Might want to fix the typo in the word "designers" in your first line.

Edit: Left alone that sounds kind of bitchy even when I read it. I just know it's frustrating to have a typo after going through all that work, so I figured I'd send you a heads-up. Good Q&A though.

It's Joda he's allowed to make typos. Now if it was Boba that would be unacceptable.

Thanks! Please point out typos! I can't stand them either. I just got the answers back and pushed this out quicky.

Cool, thanks for posting.

I hope the tractor beam makes it into the game one day.

Bad news for the tractor beam crowd.

I think the fact they've tried to make a workable mechanic around one and haven't given up is quite the opposite.

Hope springs eternal, I suppose.

I found it interesting that he highlighted the recent 86-point squads on his "Unexpected" list. I think it's fair to assume that when a player is able to win despite giving up a full ship's worth in points, the devs will probably take steps to address it.

Also: was the "player behavior surprising you in a positive way" my question? If so: cool! If not: still cool!

It's really not that hard. Attack Wing has some iterations of a tractor beam that are fairly simple (I think I've heard the designers say they don't follow Attack Wing). Have the ship come with a blue and red tractor beam token.

Action: Assign yourself a blue token and an enemy within range 1-2 a red token. While the tractor beam is maintained, the target ship cannot select a maneuver higher than speed 2 on their dial. If during the end phase the two ships are no longer within Range 1-2 of each other, both tractor beam tokens are removed.

This is basically a less harsh version of the Borg Tractor Beam, which is range 1 only but drops enemy shields and prevents them from cloaking. It's also the prerequisite for a cutting beam attack, which is 10 dice at range 1... yay Attack Wing :D

Alternatively, it could do something like making all hard turns red. One way or another the intent is to limit the maneuver options of the enemy ship.

Anyway I've already gone down the rabbit hole, haven't I... I should just read the article and move on :)

Tie avenger with tractor beam... :)

He was actually confusing or mentioning 2 lists at once.

  • The 86 or 87 point dual TIE Phantom Squads (Buzzsaw Whisper + Echo)
  • The 80 point Whisper + SuperFel squad

These squads work because:

  1. Both ships are above the "reference level" (TIE Fighter) on the power curve.
  2. You have to completely kill the squad to get all 100 points.
  3. There is no partial point scoring and these ships are difficult to kill, so scoring points against this squad is difficult even though they only have 2 ships.

For squad #2 I would personally consider Dark Curse + Hull Upgrade to make the squad 99 points, but that's because I like to play the game "tactically" and dislike gaming the points system.

Probably your question. :)

Most of those were from that old thread I started a while back. I didn't get to ask those to him in person but they were questions I really liked. Luckily the guy who runs our FLGS is awesome. he's the one who suggested passing those unanswered questions on.
