Figure Tokens Illegal in Tournaments? Really?

By macmastermind, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

From the tournament rules (pg.5): Players cannot use the figure tokens provided in the Imperial Assault core game in sanctioned tournaments.

So, no RGC, Han, Chewie, Rebel Troopers, etc... At least until the figures are available, AND I buy them. Wow, this seems a little stupid...

"On the boat" does not mean a short delay, either...

Thoughts?

They're shipping right now, expected on the 20th.

Honestly, even though they're in the core, they're not as useful as they're going to be when their expansions are available. The expansions have the figure specific cards that make them better.

Well, that does make a difference. I'm still seeing 'boat', but I trust you. I'm the IT guy who refuses to troubleshoot his own browser. Get enough of that crap while I'm at work. lol

So, ok - prepare to buy a ton of stuff very soon - check!

Thanks, Xero.

AND I buy them.

Not being able to buy them is one thing. But unless there's some sort of official tournament happening soon, something like the X-Wing's Store Championship, then to me this is the same as proxies sorta. Each TO could allow or not allow them as they see fit, by simply not enforcing that rule.

But once they are in stores, to me this is no different than the rules you normally see for proxy models. Most games require that you use the correct model, so that makes sense they wouldn't want people using tokens, even if they're ones FFG produced.

I'm the same way :) I still see them as being on the boat, but don't want to bother clearing my cache and the rest... I'm also a IT guy who fixes this stuff all day long and doesn't want to bother fixing my own crap.

FFG knew when Wave 1 would be ready, that's why they waited until March to put out the tournament rules. In a week and a half, this'll be a moot point.

If I were a TO, and running a tournament before Wave 1 was released, I would allow the tokens.

Yeah, it's probably good to check with your TO before the tourney just in case, but I can't imagine a TO disallowing tokens for figures which were included in the base game and which you would own if they were available.

But then, if I were a TO I'd allow people the option of playing on printed maps if they had them and didn't want to use their tiles for each match.

I'll definitely be buying them - it's really just the spirit of the thing I'm talking about. Even the proxy rules really just allow overly anal opponents to whine and win at the official tourneys - channeling more cash into FFG's pocket as a result. I've got nothing against them making their money for a great product (which they are good at making), but if that's the intent of these types of rules, it seems a little over-the-top...

On the other hand, it's an official FFG event, FFG decides what's legal, end of story - I get that, and I'm good with it.

...and I didn't realize they were so close to shipping when I first posted anyway, so...

thx all.

I guess it might have been put in place to help against someone using the tokens for the rebel troopers as another activation after the figures come out. I don't know though. We have cards for them, they are official FFG release so to me they should always be legal. I know most players would much rather use the figures, but a starting player down the road should also be able to play in a tourney with just the starter set.

if you allowed them after the ally and villain packs then people have no need to buy multi packs. Just get two cores and one of every and your good. This way at least you need to buy multi.

This also helps store credit tournaments. This gets players to buy more than just their store credit. I know most people are into many games now a days but back in the day with minis it really helped stores. I will be getting two of the sabs and troopers but save the x3 or x4 for tournaments

You can do that. You can easily build a 40 point list with either Imperial or Rebels using just the models that come in the starter set.

You're naturally a bit more limited, but that's kind of the nature of a starter set, to get you started, not provide you all the options the game has.
