The Beanstalk

By Seboss, in Android

I've read the Mars trilogy from Kim Stanley Robinson that was the first sci-fi novel (for me) that presents the concept of the space elevator in such details.
Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out that Android uses such an elevator in its setting.

But something bugs me. From the rulebook page 17:

The Beanstalk consists of five locations stretching between the Earth and the Moon. They are the Root, the Midway, Castle Club, the Challenger Memorial Ferry, and Starport Kaguya. The two ends of the Beanstalk are the Root (on the Earth) and Starport Kaguya (on the Moon) .

Err have the Moon stopped orbiting Earth at some point in the future? Because if it haven't, the Beanstalk just doesn't make any sense.

Looking forward to your wild theories on the subject :D

Maybe it's a very long, flexible elevator. And, you know, it just kinda wraps around the earth every day circle. And once a year, a couple of Haas-Bioroids have to unrwap it.

Or maybe they just finished building it and didn't think of it. Like... small calculation error? :P

EDIT:

I did some research. The end of the Beanstalk is not buried in the moon's surface. Instead, it is linked on a geostationary sattelite - the space station. From there, you can transfer to the moon via space ferry. While this does mean it is easier to transfer on certain times of the month (no, not THOSE), it still alleviates a lot of the energy needed to get an object into space at all times.

You can only go at night.

That's why for the detectives: Daytime phase is performed 5 to 9 instead of 9 to 5. The city never sleeps.
