I have a question about core rulebook. Does it have strong smell? I would know due to health concerns, full color books sometimes have rather strong paint odor which I can't take. But FFG board game rulebooks are odor free, and I would like to know if these RPG books use similiar printing techniques, which would be fine.
Edited by HaretonQuestion about physical qualities of the rulebook
Never noticed any smell at all.

I can honestly say this is not a thought that ever crossed my mind. I will say there is not one that I have noticed, but that may or may not be a useful thing to you as I have yet to sniff my books purposely.
I would say your best bet is to send a email to FFG and ask if they are printed in the same factory. If they are then it is a good chance you will be fine. The only other thing I can think to suggest is drop by your local shop and check out them or other FFG RPG Corebooks.
I also have not noticed a smell and I hope that helps..
Opening up Fly Casual there's a mild smell when my nose is about 3cm from the page... It's my newest book, my Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook is my oldest purchase and it doesn't give off any sort of odour.
When the AoR beta was first released, someone posted complaining about a very peculiar smell, but that was the only complaint I heard.
Edited by kaosoeThis question could be turned into some fun, all you guys smelling your books LOL...but seriously I just sniffed my new copy (about a month old) of AoR it has a slight smell to it but not nearly as bad as the smells I remember from the 80s. My eyes used to water opening my 3rd edition AD&D books.

God I remember that!
I only got the new book smell, but that went away in a week.

I used to LOVE that new book smell from the 80ies. Made me happy every time I bought a new piece of imagination kindling.

That was me, and not so much a complaint but an observation - it did have a strong printer press smell. Now, 1.5 years on, not so much - and none of the Core Rules have ever had Printers Stench about them.
Thanks for answers, what a great community.
The only smell I get from my SWRPG books is that of awesome.
I too am sensitive to certain smells and while the books DO have a smell when they're fresh off the presses, the odor dissipates very quickly. I don't smell it in the normal course of reading them.
Sorta. I know what you mean about sensitive to smells. I have allergies and get where your coming from. Strong smell? Sorta. You'd have to have your head pretty close of your reading it you'll smell that fresh book smell. It's not as strong as some books I've gotten.
My "fresh from the factory" books do have that "new book smell" but not the horrid "toxic unwhiped hazmat demon butthole" smell, and the new book smell does go away after a day or two.
It's also worth mentioning that my cat used my copy of Far Horizons as a litter box (anyone want a copy of Far Horizons? Only pay shipping!) and when I got the replacement that had been sitting on a shelf for a while it had no odor at all. so if you're not in a huge hurry you can just give the books some time to air out.
I think the odor coming off the new books is the ink still "drying" for lack of a better term. It goes away given time, but it is certainly a lot longer than just a few days. These books were printed in China, sent via boat to the US, then shipped to distributors and finally to stores for purchase. That means they've had weeks, if not months, to lose the odor. My EotE core book has lost the smell it started with, but the 3 new books I received several weeks back still stink when I open them up.
The crb definitely has a scent. It isn't strong and on the stink/deliciouos scale of aromas, it's pretty neutral. Not offensive or unpleasant at all. I've been told I have an amazing sense of smell, though, so take that into account.
I have a very good sense of smell (objective evidence of this - don't ask). The books I have (about eight of them) have a slight printers smell about them, but it is mild. Less than the smell from running my colour laser printer for ten sheets. I'm familiar with the phenomenon you are talking about and I think the EotE books are significantly below this level. You're unlikely to notice it, imo.

Heh it is not possible to check it out in a shop, since in Poland role playing games almost died after D&D third edition came to an end. Long ago you could find rulebooks even in normal bookstores, for example Deadlands or Earthdawn, then only specialized shops carried them, especially d20 ones, but now even hobby shops disposed of RPGs and remained board game centers. Only thing left is a one big online shop that imports huge selection of games in good price, good enough that it doesn't even have any competition.
Edited by HaretonAll of the books I've purchased have that faint "new book" smell to them. Nothing I'd call overpowering though. The new book smell usually dissipates in short order upon use of the book.
Now the issues with the EotE core book coming loose from it's spine is a whole different matter. I find that more annoying then any scent I've picked up from the books.
Well, I bought Beginner Game first, and the Adventure Book smells bad enough to prevent me from reading, I hope core rulebook is better?
I think it's because the box was hermetically sealed, but the books aren't in foil I guess, so they shouldn't smell.

Here's a link to that discussion. And I agree, this was the only complaint I've heard as well.

I bought core rulebook and it stinks severly, no amount of ventilating will help here. I wasted my money, though it's very beautiful book.
Edited by HaretonThe who, the what now?
It seems that there is a smell that a few people get a whiff of and can't stand. I just smelled my CRB and it just smells like a book to me.

Open it up and leave it out with various pages exposed. The smell will go away.
