Institute of Learning

By Peroxis, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

OK think I will make a thread every week to ask peoples experiences/opinions with different Talents etc.
So then people can search when they are confused/curious about how to incorporate whatever things

What Institutes of Learning have you or your PCs encountered and do you/they have good or bad standing with the institute?

My players have done some work for a major Outer Rim university, and one of them (Technician/Outlaw Tech/Archaeologist) owes them some Obligation for sponsoring an expedition into a stellar cloud. The players are pretty much the University's go-to guys for purposes of moving stuff from A to B.

I ran "Dead Man’s Hand" at a con. Its a stand-alone adventure by Christopher Witt.

"Dead Man’s Hand involves a group of heroes who comprise one of the “acquisition” arms of a well-known university in the core worlds, braving the wilds of space and mysteries of the past to gather knowledge and exhibit-quality relics for their patron institution. Often working “under the table”, they specialize in going into dangerous locales and sometimes skirting local laws and customs to investigate history and bring back their finds."

Most of my players' characters wouldn't know an Institute of Higher Learning if it threw a Frat Party at them.

Well, maybe the new Engineer but she hasn't finished her back story yet.

there's one in jewel if yavin... I can't remember which one. it's been too long since I played it. I ran a mission where the PCs were exploring a long lost civilization and were racing against archeologists. one of my group went to the university of correlia to get some information, then later, one of them started attending that college.it was funny, because she came from a primitive world, didn't have a sense if humor and war like in culture, and anytime someone would mention the uni, she would put get fist in the air, and say, go warthogs. in my last campaign, the university of corellia was one of my players obligation. he did the.same thing. r&d. one of my players was a professional swoop racer and was on a team. so the R&D of the company the got their swoops from. drall breakfast club. a group of 12 learned drall living on corellia whom got together every Monday to eat and gossip. the primitive warrior was invited to join because one of her teachers was a member and thought she would be a fascinating addition. lastly, in my last two campaigns, the bounty Hunters guild.in one, the group was a part of it. in the other, the group had killed a large dangerous beast and sold it's body to them as a decoration, so the bonus due helped them get more money for it.

while I've gotten many miles from this talent, I can understand if other gms haven't. this isn't like a combat or hacking talent that the GM kinda has to work to put on. personally, I found it to be worth it. again, ymmv

Many of my characters have attended one as part of their backstory but none of my FFG characters have interacted with one during their adventures.I had an old D6 Star Wars character who earned a doctorate of engineering and was later made superintendent of his government's Naval Academy while an active character though.

My Clawdite F&D Mystic/Seer is actually Jal Shey and not Jedi, and s/he studied at the Lycaeum.

At least, that’s what it says in the character backstory. ;)

I think one thing that can be confusing about the 'respected scholar' talent.

Is it says add a boost to when interacting. So does this apply to any interaction? Where is the line. Do they gain a boostwhen sabotaging the institute?

If the guy who flicked the switch to blow up alderaan if he was a scholar does he get a boost die?

(Now I'm imagining if the death star missed)

I would say yes to the concept of sabotage. They would have a better understanding of how to circumvent security, use procedural rules to slow down bureaucracy, and even know where some of the skeletons are buried.

Since the entire planet was the target, not just the university, I would say no to the boost die for the death star.
