New to Imp Assault

By UnfairBanana, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Picked it up on sale at Hastings with a load of store credit, and we played our first game tonight.

So, a couple questions:

1st. Surge. This is canceled by the dodge results on the black/white die, right? What if they use a surge ability to add a damage? Can that be canceled by blocks? By dodge?
(I'm not sure which is which between dodge and evade right now; here I'm referring to the one that doesn't cancel the whole attack)

2nd. What're the numbers in the top corner of the deployment group cards?

3rd. HOw does deployment work? We've only played through the tutorial so far, so maybe it's covered elsewhere, but do all units just start on the board, or is there a means of deploying them?

1. All dice are rolled at the same time. surges are cancelled by doge results the circle symbol on the black dice. any left over surges not cancelled can be spent on damage buffs, or other surge abilities.

2. When playing the campaign, the imperial player will increase a number of threat between rounds. this threat can be spent to deploy units based on the large number being their deployment cost. some cards with more than one unit, they will have a smaller number next to the deployment cost. this threat can be spent to recruit reinforcements to that card.

in skirmish mode, the larger number is the point cost of the unit for your 40 point squad

3. some campaigns have a special set up, which is pretty straight forward when you read through it, some missions you start with units on the board. otherwise, you are able to deploy units before the beginning of the next round. I don't have the order in front of me, but at the end of a round you gain threat, increase round by one and then can deploy from cards in your hand, and heroes and cards ready.

hope this helps, others will be able to assist my ramblings.

Very helpful indeed. I was hesitant to buy this game at first, but am very glad I did. I was always jealous of W40K because they get to make awesome scenery...and now... what have I done?!

2nd. What're the numbers in the top corner of the deployment group cards?

Spidey NZ explained it pretty well. But to put it in X-Wing terms...

That's the cost of the unit, same as a X-Wing costs 21 points, a Storm Trooper unit costs 6. But in Imp Assault you have 40 points rather than 100.

When playing a campaign you get threat as was mentioned, think of this as squad points that you can spend during the game, if you're the Imperial player.

On some cards like the Stormtrooper cards, there's 2 numbers a big one and a little one, I think they're 6 and 2. The big number is how much the unit costs to deploy, the small number is how much it costs to reinforce that unit.

You reinforce by bringing back a "dead" model and deploying it near an active deployment point. Those are the colored target lock looking icons on the map image. So say you have a stormtrooper unit that starts with 3 models, and the heroes kill 2 of them. You could spend 4 threat to put 2 of them back on the map.

If a unit is destroyed, by all models being 'killed' you can spend threat equal to that big number to deploy it again.
