici's ships as an example. You could easily go for something more like a grey so it looks like 'primer'. Obviously lots of ships are some shade of grey, so that would be fairly common.
