Jan Ors crew interaction with Recon Specialist

By Wretch, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The card reads "Once per round, when a friendly ship at Range 1-3 performs a focus action or would be assigned a focus token, you may assign it an evade token instead."

I want to know does the Jan crew card give a ship with recon specialist 2 evades? Can she affect multiple ships in a round?

I think the first question has been clarified as - you only get 1 evade - not in the latest FAQ yet

as for the second question the clue is in the wording you quoted - check the first 3 words of the card

in fact the first three words apply to both questions, if you changed two focus to evade you would be doing it more than once in a round

I think it could be argued that the 2 focus from recon arrive simultaneously so Jan can act on them both - but you'd be pushing the interpretation pretty far for that I think :)

recon specialist reads "When you perform a focus action, assign 1 additional focus token to your ship."

I am relatively new to the game, but the language of recon specialist makes it seem like it's simultaneous, but the timing might be governed by another rule I am not aware of. If it wasn't simultaneous wouldn't the card read, "after you perform a focus action assign 1 additional focus token" or something similar.

Edit: I think I understand. It hinges on "you award it an evade token".

The way I see it, since Recon Specialist says "When performing a focus action", it triggers at the same time as the normal result of the focus action.

The rules state that, when you have multiple things that trigger simultaneously, you get to decide which order to execute them in. You therefore have the choice of assigning the "normal" focus token or the "extra" focus token (from Recon Specialist) first - not that it makes much of a difference, hehe.

Now, when you add in the effect of Jan Ors, you can trigger it at 3 moments:

  1. When you take the focus action: in this case, taking the focus action gives you 2 tokens you need to assign (an evade from Jan Ors that replaces the "normal" focus token and the "additional" focus from Recon Specialist)
  2. When you receive the "normal" focus token, you can assign an evade token instead
  3. When you receive the "extra" focus token, you can assign an evade token instead

So to be clear you believe the interaction would yield 2 evade tokens.

Only if Jan Ors wasn't once per turn.

would you really want that though?

Consider how much fun falcons would be if they could take 3 evade tokens and get another guaranteed one from threepo per turn.

Fun

Can you honestly see FFG FAQing in favour of that ?

Wretch and Funkleton, you misunderstood me...

I'm saying there are 3 different moments where you could choose to resolve Jan Ors's effect.

In no way did I mean to imply that you could it at all 3 moments.

Edit: If you look carefully, you'll notice that resolving Jan's effect in the first trigger I mention means the second trigger never even happens.

Now to mix it up a bit. We have Kyle piloting a HWK, with Jan as crew. Jake flies nearby.

At the beginning of combat Kyle assigns a focus token to Jake. You trigger Jan to turn it into an evade. Does Jake's ability still trigger?

Jake is never dealt a focus token, therefore his ability does not trigger.

Now, if Jake performed a focus ACTION and receives a Janified evasion, he still gets the boost or barrel-roll.
