X-Wing Digital?

By President Jyrgunkarrd, in X-Wing

...Does FFG ever usually release digital versions of their games?

Even if the initial cost was the same as the starter set, and you bought digital expansions that were exactly equivalent in terms of cost and content, I would buy it - mostly because I just don't have people to play with anywhere nearby.

Vassal is okay, but I'm not good at the interface and I always feel like I'm wasting my opponent's time as I go slowly go through my turns and chat about my actions. An implementation of the game akin to the Small World digital game where it very quickly walks you through every phase and prompts you for different actions would be killer.

Sadly, the odds are _very_ much against this, as the licensing would butt right up against EA's evil dominion.

Having said that, X-Wing could be good, _fair_ free to play game.

I doubt I'd ever play a digital version, I just like the real table top version to much

I'm not positive, but I think FFG has even stated outright that their license does not include any option for a digitally playable game.

Yes, the question comes up in the Star Wars rpgs, and those developers have gone on record that they can't even do a digital version of the rpg book due to EA's license for all Star Wars digital gaming products, and that's not even a video game.

Your only option for a digital/online version of X-wing is vassal. There is a pretty big community of players there, so if you're having trouble getting a game in your area you should give it a try. A bunch of people from this forum are on there, including the X-wing Worlds champions.

This...I play to socialize with fellow players...when I want to play a digital version I just start up TIE Fighter.

Yeah, I've been using Vassal. Unfortunately, just 3 games in and I've already had an experience with one of Those Guys tonight.

Oh well.

By "Those Guys" do you mean a jerk or a tournament player? So far I've only good experiences with other players on vassal, but maybe I've been lucky. I have run into a few players who were way out of my league, but I can usually learn something by playing against better players, even if it's frustrating and I get totally destroyed.

Oh no, I don't at all mind people who run tryhard lists. They need to get their practice games in somewhere. :)

'Jerk' is too strong a word, but yeah. He decided to open the match by cheating (claimed to need to put together a squad because he didn't have a saved one handy. Okay, fine. So he immediately puts one together specifically tailored to table mine. :| ), and then at the end, having tabled me without losing a ship, he decided to spend maybe 5~ minutes talking about how to 'improve' my list with his Professional Suggestions (which would be fine, maybe, if I were interested in running the most optimized possible sub-par list? Sorry, but if I wanted to run something really competitive I'd just fly Fat Han, Double Aggressor or BZZZZ and be done with it) while I made repeated attempts to politely say goodbye and go back to the lobby.

Would be nice but as EA has the rights they'd release a bugged mess full of micro transactions.

I almost cried at what they did to dungeon keeper I'd hate to see the same done to x-wing.

List timing can be tricky. But you can just as easily run into someone who have multiple lists saved, and will pick the one best suited to beat yours, if you load first. The only real counter to this is to make a countdown and post a link to a saved list in a sqaudbilder at the same time. But that's probably overkill for most casual play.

Sometimes people just don't click, and giving unsolicited list building advice can easily come off as condescending, but my experience on Vassal has also been that the friendly players outnumber the jerks by a vast margin.

I can only remember a couple of games where I wouldn't like to face that player again, and only a single occasion where I thought the opponent was a jerk. in this case, he started pushing me to pick up the pace, to a point where I barely felt I had time to think about my options before declaring actions or adjusting dials. In the end, even that is just a matter of setting expectations ahead of time, and I have just avoided that player in future games.

Well, at least I now have another reason to hate Electronic Arts.

Because I really needed one more of those.

Oh yeah, I don't disagree with this at all. I played some more and everyone has been friendly. Even the guy whom I didn't like was friendly.

I don't think I'd have minded so much about the list tailoring except that I had specifically said I was new and still learning the ropes, both with Vassal and X Wing, and I was clearly running something non-competitive. Like, really, you're going to pick Palob after seeing Jake + P. Rocket? If he'd wanted to table me, he could've just run Han or something (or just, y'know, outflown me. I'm not exactly great at flying) - but nope, gotta create the most negative play experience possible and table that n00b and then give him the Words of Wisdom afterward.

I did learn quite a bit during the match regardless, so that was a positive take-away, but I didn't have much fun.

"Looks overlapping to me,"

...Yeah, so the Vassal community when it comes to pick-up games ain't so great. Same guy also wanted to 'roll for it' on a maneuver I was clean on, and whined about the dice when i shot down one of his guys in a game I was clearly losing (because, really, if you don't take the game 100-0, what was the point?).

Sigh.

I was there were physical players nearby, or at least a version of the game with hitbox detection so every 3rd game isn't another one of Those Guys.
