Radical Campaign

By NuFenix, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Now, whilst it may be better waiting for the Radical book to get released, I'm far to impatient and got the urge to run a Radical campaign now. If I wait, then there will be many others doing so, and I think it will make me lasier in how I go about things.

Here is the character creation I am planning for the game - I am curious what others think of it.

* Characters begin with 4000xp, making them Rank 5 careers.
* Characters will have 4000 thrones to buy all their equipment with, regardless of income values. So a Noble will start with the same money as a Scum. This is to make you all even in terms of what gear you start with.
* Characters will have the opportunity to purchase Elite Advances on specific skills and Talents, which MUST come from their final 1000xp, meaning it counts towards their expenditure in Rank 5. Each of the following Elite Advances cost 200xp, but also D5 Insanity AND D5 Corruption. No player is required to purchase these advances, so do not feel pressured in any way.
- Forbidden Lore [Cults]
- Forbidden Lore [Daemonology]
- Forbidden Lore [Heresy]
- Forbidden Lore [Mutants]
- Forbidden Lore [Warp]
- Forbidden Lore [Xenos]
- Speak Language [Xenos - Pick one]
- Exotic Weapon Proficiency [Pick one]
- Sorcerer Talent

Are there others that the community feels may be suitable to know? Do you think the costs are too high? Is the restriction on only being able to buy them at Rank 5 balanced?

Currently I have not settled on whether the game is focusing towards Ordo Malleus or Ordo Xenos - Instead I am letting the players decide, so that they can tailor their characters towards it, due to the experience they would have acquired.

On top of the equipment they buy, I will be giving them equipment appropriate for the task they will be pitted against. So if they pick OM, they will get equipment based on dealing with Daemons and Psykers, but also tomes which can help them on certain Lore checks, such as the Calixian Black Grimoire, for example [i don't understand why it is classed as Ordo Xenos, when Malleus get alot of mileage out of it]. Whereas if they pick OX, I will offer them Xenos tech, such as weapons, scanners, data-files, and so forth.

I want to allow the players the chance to get what I consider fun, and novel items, that they often don't get the chance normally, due to a low xp level, or they just don't suit the game they play elsewhere. Sure it might seem powerful, but I can balance that by what kind of enemies they face, in terms of combat, but also how far can I tempt them/further corrupt them.

Is there any advice or tips my fellow GMs can offer me, in doing such a campaign? I would greatly appreciate it, as well as the opinions of non-GMs, as to what they would want/expect from such a styled game.

I thank you for your time in advance.

What do you plan to do that need the pc to start with 4000xp?
And with ALL the Forbidden LoreSkills available to EVERYONE?

Do really want to start -without- all this juicy little extras, new rules, new characters and new equipment that will be ´part of the "RADICALS HANDBOOK"?

Mainly, by starting them at such a high XP value, it means they have more Skills and Talents they can use, which often aren't available at lower XP games.

I know that whilst XP increases, it is only their equipment which truely determins how potent the enemies are that they face. But they're Acolytes, not Inqusitorial Storm Troopers, so their job won't be to go in to a hot zone, shoot every heretic nearby. Sure they will get into a fight, but against small amounts of enemies, due to ambushes, the people they meet, places they go to, and so on.

That isn't all of the Forbidden Lores. Five of them aren't on the list, and so far three out of my six players haven't taken any, although the Tech-Priest did take Malygrisian Tech Heresy, as it fits the style I am going for.

When the Radical's Handbook is released, I want to let the contents slowly appear, instead of players feeling overwhelmed with the new options before them. Plus, if everyone can't get hold of the book [This is an Online game], then they may feel they are at a disadvantage, whereas nif only I use it, they are all even.

Okay... my questions wasn´t really that clear.

That you wan´t them to be "stronger" was quiet clear, but what are they supposed to do in you campaign? Hunt a vile xenos cult? Help there Inquisitor find bind a demon into a host? If you already decided that they need to be "stronger", me guesses that you already have a "certain something in mind". That ´s what I meant with "what are they supposed to do?".

The info would be helpfull in giving a more constructive comment about your "starting". If you say (for example) they are to explore the ruins of an xenos civilization on some airless moon in the only one knowing about are said to be are survivors of the MeriTech-Clans, I would advise to add more "Space Skill" into your offering.

My guess is, that perhaps 2000 xp and a "Campaigne Elite Advance table" tailored to the needs of your campaign could work better than simply grossing out 4000 XP and thrones.
