Is This List Too Obnoxious?

By CruzinToVictory, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I played this list with a friend tonight, and it was a blast to fly, but it might be just a tad too annoying. My goal was to make a list that can dart all over the board and still be effective. I deployed all four ships at different points of the map just to essentuate that idea. At the same time, it's very defensive, and my opponent was (understandably) getting rather frustrated about not being able to hit anything.

So I ask: Is this list too obnoxious for casual play? Is it viable for tournament play? Seems gimmicky, but man it's fun to fly!

Ibitsum (28+6)

Sensor Jammer (4)

Ellusiveness (2)

Tarn Mison (23+2)

R7 Astromech (2)

Gemmer (22 + 3)

A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Refit (-2)

Autothrusters (2)

Predator (3)

Prototype Pilot (17 -2)

Refit (-2)

Total: 99

Prototype is a blocker, and the other three are a PITA to hit while still having decent offense.

Thoughts?

My concern here is that while maybe frustrating, I'm not scared at all of the ships here. There's a not unreasonable chance that your blocker and Gemmer could die to focus fire from something like 2 HLC ships before they even get to range 1 to do any of their annoying things, and even if the low HP ships don't get picked off quickly, there's just not that much firepower here to speak of.

Obviously the best way to see if this is that bad to fight would be to fly against it, which I cannot do, but I feel somewhat confident that with a little bit of focus fire my 2 HLC Defender build would just shred ships one at a time, without being punished very hard for taking their time to wear down whichever target presented itself.

Too obnoxious for casual play really just depends on who you're playing against and how easily they get frustrated. I would be in a state of giddy awe at the annoying power of the list I think, but I don't know that this is going to do much work at a tournament.

EDIT: What sort of list was your opponent flying?

you know how the saying goes: "if you have to ask..."

But I've looked over your list and found no fat turrets. Therefore, it could empirically be worse.

My opponent flew two Royal Tie Interceptors with outmanuever and Autothrusters, and Rexler with a HLC and Lone Wolf.

I blocked one interceptor with the Prototype but everyone else was too far away to get a good shot. After that I boosted and barrel rolled around blocking and making sure I got shots. He did hit the Prototype and Tarn a couple times (got them both down to 1 hull), but I was then able to fly off with them and reposition to avoid them being blown up.

Ibitsam is CRAZY tanky for a 1 agility ship. The Prototype is actually the one who took out the first Interceptor (Tarn took out the other). After the second interceptor went down he conceded.

Between Predator, any unused TL for Tarn, and Ibitsam rerolling, it does pretty consistent damage.

My opponent flew two Royal Tie Interceptors with outmanuever and Autothrusters, and Rexler with a HLC and Lone Wolf.

I'm going to try to be diplomatic here, but I would avoid reading too much into your game, since this is not exactly strong opposition. In fact, I believe your opponent's squad is very weak. Squints without PtL are basically overpriced TIE Fighters, and Rexlar is... well, I personally feel he's next to useless in standard play.
I'm afraid don't believe your list would be very tournament viable. With only two 3-dice attacks you don't really have the firepower to seriously threaten a fat turret, and with low PS across the board arc dodgers will run rings around you.
That being said, it's a perfectly fine casual list and it does look like fun to fly. I just wouldn't go taking it to a tournament you're serious about winning.

Personally, I hold R7 Liam Mison and Predator, Truly Outrageous Gemmer to be competitive builds (though I don't think he needs auto-thrusters, i.e even less of a reason for the opponent to shoot him :P). Smelly fish lady is another matter.

I've tried making Ibs work, but it's been an exercise in futility. She's just morbidly expensive, and without the sheer utility (or hilarious fun) that Farlander brings. While Tarn and Gemmer don't stray too far from decent costs for their respective offensive potentials, Ibs just never seemed worth it to me.

If you're looking for obnoxiously durable B-wings, you don't need to look any further than the Blue Squadron pilot :P They've got large ship stats on small base packages and you can fit two of them (+5 points of upgrades, so FCS on both for a 99 point squad total before removing gemmer's thrusters) for the price of Ibs and the prototype. They might not look like much next to all the upgrades, but believe me B-wings are some of the most efficient cost per durability ships out their and the more you have the more difficult your list becomes to chew through.

You could also take a gander at Luke Skywalker. You wouldn't believe how much his ability extends his lifespan until you put him on the table himself. He's like an inverse Mison (works against lots of little attacks versus one giant one) but with the added benefit of an EPT slot (Lone Wolf + R2-D2 make for an incredibly infuriating to kill late game ship)

But if you want to be truly obnoxious without being a boring ******* (i.e turrets), you have to start over and design a squad around Biggs ^_^

There are some really fun rebel combos.

Honestly ibtisam sporting an HLC and opportunist is nutty fun. Sensor jammer.

Wes Hanson with vi.

There's also wedge R2F2 stealth device predator plus Kyle HWK

That is just funny.

And of course as others have said. Luke lone wolf r2d2. Gross.

You want to know a list that's too obnoxious even for tournament play? 4 B Wings, 4 Tacticians. Good luck winning against that with anything except 8 TIE Fighters. 5 Green Squadrons with Wingman maybe? Even then, 4 b's > 5 a wings.

Your list is just fine, seems fun. The lists that are the most fun to fly aren't A+ lists, but solid B or B- lists that have a lot of synergy and wacky but effective abilities, like 5 z's and Etahn, or 5 TIE Fighters and a Defender, or 3 PtL Red Royal Guard Inyerceptors and Yorr in the Lambda. K turn towards the lambda, ditch the stress, the PtL for two actions lol.

Fair points all around. I guess the main thing is that this was my first time flying A-Wings well (darting across the board, successful blocks, etc) and it was fun. Now I'm trying to make them work :)

Nah, not too obnoxious. It has a high defense potential, but not the PS rating to also arc dodge. I played Soontir(PTL, target computer, Autothrusters), Turr (VI, stealth device, autothrusters) and Carnor (PTL, autothruster, shield upgrade). Now that was an annoying list to hit ;).

I'd run Stealth device on Gemmer instead of ATs. He wants to be in range 1 of enemies so ATs will be less useful. With SD he gets 5 agility at range 3 and 1. Harder to hit than a Phantom.

Why didn't I think of that!

EDIT: I know why; Because I was too anxious to use shiny new toys!

I'd actually recommend no mods on gemmer

he's more annoying when your opponent doesn't want to focus him and he's only 23 points

trust me, no one in their right mind is going after gemmer first when there's a 3 dice ship on your side of the table. If they go for gemmer, great! That's less heat on your ships that matter :P
