PSA: All Y-wings are BTLs
A problem? No. OCD sent into overdrive every time I read it? Hell yes.
Personally I find your cavalier attitude to debilitating mental disorders more disturbing.
It's neither a perjorative usage (which would certainly be bad) nor intended as such and is widely used in that manner in everyday life and on these forums.
But if it bothers you, I won't use it that way on the forums again. I'm not the type to continue to say something that upsets someone because "I have a right to".
Edited by TIE Pilotsee it's not a problem
no one cares that all y-wings are BTL variants because the only BTL terminology that matters in this game is the BTL-A4 title.
I care...

Oh, save us from the internet offence brigade.
This...this really happened?

Well, we haven't had an article in a while, things are pretty boring.
In the context of this game Slave-1 isn't a ship, it's a title. FFG did something weird when they named that expansion and the Millennium Falcon expansion. but that's beside the point.
Don't forget the Aggressor comes in the IG-2000 expansion.
A lot of us are gamers that just play the game because it's a good game. Not everyone here is a Simpsons comic book guy level fan that's looking for full immersion when playing or talking on the forums. My personal rule is only one Star Wars quote allowed per game, after that it gets obnoxious.
From what I've seen, most people that shorthand it do it as "BTL title" instead of BTL/A4, and since there's only one BTL title in this game there's no chance of confusion there.

I forsee lots of party invites in your future.

Seems a bit odd for him to play a Star Wars miniatures game. It may be fun but it's soaked in theme, if you hate the theme that's got to hamper your enjoyment of it.

It's only really as soaked in theme as you want it to be. Ultimately, the game is just a collection of numbers and attractive miniatures that get pushed around a table. It isn't like knowledge of the Star Wars Universe is even helpful in playing this game. I'd almost think that being too much of a fan might get in the way of enjoying the game sometimes. When pilots or ships aren't quite right that can be annoying, especially if it is a ship or pilot that is a personal favorite. If you don't care about the Star Wars IP, none of the fluff matters and you couldn't care less that Kir Kanos isn't fit to put on the table. I'm mean he's only he biggest badass Royal Guard that ever was, why shoudn't the generic RGP be better and cheaper than he is?
If the game would have been Star Trek, BSG, or even just Generic Spaceship themed we probably would have had less trouble getting him to play his first game. Once he had played he was hooked.
I agree. My biggest hurdle in the first few matches was forgetting what I thought I knew about Star Wars starfighters and learning how to play the game as it is, rather than trying to utilize tactics as though I were playing a 2-D flight sim.
The fluff text on the GSP mentions the BTL-A4. That doesn't contradict what I wrote. As far as I know, there are no other BTL designations other than "BTL-A4" used in the context of this game.
My nitpicky thing is referring to Y-wings as GSPs. It makes sense in this context since you were replying to a poster that said gold squadron pilot, but I see it fairly regularly. Considering the generics are Gold and Gray, GSP tells us not enough.
I call them Lucy. Should you care? No you shouldn't.

people fly grey squadron pilots?
Since we're delving into EU-based nitpickery, I'd like to point out that just using 'BTL' to refer to the Y-Wing isn't specific enough, as it shared that designation with the K-Wing (BTL-S8).
Maybe 'BTL' is just a Koensayr internal designation for the general type of starfighter (Bomber Torpedo Light?), with the BTL-A[x] being a single-seater and the BTL-S[x] being twin-seaters. Maybe the K-Wing was designated the BTL-S8 to convince reluctant politicians that they weren't paying for a new starfighter, but an upgraded version of an old one (hey, it worked with the F-18 E/F Super Hornet).
All Y-Wings are BTLs, but not all BTLs are Y-Wings.

Oh yeah, I'd say my love of Star Wars actually impedes my chances at victory... because I tend to fly pilots I like from the mythology, not necessarily the ones with optimum builds. But it's fine, because I'd rather have fun flying a sub-par list full of names i care about, rather than always win.
I thank the OP. Theme is a huge part of the game for me and the fact that FFG are being accurate keeps me interested. I had forgotten about the designation, so that's great info.
However I respect that people who are more into the gaming side are always going to abbreviate and not care and why should they. You guys can be loose about the names if it's useful to you, who cares!
I hope that the mechanics and design continue to reflect lore also.
FFG... Please also consider the BTL A4 LP "Longprobe", with it's enhanced sensors!

I don't get it... which of the y-wing's comes with bacon?
Not to be a tool but this thread is pointless. People call the ship a Y-wing when they use it in a game. Even if they put the title card on the ship, they still call it a Y-wing when using it during a game. Even if they are using 2 Y-wings in their list, 1 with the title and 1 without it, I could almost guarantee they refer to them as either Y-wing # whatever ID token they have on it or by the name of the unique pilot card the ship is representing.
this thread is pointless.
And now you've discovered the secret to all of the PSA type posts.
