Copilot Action - Clarification

By RebelDave, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

OK, so I just want to get an idea of people interpretation, to see if I get this right.

Copilot Action in space Combat.

"On a successful check, each success downgrades the difficulty of the pilot's next piloting check by 1"

This working, specifically (Pg 237 CRB), says to me.... that DOWNGRADING reduces any Red Dice to Purple... but does not Remove any Purple dice?

DOWNgrading, being the opposite of UPGRADING (Converting a Purple Dice to Red).

NOT: Reducing the Difficulty of the check itself.

Example:

Target takes Evasive Maneuvers, which UPGRADES the Dice pool of attacks AGAINST itself.

Player makes a Copilot Action.. so the PILOTS (Not gunners, unless a Snubfighters) next check removes that Red dice, and converts it BACK to a Purple?

IF I am correct, what do you do if the pool is all purple? reduce the pool by 1, but add a Red? or just remove a Purple?

The wordings of Increase/Decrease and Upgrade/Downgrade are confusing me.

Or am I drunk and missing something? (again)

If the dice pool doesn't have any dice upgraded to reds then downgrades do nothing. In such a situation, take a different action.

EotE Core Rulebook, Page 22:

DOWNGRADING MORE DICE THAN AVAILABLE
There may be situations where a player needs to downgrade Proficiency dice into Ability dice or Challenge dice into Difficulty dice. If all the potential dice are already in their downgraded form, any further downgrades are ignored.
So yeah, basically, unless the pilot has some red dice in his pool, the co-pilot action does nothing. Of course, he could still do a combat assist and add a boost.

Copiloting is handy for navigating through stellar phenomena.

I'm not sure this example is totally correct...attacks targeting a vehicle which is currently taking Evasive Maneuvers do have their difficulty upgraded, but co-piloting downgrades the difficulty of piloting checks, not attacks. But I hope I am answering your question with the following...

As a rule: when dealing with Upgrades & Downgrades in a single dice pool, any applicable Upgrades (both for Difficulty & Proficiency) happen first, then any applicable Downgrades happen. If that's what you were asking.

It might help to reread the chapter 1 rules on dice. They make a lot more sense once you've got a few game sessions under your belt, but are incredibly tough-going if you start there before playing the game :-p this I know from experience. Once I played a game or two, the chapter 1 rules were perfectly clear and understandable where before they were this murky mess.
