Meh, it's an issue I have with. There's no reason there can't be a competent officer in the Empire. Heck, there are other bigger fish in the universe that can be just as destructive, and even more so, than the rebels. I wouldn't mind seeing the rebels join forces with an officer like that, especially one that knows he/she can't win without it. Heck, I wouldn't mind if they had that officer defect to the rebels later on..

Man, it doesn't even need to be that. Given the level of corruption, incompetence, and cronyism, I wouldn't doubt it for a second that there aren't worlds where the defenses are less than satisfactory. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the local Governor/Moff uses the biggest ship and it's escorts as their personal taxi service and pleasure barge.

I would settle for a team up between the Imperials and Rebels against a pirate/slaver ship/squadron. That way the Empire could get a "victory" under its belt and we can have a Jedi being supported by storm troopers while taking out pirates/slavers.

Reminds me of a Roleplay I had several characters ( a mix of Indys, Rebels, and Imperials) in where the conflict between Xixor and Vader grew into a war of the 501st and Death Squadron versus Black Sun. There were several times where Vader loyal forces and the Alliance teamed up to take on Black Sun because the Vader loyalists viewed Black Sun as the greater of two evils.

Maybe we can see a little more of the new canon in Ultimate Star Wars.
